Depends on where you live. Where I live many upperclassmen stay again because they love it so much.

That depends on the person, but I’d be surprised if anyone didn’t.

Do you any of you guys know about the Parliamentary Debate Team at Penn, is it really hard to get on the team, what is the atmosphere, etc. If I get accepted, that is something I hope I can do.

i also have a similar question about the Penn Model Congress

As an avid gamer with little ability to make new friends (I’m great with friends I have though), will it be extremely difficult for me to find new friends?

I’m an Asian-American (Korean) and I’m not too outgoing… :(

Does anyone know anything about the PennPals program? I’m extremely interesting in joining if admitted.

How are the Wharton kids? Are they all super-comptetive/cutthroat?

“The connection is alright. You can access it from all over campus, but the stregnth of your connection varies. I get as little as 2-3 bars in my room sometimes, and a friend of mine with a mac cant get signal at his computer desk…”
Thanks for the feedback.

I did the SAAST program over the summer and, while I know that’s not exactly a year at Penn, I can tell you that the people are awesome. I play sports, will join a frat, and am an avid gamer as well. All of us are nerds, in some form or another. I think that anyone would have a hard time not making friends.

@thefreakedout,

If we both get in lets make a SC2 team :). Unless you play DotA, i can do that too LOL

Like I said, no.

Too bad there already is one.
You’ll find super-competitive/cutthroat people in all 4 schools.

How harsh are the winters? I’m from San Francisco, so I am used to extremely temperate weather. Would it be hard for me to acclimate to Philly weather?

^ Lots of Californians, Floridians, Texans, etc. do it every year. You’ll have no problem acclimating! :)

how are the dorms for freshmen?

What’s the school spirit like? Do people actually go to, say, the football games and cheer on the team?
I know this is highly subjective, but how hard is engineering (more specifically Bioengineering)? Basically, would I have free time to do other stuff such as, for example, volunteering at a hospital?
Is it difficult to join an A Capella group? I love singing :)

If you had an interview what was it like? What kind of questions? Any tips?

dorms vary based on where you get in. the quad is overall pretty nice, i’m happy with the size of my room. hill is pretty crappy all around but not totally awful. king’s court has pretty nice rooms and (in my opinion) the best dining hall. high rises are nice but it’s pretty stupid to try to live there your freshman year because most freshmen live in the quad, hill or king’s court.

team spirit is alright. everyone wears our school colors and stuff but football turnout rate is usually pretty lame.

engineering it varies. one of my neighbors is an engineer and literally never does homework because a lot of it is optional depending on the prof. engineering of course is hard but it’s possible to have a life. a lot of people on crew, band, dance, etc. are engineers you just have to make time and maybe play less video games or facebook.

there are **** loads of a capella groups on campus, you’ll find one.

never had an interview sorry.

Sorry its been a few days guys. My laptop screen broke and I finally have a computer to use – desktop bound ):
Other students: Thanks for helping while I was gone :D

Although this wasnt directed to me, I’ll answer anyway
I live in hill, which is considered the WORST, and I still make do. Yes, my room is MUCH smaller than my boyfriends in the quad, but I reorganized it so it works pretty well. Also, there is more of a community here.

The Quad is BEAUTIFUL and the views from the rooms are breathtaking. You can get some ****ty rooms in there too, but some of the rooms are HUGE! Like, my friend has a triple and each room inside of it is the size of my dorm, and she has a huge living room. That being said, your room could be infested. I have a friend who has to change her rat trap daily, and another who woke up with a Squirrel in her room.

Another friend of mine is in Freshex in the high rises and she loves it. She likes the privacy she gets with her own room, and says the program helps them become close. My friends in Harnwell say the freshmen have like an end of the hallway and upperclassmen have the other end. I’ve heard a community is more difficult here because theres no program bringing everyone together.

I’ve heard Kings Court is very quiet, at least the halls my friends in there live on. The rooms are big, but like Hill, theres no AC.

Stouffer/Stouffer-Mayer is a pretty well kept secret. I think Stouffer may be one of the best dorms on campus. The rooms are spacious AND you have a mini kitchen. Basically the luxury of a high rise without much elevator drama. The only downside is that not many people know about it

I have a friend who made the parli debate team. If you really want to know, message me as a reminder and I’ll ask him how he likes it :)

The only way you wouldnt make a friend is if you dont allow yourself too. Even the people in my hall who close themselves in and study all of the time have friends in there studying with them. During NSO, theres countless people who you’ll tell your name to that you wont remember a second later, and if you dont make friends during that its okay. Try the week after. Or the week after. Its never to late.
p.s. Theres LOTS of gamers here. My floor has systems in the lounge and they play all night :)

I’ve heard of it, but I’m not too sure the fundamentals. Theres an activities fair on locust within the first few days and I’m pretty sure they have a table. You can find out then :)

My wharton floormates say that its not all of the kids who are competitive, but the classes that make them. Apparently some of the classes curve down, and some grades are based on the grades of your peers. They aren’t competitive nor cutthroat though. I know lots of nice wharton kids :)

It Gets Cold. I’m from Jersey, so I was used to it, but a lot of people from California/Bahamas/Texas/Georgia are going crazy, but they’ve gotten used to it. Be sure to get some warm sweaters, a fall jacket (warm enough for the breeze and chills) and a winter jacket (very very warm!). Also get some shoes with good treads for ice, typical winter gear (hats glove scarfs) and you should be good.

See above :)

I’m not the biggest school spirit person, haha. I went to a game and dressed up and threw toast and what not, but that was only once.
A lot of my engineering friends say their schedules are difficult. I actually know a Bioengineering major. He says the work is tough, but doable. He has enough free time to party at least two days a weekend though. If you want me to find out more from him message me as a reminder and I’ll ask :)

I’m in an A Capella I’m in The Inspiration and I LOVE it! You should try out ;D
Some A Capellas are pretty intense, while some are more fun oriented. Some are cultural (ex. Penn Masala, PennYo, The Inspiration) while some are more poppy and sing current songs (ex. Off the beat, Penny Loafers). There are also some for specific sexes (Quakernotes for girls).
Hundreds of people audition for some groups (I think off the beat had somewhere in the 100s), but they accept like 3. It depends on if you have what they’re looking for, specifically voice part, to replace what was lost.
But, its not only based upon how well you sing, but how well you can blend into the group. At callbacks, there was a girl who could belt her life away, but didnt get in because she was very snobby about it.

BUT, have hope and audition anyway

My interview was very laid back. I actually met the interviewer previously when I had to get xrays (he worked at Booth Radiology). He mostly asked about my resume and what activities I dedicated most of my time to, which class I liked the most, why penn, why they should pick me over others, etc. And then we had some good conversation about healthcare.
Tips: Dont freak out. I’m sure they can tell if you’re nervous or stiff. Also, don’t fake your personality. Be who you are and let them see it. They’ll like that much more. :)

For those interested in a cappella groups at Penn:

Don’t mean to keep jumping in on rainbowdazzle’s thread (you’re doing a terrific job, by the way :)), but here’s a link to the web site of Penn’s A Cappella Council, which includes links to the sites of the 12 (yes, TWELVE) a cappella groups that are members of the council:

[Penn A Cappella Council](http://www.dolphin.upenn.edu/pac/ack.html)

Not necessarily true. Huntsman floor and EH5 could give the people at Quad serious competition for being loud. To answer another question about KCECH, KCECH also has some of the largest rooms on campus, and IMO the best dining hall on campus (yes, people from high rises and Hill come here all the time).

Hard. You won’t have time to do anything ever in your life again after you come to Penn. (I am an engineer, btw)

Let’s just say that after the Performing Arts Night I got sick and tired of seeing A Capella groups.

The only thing I really used CC for was these threads, I think I may have posted a brief chancing thread but mostly it was for information about the school, so I think its fair to give back. I’m a Wharton freshman (and in Parli Debate since it pertains to one of the questions) so I think I can offer a different perspective - not trying to crash your thread Rainbowdazzle.

Yes, I do. I think 120+ tried out this year and about 26 of us got accepted (I think?)

Being honest, we’re not top team on the circuit, but we do pretty, have a great program, go to a lot of tournaments, and have a ton of fun. Your success on parli will be related to how seriously you want to take it, but its unlikely that you won’t enjoy the experience.

They exist. They’re not super-prevalent. You will run into some *******s and people with questionable morals. Being completely honest here. That said, I’ve found that Wharton also has a lot of good people, my management team is full of amazing people and none of them typify the evil Wharton student.

It gets cold. Really cold. You will acclimate though.

I know the standard response is quad is awesome, hill sucks, harnwell and stouffer-mayer are isolated. Quad is awesome, be prepared to share communal bathrooms. Hill lacks AC which SUCKS for the first few months BUT Hill is substantially more social than any other college dorm. You’ll form more and closer relationships with the people that live around you (not that this won’t happen in other dorms, just more in Hill.) Harnwell and Stouffer-Mayer do isolate you but you get great rooms and you just have to be a little more outgoing. Same thing with Kings Court English House and WEB Dubois.

School spirit is good, but no we don’t go to football games that much.

You will have the free time, all Penn students have the ability to make free time. That said, it is also a large workload and you’ll probably complain about your workload if you take on the other things, but when you love most of what you do, its a lot more bearable.

The A Capella groups are good, but there are a ton of them. So probably not.
