I’ve heard that happens to quite a few people, even people getting sophomore housing. You should be hearing soon, have no fear! I think it’s generally a week later or so that people hear who got a pending email!

Can anyone tell me anything about 153 Hemenway? Is it the same as Loftman Hall? The Northeastern website/campus map were of absolutely no help. All I know is that it is suite-style living, considering I have 5 other roommates.

can you tell me anything about stetson hall east?

I know absolutely nothing on 153 Hemenway. I didn’t know anyone who lived there. I’m sorry I cannot be of much help! However, I did find this thread from 2009, and I doubt it’s changed much since. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/northeastern-university/753719-153-hemenway-st.html
Hopefully that will help!

@runner10k Stetson East isn’t the coziest of dorms but it’s alright. It’s on the colder side of things with regards to how the room looks (no carpets, white walls). However it’s also in a really nice location as you’re right above the best (in my opinion) dining hall, and just down the road from the gym/grocery store. I had 2 friends who lived there last year, at first they didn’t like it because it’s not the coziest of dorms when you first arrive, but they warmed up to it after making it their own and in the end had no problems with it at all!

Hi I was wondering what you could tell me about rooms in IV north. I’ve toured a couple times but every time I’ve seen only singles and I was assigned to a double. How do the doubles compare to the singles? Do you have any idea what dimensions the room would be (i.e. for size rug i should get?)
thanks!

How is Fenway Hall? I got put in the Creative Expressions LLC, and I do like art, but I’m a Pharmacy major and I’m not sure how convenient this’ll be for me…

@everlastingwish I’m thinking the exact same thing! I’m in 153 Hemenway within the Creative Expressions LLC and I love music, but I’m a business major and kind of wanted to be in the CBA LLC. You think it’s too late to switch?

How is Kennedy Hall?

Do NOT buy a rug yet. Every single year people ask for room dimensions and what size rug they should get. Seriously, don’t do it until you move in. In some dorms, the average room size will be completely different than yours. Sometimes the shape of your room makes it impossible to put your furniture in any way but one. Sometimes the furniture is literally glued to the ground, so your room could be big enough but that doesn’t mean you’ll get any floor space. And finally, if you buy a floor rug that your roommate doesn’t like or in a color they get annoyed by or in a texture that catches on their wheely chair… You’re going to be a very bad roommate. Move in, talk to your roommate in person, and THEN go buy one if you can.

What freshman classes would you recommend? I am currently a physics major (thinking about changing to a dual physics/chem. engineering) so I really can’t decide on which classes to choose when it comes to the arts/humanities, social sciences, and those other cores. By a recommendation I mean like which classes do people find the most interesting or end up being glad at the end of the year that they took the class. When it comes to these subjects my interest varies greatly so any suggestions would be helpful. I know I can already get credit for US history, and will most likely get credit for Calculus, Physics, English, and maybe Econ and Spanish, just to give you a heads up as to what I’m working with right now.
Also, what is the difference between a dual major versus a normal one when it comes to work load/stress and that sort of stuff and whether it’s worth it or not? I’m doing the honors program and everything so I just don’t want to overload myself; I already got to do that in a nice Catholic high school. How is the physics department? And is the physics/chem. eng. a good match, or are there other combinations/majors that might mesh better? Sorry this turned out to be a lot longer than I expected haha :)

@Zack: I would really recommend the First Year Inquiries in Social Sciences (Voices in Development: How One Person Changed the World for the Poorest of the Poor) if you’re at all interested in that type of thing. It’s an honors course taught by Prof. Shaughnessy. I am an International Affairs major now minoring in Social Entrepreneurship. I know you’re a physics major, but it seems you might be interested in this type of thing! I just got back from the DR with Prof. Shaughnessy and it was a life-changing trip (I also took his Social Entrepreneurship course this past spring. This honors class counts as the equivialent of the SE course I believe).

Additionally, Globalization (the intro International Affairs course) is usually loved by all, taught by a beloved professor, Denise Horn. Also potentially life-changing. Interestingly, Prof. Shaughnessy guest lectured in my Globalization class, which is how I first learned about social entrepreneurship.

And regarding major combinations, that would be a great question for you to ask at orientation when you get to sit down with your advisor.

I was at 153 Hemenway these past two semesters, I can answer any questions you have about it. Those old topics are woefully out of date.

Basically, 153 Hemenway is a transfer and international kids dorm (for the most part). If you aren’t international, they probably threw you into it to fulfill the American part of their multicultural rainbow. Seriously.

Its an epic dorm, though! Its the only freshmen dorm with your own private bathroom, and depending on your luck, a living room. Its carpeted and the rooms (again, depending on your luck) are pretty big for freshman rooms. However, it isn’t air conditioned, there isn’t an elevator and there can be a mice problem if you don’t take care of your room.

Its immediately across the street from Stetson East and around the corner from Stetson West, which will be your main food places. 153 Hemenway itself is actually a small part of Loftman Hall, which is why its not listed on the map. The rooms are mostly suites with two or three doubles and singles, usually a mix between the two. There are two rooms on each floor that face the front of the building, and those are quads. They aren’t great, to be honest, its just one big room and a bathroom.

If there’s anything else I can help answer, let me know. I also know some stuff on 420 related things, and the Computer Science major.

I hope it’s alright I posted this all here. I didn’t think it necessary to make a new topic.

Can anyone tell me stuff about Stetson West? Is it air conditioned? How long is the dining hall open? How are the community bathrooms? What are some dorm necessities to bring? Should I bring a tv?

And for orientation, I know we room in speare hall. Do they randomly decide who we room with for the night?

Lastly, what are the best electives to take?

Thank you!

@plainConnor Thank you so much for the info on 153 Hemenway! I’ve been hearing only small rumors about the place, and I haven’t found anything helpful until your post. One thing I heard is that the suites have kitchens? I highly doubted that, but I wouldn’t complain if there was one. I think my rooming assignment is 417, I have 5 other suite-mates, and we’re arranged in three rooms - and I know that 4 of my suite-mates are American (can’t find/stalk the 5th on facebook). Is this normal, meaning, to arrange American students with American students within the suite, but to place them in the international hall? Or do you think the dorm is no longer the housing for international students?

Again, thank you SO much for your post! It was incredibly helpful!

hey , thanks so much for doing this. When you applied to NEU, what was your gpa, and what did you get on your SATs (if you took the subject tests, please tell me that too)? Does NEU require you to take subject tests? Lastly, what were your ec’s? Thanks, and sorry for so many questions, NEU is my dream college

@svcarney: No. There are no kitchens in any freshmen dorm… at all. Not at least to my knowledge. And there were a number of a rooms that were all Americans, they were pretty common. However, I don’t know if they are switching the location of the Multicultural LLC.
People might tell you that you have a kitchen, but that’s Loftman Hall- its an upperclass dorm. 153 Hemenway does not have kitcens.

@JustinV - thanks for the answer! I checked out that thread!

I’m wondering one more thing: I’m doing engineering and I can choose the 4 year option or the 5 year option, but I really don’t know which one to pick, do you have any opinion on this? The 5 year option has 3 co-ops, is one more co-op really worth it?

Thanks :)

@zaphira: All my roommates are engineers. They’re all doing the 5-year/3 co-op option. I definitely think a third co-op is worth it, and for engineers, you’ll be making a lot of money during that co-op. One of my engineering roommates last year is thinking about doing the combined bachelors/masters option I think.

All of my engineering friends are doing 5 years, even if they have room to do 4. But I wouldn’t go in with any “I’m going to do this option” ideas. Just do a co-op, see how things are working out, see if you want to study something else… You may even find you don’t like engineering. Try not to put so much pressure on what you are going to be doing in 5 years.

thanks blinkangel44 and neuchimie! I’m actually just trying to get some information about everything… My plan is to really explore during freshman year (as I’ll only have to declare an engineering major by the end) and find out about all of the different options and so.
