How hard is it to get into NYU really?

I applied for Fall 2010 and got denied which doesnt really suprise me because I was only giving one semester of college for them to look at and even though I did well my HS grades were pretty bad. I am planning to continue my education at a community college and after another year there I am going to apply again. At this point I will have two years of college and even though my HS grades were bad and my SATs were just average I am hoping that because that was a long time ago and my college grades are much better they will be able to overlook that. By the time I apply for NYU again I would have been out of HS for atleast 3 maybe 4 years. I took one year off this year to do AmeriCorps which hopefully looks good too. Im just afraid that unless my GPA isnt like a perfect 4.0 and I dont have a shiit ton of extra-curricular and leadership activities and things like volunteering to feed the hungry in Ethiopia, and all these AP classes in HS like some of these kids do I wont be able to get in. When I apply for NYU again it will be my second time applying and know they are really selective...I can see myself applying again and again. Do you really need a perfect record or is that only how it seems? Do you or do you know anyone who had like a 3.6 or 3.7 GPA and still got in? I did a lot of extra curriculars in HS but not so much in college and I did not partake in a lot of leadership roles. What im doing right now--Americorps I think is the most impressive extra curricular I can put down. I can get pretty good grades but besides a good GPA and AmeriCorps I think my college record may look kinda boring. Although I do like to join clubs in school I never participate in leadership type things like student council and what not.

Also even though I got good grades in college my HS grades were a mess. I dont even know what my HS GPA was. Thats how much I cared about school. However, since HS as I have explained I have been doing much better in school and made the dean's list both semesters last time I was in college.

I know they will look at my HS transcript and I know my college transcripts will obviously count more but even though HS was so long ago do you think they will actually take it into consideration? And how do you think I fair at getting into NYU after another year of community college with like a 3.6 or 3.7 with a decent amount of extra curriculars and a year of AmeriCorps under my belt? My biggest fear is that even after applying again and doing another year of schooling I still wont get in. I really want to though its my dream school and my parents worked there when I was growing up in Brooklyn. I know a lot about the city (lived there my whole life) and the NYU culture, and what goes in behind the scenes but not much about the school academic wise besides the professors are top notch....

Is NYU one of those schools where they seem to impeccable standards and like you have to be perfect to get in but then you have a whole bunch of students that in reality are just average students and your like how did these kids even get here?
