inev, tbh, I really can’t answer that question for you confidently. All I know is no one I know has gotten in trouble for it. but really, take that with a grain of salt.

Do you ever feel too stressed out or overwhelmed? If so, does Stanford offer resources to help with that?

I know college-level work is supposed to be challenging, but no one ever really says just how challenging it is (I know a lot of it depends on your major too though).

My biggest fear is the possibility that high school may not have prepared me enough and I find myself struggling to deal with the courseload.

How are dem ladies up in palo alto?

Pick any instrument you want to play and your section leader will teach you. It doesn’t matter at all if you’ve never played it before–in fact, having so much musical training will give you a leg up. Lots of people do this, and some even get good enough to be section leader themselves on their new instrument.

inev - there were some kids in our dorm that got in trouble for smoking in the dorm (because it was a public area). They were told that they would be suspended if they kept it up - but that it was ok if they smoked outside away from the building. Does that help?

Sly Si, what can you tell me about the Dollies? I know the Band is in charge of choosing them and I would LOVE to be one. What makes a great Dollie?

You’ll be fine. Pretty much everyone feels worried at first since you’re going to Stanford, but you’ll quickly realize that almost everyone is like you and that fear will evaporate before you can say “Stanford”. Just pick your classes judiciously, and dont overload the first quarter. Also, if you do find yourself falling behind for any reason, you should go to office hours and resident tutors. Very, very rarely do kids do poorly if they are putting in their best effort.

frog139 - Are you sure you are talking about people smoking weed? :S The policy seems super lax…

^ LOL… I agree…I think frog139 thought u meant just reagular cigars

LOL

Yeah, I think he’s talking about cigarettes.

nope that was weed

^ really…LOL…did the ppl who got the students in trouble know it was weed?

Can an undergraduate participate in some fashion in the Hoover Institute?

You must be joking! The weed policy is that lax? I knew Californians were progressive, but holy #$%#…

But did the authorities know it was weed?

Bescraze, definitely. One of the girls in my dorm works at Hoover.

PLEASE don’t go by my one example. I’m sorry I brought this up. However, 1) “authorities” were not involved, only our RF (faculty member who is in charge of the dorm) but 2) yes he did know

What are summer plans like? As in internships, stints etc…

My son is trying to decide between Rice (with a great merit scholarship, including a research scholarship) and Stanford. If what I am reading is true, the classes at Rice will be smaller, and more likely to be taught by profs. I am wondering how many of his Stanford classes would be taught by TAs and how hard it would be for him to find research opportunities.
He’s not sure of his major, but possibly environmental science.
I am also wondering about the quarter system. It sounds pretty fast paced.
Thoughts? Comments?

I’m considering buying a meal plan as a graduate student… Is it normal for people to eat alone in the dining halls? It doesn’t sound like many grad students eat at them.

Can you get the food to go?
