Current Penn Freshman Accepting Questions

Hey guys what's up?

I remember being in your shoes not too long ago...anyways, I've got some time to kill, and I remember when frequenting this site in the past that I always enjoyed the posts by current college students talking to prospective students. So that's what this post is!

Fire away with any sort of question about the University of Pennsylvania...admissions, academics, athletics, girls, social, whatever you want haha...this is off the record :P

two questions:

Is there an arrogant attitude of Whatonites towards other fellow Penn students?

Second, how hot are the girls

is penn sick? hows the housing/food/ campus?

Repeat of phillyboy's second question...

How hard are the academics?

not to steal the '11er's thunder, but as an '09er i have experience to offer as well.

the range of ladies varies, but i'd say there are quite a few gems here...

whartonites generally don't have an arrogant attitude, especially since there are so many non-whartonites taking wharton classes (i'll have taken 6 by the end of next semester, and i'm an engineer)

housing ranges, depending on where you are; highrises are most luxurious but quad or hill offer the best social experiences (quad's overall a prettier and nicer place though)

dining halls suck, but there's plenty of food trucks and restaurants around to make up for that...

campus overall is quite pretty; some odd places / buildings (drl and the biopond), but i love and am going to miss quad and locust walk...

academic difficulty depends on the program and the class, obviously; it's not a breeze but if your undergraduate education does its job, you'll be far better equipped to handle challenges as you progress, and therefore overall difficulty should decline somewhat as you go.

OK, first of all, I forgot to mention: I'm in CAS (or we just call it the college). So this is where my bias comes from.

Now to answer your questions:
The best way to describe a Whartonite is DRIVEN. There is a certain mystique associated with Wharton, and the best way to describe it is a mixture of awe and disdain (at least for people outside of Wharton). For example, two jokes from the DP (Daily Pennsylvanian) this year were that if Penn were Hogwarts and each school were one of the houses, the college would be gryffindor, engineering would be ravenclaw, nursing would be hufflepuff, and Wharton would be Slytherin. Also, the T-shirts for Wharton say in big letters WHARTON with University of Pennsylvania below it...whereas all the other schools say PENN and then the subschool below that. Just a funny quirk...

Don't get me wrong though...I have many Whartonite friends. Many of whom can switch on and off the businessman/woman in them.

So to answer your question succinctly, yes, there is an attitude of arrogance, but I would say it is far more subtle than often portrayed. There is no "Great Schism" between Wharton and the rest of the University.

Girls! haha. Lets just say when I first applied, I was very apprehensive about this. Suffice to say, on a whole, Penn's female population is wholely average. The hot girls are like diamonds in the rough...that's the best way to describe it. However, don't dispair...they don't call Penn the social ivy for nothing...the social life of this school was probably one of the biggest surprises for me...it's AWESOME! Girls from neighboring schools (Temple, La Salle, St. John's, Drexel, Villanova...) come to party almost every weekend, largely because our alcohol policy is so lax, and there is (usually) no cover charge at any parties. So my friend, don't worry...you might be off-put by the women at first glance, but the hot ones are there if you search for them, and like I said don't forget about all the girls from other schools too!

I love Penn! I am 100% happy I decided to come here (applied RD). Housing is amazing...if you get it. That's the only problem. It's not guaranteed, and that can cause some problems. Also, i ended up in a highrise. The rooms are 2nd to none (bathroom, kitchen, lounge), but they aren't as social as say the Quad. Go for the Quad if you can.

The food overall is good, meaning the food options. The dining halls are mediocre...you need to find which of the three (hill, 1920 commons, kings court) serve the best meals of the day. There also is Houston Hall where you can use dining dollars to get sushi, gourmet burgers, and other yummi stuff. Food carts are very tasty and cheap, and also Philly has plenty of good local restaurants.

I like the campus a lot. Some people bash it, but I think it melds "college" with "city" very well. Locust Walk is always alive and filled with energy, and its fun to just walk down it every day haha.

Academically, I'm not gonna lie...it's hard. For me, if I maintained high school level work, I would pull straight Cs. You really do have to step up your game for college. It's a little hard to get used to at first, but you gradually get into the swing of things. Also, when I say "hard," I should qualify it. You basically go into stuff in far more detail, and things pile up, eg this is due tomorrow, paper due friday, test wed, blah, blah...the most important skill you can get good at is time management. Practice this skill, and you will be a highly successful college student wherever you end up.

whew! there's so much more! I tried to fire off answers fairly quickly here, but I can go more in depth through PM or more replies. More ?s

ah - as far as that wharton attitude i have to add that the majority of wharton computers are wharton-only (you have to have taken a wharton class to get access), and that sort of elitism can be annoying.

wharton only? that is not fair. gosh, i mean wharton belongs to the University of Pennsylvania. Where's the cohesion? It is almost like a different university. I think the University should do something about that.

thank u guys for answering my questions. omg omg omg friday!!!!!! SEE U GUYS AY PENN IF I DO COME TO PHILLY

pat, i assume you're a guy, so this might not be a question you'd be able to answer, but...

how hot are the guys?

Haha, you assume correctly...I would have to say on a whole that the guys are better-looking than the girls (source: a casual stroll down locust walk). But it all depends on the places you frequent. I mean if you spend a lot of time in DRL, the hotness index of guys and girls drops considerably. On the other hand, visit A Chi O or TriDelt or perhaps a Psyc or Sociology class and it shoots right up :P

You might enjoy this article too: The Daily Pennsylvanian

I'd wager that the guys are "hotter" because they've got (or are soon going to have) the traits that Penn women adore - money, power, and status. Penn women aren't as "hot" because physical attractiveness is what most guys are after, and this isn't the place for that.

Don't live in the high rises as a freshman. Live in the Quad (or Hill or KC, in that order).

The whole Wharton/rest of Penn thing is kind of sad. Yes, most Wharton students were more qualified when they came in than most Penn students. I'd have to say the biggest problem is that college students feel some kind of inferiority complex rather than Wharton students acting arrogant.

Haha, coming from a whartonite^^. I disagree somewhat on the last point, at least about the "inferiority complex." I think it has more to do with the fact that people immediately think of Wharton when they think of Penn. It's the "mystique" I truly believe...anyways, I agree with the first part of your post. (hotness, quad=better)

One of my friends friends who was rejected from penn was actually told by an adcom that if he had applied to Wharton instead of CAS he would have gotten in...idk what the statistics will be this year though.

What were your SATs, GPAs, and extracurriculars?

SAT: 2320 (770M,750CR,800W)
SAT2: Math800, Physics760, WorldHistory800
GPA: 4.33W, 4.0UW

Extracurriculars: Soccer, Football, Student Council, Math Club/Team, Tutoring, Key Club, the usual fare...I think I got accepted most of all because I was well-rounded. I didn't really have one ridiculous achievement that set me apart or anything. That's one fact that my interviewer kept noting, that is, that he liked my well-roundedness.

thanks for the article!

entertaining and informative :)

Great, patpatt2x4. That's exactly what I went for, and you don't seem too different from me.

Haha, cool. Perhaps I'll see you and limilus next year :p. If you get in, make sure you come for Penn Previews. It's a sick time!

girls are hot
I don't know about the whartonites, but you shouldn't care much.
Campus food and housing are all good!

Meh, alright I've been at this damn computer for too long writing a final paper...I'll be back later, but it's off to dinner for now (btw king's court is the best dining hall for dinner IMO)

Peace all, and good luck tomorrow.
