Current Penn Senior answering ANY questions!

Thank you for all the great advice. For the people accepted into penn, what were your SAT/ ACT scores?

My SAT scores were a 2190. 750 R 750 M 690 W.

And then I retook it and every single score dropped <<; I was sick that day…but I think my overall score was like a 2050 then. Blegh.

Mine was a 2310 (750 W, 760 M, 800 CR)
On the opposite end of the scale: the 670 I got on Chem II.

I got into CAS.

Then how do you not get ripped off?

Black Friday

Question: how do you guys print your documents? (I assume handing in homework is still mainly done in paper instead of electronically.) I don’t want to pay printing costs every time, so is it normal practice for roommates to share the cost of buying a printer?

Thanks in advance.

A) Dose applying ED and with legacy help my chances in a notable way
B) whats a good SAT score for CAS?
C) Is it easy to transfer to other higher Ivies from Penn

(i’m sorry if you have already answer any of these questions buy i didn’t read the whole thread)

thanks for any help in advance

34 composite on the ACT and I was accepted into CAS.

Hi, I’m an international who finished high school last November. I’m taking a gap year primarily because I want to gain working experience (currently doing a PE fund internship heh totally loving it, will do a journalism -local newspaper- and bank internship next), do more community service (I have this education/sanitation project going on in Cambodia with friends and am volunteer tutoring kids with chronic illnesses my local country Singapore), which are things I don’t forsee myself as having much time to really put as my top priority while at college since these things represent significant time commitment. Thus I’d like to take this year to do that, and also get the hang of working life, supporting myself 100% financially (as I’m doing now for the first time in my life - FEELS GOOD), and being here for my family as this is an important year for my younger brother. Yeah these are mostly personal reasons.

So my question is - do you know anyone at Penn who did a gap year before, what did they do with their time? I’m feeling really insecure because I don’t know how this decision will help or harm my admission chances - any idea? Really want to apply ED to Penn CAS but the low admission rate is scaring me, considering applying to Cornell ED instead but personally think I’ll prefer Penn (academics, culture and setting wise). Both of these schools are literally on the other side of the globe from where I am so visiting isn’t an option.

Also, I applied to Wharton RD last year but with crap SATs (2090 superscored, 650 math 2, 700 lit) and pretty lousy essays (rushed at the last minute, wasn’t so sure of my direction in life but have since really decided on finance/real estate in Asia since interning) so I’m retaking SATs, ACTs and going to write much better essays. And probably make better decisions about which teachers to ask for recommendations.

Anyone know if the AdComm keeps a record of who’s applied before, and who got rejected? Any idea how this might affect my chances?

THANKS A LOT FOR THIS THREAD. :)

A. According to Penn, yes, applying ED increases your chances and legacies only receive special consideration during this round.
B. Higher is better, as you certainly know. Check out some decisions threads.

Random question: If a student internally transfers from one undergrad school to another, does he/she receive a new email address?

Is it easy to transfer to other higher Ivies from Penn (HYP Columbia) assuming a solid freshman GPA?

Kremlinoncharles why would you apply early decision to Penn if you already know you wouldn’t want to go to school there? Also, I think attempting to order the schools in the Ivy league is pretty silly. Columbia is actually one of the most common schools my classmates have told me that they turned down to go to Penn (I’m sure it works the other way as well).

Re: printers

Coordinate with your roommate on who is bringing a printer. It is most sensible for one roommate to bring a printer and for both of you to share it. You shouldn’t share the cost of purchasing one since you will need to spend time later seeing who is going to take it and whether the one who takes it should pay the other. You should absolutely, of course, share the cost of ink.

If you are doing a program without much printing needed, though, you could always just pay the $0.07 per page at the library or in the college houses. Or find the mystical free printing locations around campus.

Where are critical writing seminars usually held? If I’m taking a critical writing seminar in English, would that be in the English Department’s building?

Also, is it okay to schedule a seminar from 1:30 to 3 and then a class from 3 to 4:30?

Thanks for your help :)

^Are you seriously already scheduling classes?

I’m an upcoming freshman and I had no idea about this.

It’s roughly the time when freshmen get the course register, so you can start thinking about registration. Pre registration will happen in the next few weeks, after you have met either in person or via phone with your pre major advisor.

Writing seminars are held all over the place, so don’t expect them to be in any particular building. Mine was in the McNeil Building for Early American Studies, i.e. the random building outside of Hill and across from Zete that nobody ever goes into for anything ever.

Back-to-back classes are perfectly fine. The course register will tell you that classes run 1:30-3:00, or 10:00-11:00, but that translates to 1:30-2:50 or 10:00-10:50; ten minutes is standard, and professors can’t do anything to stop you from leaving their class to be on time to another, if they run over their allotted 50 or 80 minute slot.

How is stouffer?

Hi everyone!

I’m a rising Senior in the College, and since CAS seems surprisingly underrepresented on this forum, I’d be glad to help answer any and all of your questions! I’m majoring in History with double minors in Comparative Literature and Chinese with plans to go into law.

@jengajenga - I personally lived in the Quad my freshman year but one of my roommates lived in Stouffer as a frosh and loved it! I know that it is considerabley quieter than the Quad and less social, especially if you are looking to meet the other freshman, because it is predominantly an upper class house. However, the rooms seem significantly nicer than the Quad and its in an excellent location (especially for late-night Wawa runs!! - these become very regular)

Are the user ID and password the same for all of these things? Can you explain what each of these are, when you use them? Is the web site down a lot? It seems that putting in the ID and PW often is met with a message that it is incorrect. I wasn’t sure if that was because I was using the wrong combination in the wrong place or the site was down.

Is there any way I can move from stouffer to the quad? Or is it final?
