Hi, I will soon be a sophomore at Northeastern University. I am happy to answer anyone's questions regarding housing, classes, the Honors Program, dialogues, and extracurriculars. I can also help with questions about the social life and things to do in Boston. Ask away!

I was wondering how often do you go out into the city, like around the Faneuil Hall area?

Are most of the honors dorms singles or doubles? Is it loud at night from “city noises” ie. sirens, traffic, etc? Thanks for offering to help answer questions!

hi I was wondering what the upcoming Welcome Week will be like? I’m supposed to meet with some staff members to talk about being hired for work/study. Will my welcome week activities create a conflict with this? Is it going to be difficult to figure out what I’m supposed to be doing?

@Eshale: One of the reasons I love Northeastern is because it is so connected with the great city of Boston. People say that since it is a city school, that there is no campus. This is completely false as there is a lot of green space and areas to hang out. But beyond there being a great campus, you can walk right off campus and into a great part of the city. My friends and I spend a lot of time around Faneuil Hall - there is always something going on. We also spend a lot of time in the North End (Little Italy). These are places that you can go to many times and it never gets boring. Getting around the city is also very easy since both the green line and the orange line run right through the campus, therefore connecting you to all parts of Boston.

@Bethorama: International Village is right next to a police station and while there is a lot of traffic and sirens going off frequently, it never seems to be that loud. I have lived in the middle of the woods all my life so at first I was also worried about the noise. But after a few days, I did not even notice the sirens/traffic anymore. Most of the honors freshman dorms are double (especially if you live in IV North). The west wing has a lot more singles, but I would say to expect to have a double.

@student: It will not be hard to figure out what you’re supposed to be doing. When I moved in last year, there was a very detailed schedule of events for Welcome Week so I never felt confused as to what I was supposed to be doing. Welcome Week was very helpful since it allowed ample time to meet new people and get comfortable with the layout of the campus. Do not worry about work/study conflicts during the week, since it will all be a part of your schedule. Welcome Week is very exciting and is run in a way to create the least amount of stress for incoming students. Enjoy!

Hey! Do you know how difficult it is to get into the honors program?

Hey jw how is the partying scene ? Do people go to other schools often to party?and are the apartment parties for freshman too?

im curious about the laundry service offered- do many people use it? and is it well liked?

The laundry service is great, well worth the money. It is very easy to use and the 24 hour turn around time is nice. My daughter will be using the service again this year. They take good care of your clothes and never lost anything.

Hi Kraken93,I am moving in to white hall on friday and I was wondering if it was ok for me to just mail my 32" tv to my mailbox? I got my address and I was told I could mail some stuff to it. Another question is whether there is enough room for the microfridge and Tv and also if the internet in the dorm is fast and reliable, I plan on bringing my router for Wifi. Thanks for the help.

I’m also a student at Northeastern so I’ll try to answer some of these:
I’d definitely give garment valet a good review. I wouldn’t say that many people use it, since its a luxury you don’t need to buy, but if you are willing to pay for it its a great service. I’ve never had a problem with them and if you buy the plan before next week its only $375 for the year.

I’ll let someone else take the party question.

You shouldn’t have any problem mailing a TV, I’ve sent stuff bigger than that to the mail room. You’ll have to pick it up from the mail room, I’d just make sure you bring someone with you to help carry it back to your room.
Other than one unfortunate week last year, the internet in IV was always great. I can’t comment on White Hall since I’ve never been in it.

RE: Laundry services. Garment Valet has mixed reviews on Yelp, but most importantly I am under the impression that laundry is included in the residence fee (laundry bucks), so that is $375 that you might not have to spend otherwise.

To confirm above - laundry is included up to a certain amount. I’ve never run out of laundry bucks over a semester, and the very few friends who did always found people to give them some. I’d much rather just suck it up and do my own laundry than fork over 375 dollars.

But I also have done my laundry my whole life and paid for all of my living expenses. If you don’t know when to do cold or hot and your parents will pay for it… Sure, why not. Although don’t be surprised when you’re 24 and have no idea where to put the soap.

@collegecrazey: The party scene is different in some ways than you would get at other colleges. Frat parties do not seem to be very big as they are in other schools, and that is probably true in most cities. However, that doesn’t mean that there are not parties. Many upperclassmen live in apartments near campus or rent houses (especially in Mission Hill). If you meet upperclassmen through school organizations you can expect to hear about many parties on the weekend. There are also many people who go to different schools for parties, like at MIT and BU. If you want to find a party, you will, but it may just take a little more work to find them at the beginning of the year.

Hi, thanks for offering to answer questions. I’m visiting campus/Boston next week for three days. One day to sit in on some CompSci classes I hope, and another two days to do the campus tour/INV tour (I’d be Honors (Natl Merit)) and to be a tourist. If you have ideas of interesting nerdy tourist destinations, esp. something I might not see listed in tripadvisor-dot-com, I’d like to hear about them. (I know the MIT Museum isn’t exactly out of the ordinary, but, ideas like that would be great.) I’m also vegetarian so veg-friendly food ideas would be good too.

Olmost, I would recommend a visit to the Maparium at the Mary Baker Eddy library. It is interesting, unique, and quite close to Northeastern. Of course, the Freedom Trail and all the historical sites along it are absolutely worth exploring. If you like art museums, check out the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum.

I googled Mapparium and the art museum and they both look interesting - they’re on my list! (Yes, Freedom Trail and other historical sites too.) Thanks!
