CURRENT rice/baylor students!!

hey guys!!

i just wanted to see what some of your experiences at rice/baylor was!!! do you like it?? why?? i would love if you are really specific!! like even "i am in this dorm and i like it" or something!!

thanks so much!!! :)

hey-

Rice/Baylor is really awesome. I know that I am biased, here, but I truly believe that it is the absolute best combined program in the country. The best things about it are:

It's not ridiculously hard to stay in the program. Once you are in, you really will go to BCM if you want to.

It's a lot cheaper than other programs, especially those at brown and northwestern b/c tuition is lots lower at Rice and BCM then at other schools and becasue rice gives merit scholarships (yay!)

You will get a great education at both schools (although, before I am attacked, I will agree that that is true of many of the other programs)

You get to live in a pretty cool city. I swear I never thought I'd say it, but Texas really is a fun place to be. Except during presidential elections, but what can you do?

It's 8 years, meaning that you are not rushing your one and only college experience. You can take advantage of all that rice and houston have to offer and you can do great things like study abroad as well.

Um...I can be really long winded, but I am trying to be brief. If you (or anyone else out there!) have any specific questions feel free to ask them here or shoot me an e-mail.

PS. At rice, we don't have dorms, we have colleges...the residential college system is a great part of rice. Just ask me if you want more info on that.

Hi, Just wondering, how competitive is it at Rice though and how do you like living there(city life, campus life, ect...)?

Jenskate1--

thanks so much for your response...and I like long/detailed responses!!! :)

and yes, would that be ok if I send you an email?? I'll try to list out some questions? Thanks SOOO much!!! :)

Hey takingiteasy,

I went to a really competitive high school, so it has been a huge relief for me to come to rice and find an athmosphere of cooperation among the students, and a real sense that even when the workload gets to be a little tough, we are all in this together.

Lots of people set up study groups, or simply work together on problem sets and assignments as the need arises. If you have a question about something, or need someone to pick up notes from a class you have to miss, your classmates are generally really happy to do so. I think this is fostered by having a small student body, since you get to know so many people on campus so well and there is a real sense of community. Something I really like about rice is that when you get tests back, it is really rare for the person next to you to lean over and say, "hey, what did you get?" Which I always hated at my High School. Also, as an aside, profs are really easy to get in touch with if you need help and they do nice things like hold late night review sessions before tests and such.

As for campus life, it's a lot of fun. There is really always something to go to, no matter what you are into. There are lots of parties if you like to drink and/or dance, but I'm not hugely into either and I still manage to have fun. There's lots of sports, since rice is Div. 1 and there are loads of musical performances put on by Shepard School of Music. There's also a lot of events for cultural things and lots of club meetings to go to.

Houston is a pretty good place to go to school, and there's just about everything here, but you have to take a little initiative to go find it. Many students spend a lot of their time on campus, but you don't have to. There's lots of stuff going on in the med center, in terms of research and volunteer opportunites (I volunteer at TX children's hospital, for example), and that's all right across the street. On the other side of campus, there is Rice Village, which is a really nice area to go walking around, go shopping or go out to eat. The museum district is within walking distance, and there are a lot of good museums to go to. Further away from campus, but right on the light rail line are reliant stadium (where the superbowl was last year) and minute maid park (where the all-star game was last year).

Hope that answered your questions - keep them coming!

and Ilovecollege - sure you can send me an e-mail, i'll respond to it as soon as i can.

how competitive is it to get into the program and how many people get into the program annually? Please tell me cause i need to know. lol

The way admission to R/B works is:

You must apply to Rice under either the ED or interim decision plans. The ED deadline has passed, the ID deadline is Dec. 1. If accepted ED, you must attend rice, even if you do not get into R/B. ID is non binding. On your Rice app you must check a box for rice/baylor if you plan to apply.

Once accepted to Rice, you will be sent a supplemental app for R/B in the admissions packet. It is just 2 essays - why do you want to be a doc and how will the R/B program help you do that? and What has been you fave experience ouside of academics? Something like that, anyway.

About 200 people complete that supplemental app.

From those, 40 are selected for an interview. This takes place at BCM during Rice admitted students weekend.

From those, about 20 are selected for the program, and about 15-17 end up attending.

I hope that helped!

Are international students eligible for the Rice/ Baylor program? If yes then are they expected to score just as high in the Verbal SAT I compared to regular US citizen?

Thank you for replying Jenskate1

sorry but most international students get shafted for the MD program, you need to be a US citizen. There are a few private medical schools which allow international students but they demand outrageous amount of fee like $50000 year or so.

Do you know of any medical IVY league schools for which international students can apply? Also do you know of any comparatively cheaper ones?
Thanks for replying

I am not sure if R/B is limited to US citizens. I can't find anywhere that says that. I would suggest that you contact admissions directly and ask them. However, they do put this in the website:

"The policy of Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine is to attract to their faculty, staff, and student body qualified persons of diverse backgrounds. In accordance with this policy, neither institution discriminates in admissions, educational programs, or employment against any individual on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, age, national or ethnic origin, or handicap."

So maybe you are eligible.

Thanks for the information. Do you know of any BS/ MD programs that international students are eligible for?

I don't, off the top of my head. Maybe you should take a few hours and just call a lot of them and ask. That's probably what I would do if I were in your situation.

Jenskate, What do you think the average SAT verbal and Math score separately is for those who are selected? Also do you think they would acknowledge the fact that English is my Second Language therefore a low score of 650 on verbal is in a way justified? I passed the AP english Language exam.

I can't imagine that they would not take into account the fact that English is not your first language. The fact that you did well on AP lit will probably help you. I might discuss in your interview if you get one, if you feel like you can talk about it in an interesting way (it was hard but i persevered and did well, etc.) This doesn't necesssarily put you in the clear, though. I don't know what the average score for those accepted is, but you can look around at the stats of people on this board and imagine that those are the people that you will be competing against, and some of them will ultimately be accepted.

Hey jenskate--What were your stats coming out of HS to get into this program? I'm graduating a year early from high school so I can finish my ADN. Would that give me an edge over other applicants? I already have the good class rank-1/100, and for the practice PSAT, I would have gotten NMS. I've already got some good ECs with awards, but I better start volunteering @ hospitals!
This is so awesome that you came to this board! Rice/Baylor is my dream program!
Thanks!

I posted this on another thread, but here it is again:
sure, i'd love to.

SAT: 1540 (800V, 740m)

SATIIs: 790 BioM, 790 Math IIC, 770 writing (i think, i kind of forget that one!)

GPA: my school was on a really weird scale, but I had something like 5/5.4 (although the most anyone really could get was 5.2 or something...basically i didn't have anything other than A's and A+'s in almost all honors and AP, except for health, chorus, and a computer programming course that weren't honors.

Rank: top 10%, although i was really close to making the top 5%, so i think my counselor might have written top 6%, maybe...

EC's:
Science research (I've posted about what i did on other threads if you are interested)
President of my high school's science olympiad team, which went to nationals that year
Academic team (like quiz bowl)
national honor society

Volunteer work:
Hospital Volunteer 300+ hours
Founder and assistant coach of special olypics long island figure skating program
NYC olympic bid comittee special events volunteer
historical reenactor (weird, i know)

awards:
national merit scholar
intel sts semi
ap scholar
bausch and lomb science award

ok, i think that's about it. I hope that helps in terms of my stats - so you can see, they were reasonable, but not perfect, so fear not.

hey all! does anyone know the link for the rice/baylor program if there is one? just wanted some more info on it... thanks alot!

I was wondering if you could elaborate on your science research.

Thanks a lot.
