Current RH freshman open to questions!!

Hey, so I’m interested in dorming at Queen’s Court as a freshman. I understand there’s a procedure to be assigned there, could you explain what I would have to do (write an essay, I hear?). Thanks so much, you’re a wealth of information! :)

You write a brief essay explaining why you would like to live in Queen’s Court and pledging to to refrain from using alcohol and other drugs. It’s not too difficult of a process.

Also, I’ve really enjoyed the Fordham core curriculum and it hasn’t been a burden for me. The core provides a thorough liberal arts education that I believe has dramatically improved my writing and critical thinking skills. While the curriculum may seem large and burdensome, many of my friends look fondly on the classes they were required to take.

Hi, I’m a Chinese girl and admitted into Fordham. I love NYC and the curriculum there. But what confuses me most is that I have several offers from Boston like Bentley and Northeastern and can’t decide where to go. I heard that Fordham is religional and students have to take the compulsory religion courses which take up their time for ohter courses. I want to major in business especially finance. Could you please give me some suggestions?
Thank you a lot and best wishes.

Xiaokun - congratulations on your acceptances. My son is a junior at Fordham’s business school. Nobody can suggest where you should go because it really boils down to what you want in a college, but I will tell you some of the differences I know about these three schools. I don’t know the official rankings, but I think the schools are all fairly similar in reputation.
Fordham - It has easy access to NYC but is on a traditional campus in the Bronx. It is a Jesuit school and it does has a large liberal arts core curriculum – but my son enjoyed most of the required classes and was looking for a strong liberal arts background. You do need to take two religion classes - one is a mandated class and the material covered seems to vary based on the professor. The second religion class is an elective and you can take something like Religions of the World if you want. Fordham draws a number of people from the NY/NJ/CT area but it has been expanding its student base and its reputation .
Bentley - We looked closely at this school for my son and we liked it very much. It is in the suburbs of Boston on a nice campus. But in the end, my son did not want to go to a school that was 100% focused on business. That was his personal choice – another person may like the idea that the school is so business-oriented.
Northeastern - We did not look at this school because it has a coop program which my son was not interested in. But people like the school from what I hear.
You have three great choices. Good luck to you.

Thank you so much. In fact, I still have offers from George Washington and SUNY-Binghamton. I have a guide teacher from America and he suggested me to go to NYC. But there is a voice deep in my heart that Bentley is a really fantastic school but it’s near Boston. Going to NYC means I have the only choice-Fordham. Chinese students hardly have religional beliefs so I think maybe I will have difficulty taking those courses. By the way, NYU didn’t accept me and I felt terrible. Studying near NYU and competing with NYU students will make me stressed. GW has fantastic facilities but I don’t want to take part in politics. Binghamton is a state school, so the class size may be large. What about Babson and Rochester? I’m on their waiting lists. It’s really hard to make a final choice and this experience is totally different from what I have in China.
Millions of thanks for you from the bottom of my heart. Have a good day!

They are all excellent schools. We did not look at Babson or Rochester so I can’t give an opinion on those schools other than to say they have excellent reputations as well. My son’s heart told him to go to Fordham and he has never regretted his choice – but every person is different and I think you should go with your heart as well. If deep down you feel Bentley is the right place for you, then I’d go there. Bentley is in the suburbs but if I remember right, the school runs buses into Boston so the city is accessible. Boston is a great city. You have been accepted into many wonderful schools so congratulations. You cannot make a bad choice.

Hi! What would you say are the 5 things you like best about Fordham, and the 5 things that you like least?

Thank you so much. I’ll make my choice.
Best wishes.

How well is fordham for undecided students? Right now, I’m decided between Binghamton, RIT, and Fordham.

I would think Fordham is an excellent choice for undecided students bc of the core curriculum. You’ll take such a wide variety of required courses and something is sure to spark your interest in a major.

Hello guys, I would like to know how is the grading curve at Gabelli’s school of business. I heard about a grade deflation in which the professors curves to a C oppose to a B at most schools? Can someone verify this? Also, How much does the tuition increase by annually? thank you

How is Fordham’s FA? Specifically if you’re a URM with a 2030 SAT and ~3.75 gpa

Unofficial grade deflation does exist at Fordham, but if you are a good student, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Hey guys, I would suggest checking out the undergraduate bulletin online if you have any more questions about fin.aid, academic policies, etc.

The merit scholarships offered are the presidential, dean’s, and the fordham scholarship for national merit or hispanic recognition competitions. I think performance on the SAT does play a major influence on these scholarships. There are also some URM specific scholarships. Some more awards are listed here: [Fordham University Restricted Scholarships](http://www.fordham.edu/tuition__financial_a/undergraduate_studen/scholarship_search/fordham_university_r/)

OK, really trivial question, but I’ll be commuting, and I’d like to know what everyone uses to carry their stuff around all day. I don’t want to look nerdy walking around with a backpack if it’s out of style in college.

Hi, I just wanted to know what you think the best dorms are? Or just a bit of knowledge you have on each of the freshman dorms. Thanks a lot.

A backpack is fine - whatever style you want. It’s college so no one is really paying attention to that kind of thing like they did in high school (at least not at Fordham).

I think Queen’s Court is the best dorm because it is the most historic building and the residential college aspect of it was really great for community building. But I think most Fordham students are happy with their dorms and each one has its own identity.

Queens Court is a great dorm - my S loved it and made a lot of friends there. BUT you should be aware that Queens Court is a wellness dorm (you have to write a letter saying you will refrain from alcohol/drugs) and it has a lot of programming (you are required to go to something in the dorm two nights a week) so it is not for everyone. Look at yenrod’s comments under the heading “Dorms?” for a description of freshman housing options.

Can someone explain how well do Gabelli’s students do post-undergrad? How many students from Gabelli go to Wall Street, Big 4, or I-Banking? Is Gabelli that much better than Baruch College for Finance/Accounting? In my case its, 15K/year for Fordham or 0 for Baruch…I am willing to invest in Fordham, but is it worth it in my circumstance. thanks
