Current NYU Stern Junior, open to answering any questions

Hey everyone, I'm a current NYU Stern Junior, majoring in Finance and Economics, looking to go into the field of Investment Banking upon graduation. I applied to Stern via EDII (after being deferred by Wharton). If you have any questions about admissions, culture/life, education level, etc. feel free to ask! I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

How much money did you get? What were your scores, GPA, ECs?

My nyu albert under application status it changed from cas to gls. What does this mean? I originally applied to study International Relations at CAS but it changed into GLS.

Do I have a good shot of getting in at a 3.65/4 UW GPA (hardest courseload at a college-prep private HS), 8 APs, and a 1540/1600 SAT? An admissions officer told me the average UW GPA of a Sternie was a 3.8+

How challenging is freshman year? Do people intern during the school year?

thatasiankid: I didn’t qualify for financial aid, but overall NYU is terrible with financial aid. I do know they have some scholarship programs that you should look into.

bloo21: Does CAS even offer an international relations major? Maybe it doesnt so they transferred you to GLS which does. Im not too entirely sure though.

jarjarbinks23: Yeah your GPA is a bit on the low end, but your SAT and AP’s are definitely strong. I think you have a decent shot, try to emphasize your rigorous course work so they know a 3.65/4.00 UW is pretty good.

NYUFan101: Freshman year is challenging in the sense that its your first time taking college courses. Also most people end up taking the required courses (history, writing classes, etc) their freshman year so it will be challenging if you’re not strong in those aspects. Most people do not intern during their freshman year. Most find something for their summers though. I know of people that work during the school year and I know of people that do not. I personally worked my sophomore fall semester and my junior fall semester. ITs a good experience if its a good internship. You want to try to maximize your resume before Junior Summer internships come around. But yeah, definitely not mandatory to intern during the school year, but it will help in the long-run.

Also my stats: Took 13 AP exams (mostly 5’s)
SATII: Math II (790), Biology (760), US History (760), those are the only ones I remember
SATI: Math 790 / 740 Writing / 680 Reading, not the strongest so I actually opted not to submit my SAT I
UW GPA: 3.93/4.00, Weighted: 5.71/6.00

Had very strong EC’s which included:

4 year varsity tennis and badminton (multiple championships in both)
4 years All-state orchestra plus many other accolades in this field
Had some other miscellaneous awards and stuff

@afellowasian1994 holy **&! at those stats… by the way, did you ever take the AMC 10 or 12?

Also are the internees paid?

AMC 10? not sure what that is so probably not haha

It depends, its pretty difficult to find a paid internship your freshman/sophomore years. Honestly, i wouldn’t only consider the internships that are paid, unless you really need the money. Its all about what makes your resume look the strongest when junior internships come around. I personally have done multiple unpaid internships and currently doing a paid internship. The unpaid ones have definitely strengthened my resume so id say it was worth it.

Hey I am looking to be a Sternie next fall. Does Stern have specific clubs which offer internships for its members and if so, which ones?

There are no clubs that guarantee internships, but a lot of them have an alumni network that can significantly increase your chances of getting an internship. Some examples are: Quantitative Finance Society, Investment Analysis Group, Beta Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Pi, Alpha Kappa Psi

@afellowasian1994 by the way, is it common to see Sternies who got an internship at a major firm (like Blackstone or Gman Sachs) BEFORE they entered college, say during their senior year?

@jarjarbinks23 that is probably unlike but i guess still possible if the person in question is exceptionally talented and has the neccessary connections. I managed to secure an internship in Cargill DD this coming june…hopefully I would be able to get into stern?

@Jarjarbinks23‌ Very unlikely, and if they did, they probably got it from connections. but very unlikely.

Could you chance me?

I have about a 3.7 UW GPA
28 ACT
1670 SAT

Lots of EC
Three Years of cheerleading
Four years of student gov
12th yr-Student Body President
VP of Environmental Awareness Club
President of Fashion Club

I really want to go into Fashion Marketing and I feel NYU would be the best for me. Also would transferring into the school from a CC take away from the overall college experience?

Last year, did the decisions made by the NYU admissions office correspond to the FA change?

@JadeIsabelle‌ GPA looks fine, but your test scores are on the low end. Try to get ur SAT to at least 2200 if you want to be a strong candidate for nyu stern. You’d have the best chance if you somehow show your passion for fashion marketing through your application. best of luck!

@bobcat97‌ What do you mean by the FA change?

Like the famous change in the financial status on albert student log in. They change it from award access unavailable to 2016 self service unavailable. People have said that if it changes that means that you are accepted

Hi I will be a new Sternie in September 2016. Nice to meet you. I got ED1 accepted with no FA
Even though my parents are insisting to go for it (they say no worry for money), I feel a little bit overwhelmed
for my parents.

I am thinking of attending indiana Kelley because I got pretty decent merit scholarship .

My dad is the vocal one (he is from NYC even though he went U of Mich Ann Arbor) to ask me
location, location and location.

Any advice you would like to give me? Thank you
