what is the social life of rice? Do people actually have one? I was reading some posts on the harvard site, and was wondering if rice students arent socialites as well...

also...

ive heard stories that most students at rice were "outsiders" in their respective HSs, and by going to rice, the "outsiders" have now become the "insiders"..is this true? Do most rice students suffer from lack of a healthy social life in their own HSs?

They take a lot of valedictorians and top-of-class people from what statistics say. So best guess, I would put them at that stereotype. Imagine about 750 people very similar to the last three years of valedictorians...to some that could mean "outsiders" like you say, but to others it could just mean very successful people. I don't know any better than you though, sorry.

I lost many coolness points in high school by being the president of the engineering club and being really into math/science and such, but I wasn't particularly hated by anyone. At Rice, I rapidly became the center of a good number of social circles, since intelligence was no longer taboo. This happened to the majority of the people at Rice, from my experience...

at my high school the science kids were pretty well respected, so I have always been cool. j/k, kind of.

But, in general, people at rice tend to be sort of the "cool nerds." Like not the super nerdy loser types - rather, the smart, involved, fun types.

I would agree with jenskate, most people at Rice seemed to be "cool nerds" in highschool. There are the socially awkward nerds type people, but they definitely only compose a minority of the student body.

You do have a lot of people who were at the top or near the top of their highschool class, but that isn't a bad thing. Even people who might not have been too social at highschool generally find Rice a much more amiable environment, with the camaraderie that is created by the college system you really have to make a concious effort to be a loner.

Depends on how you define social life. From what I've seen and heard, we aren't a super-party school. But people definitely know how to have fun. I haven't met too many people who are overly studious to the point that they migrate between the library and the dining hall. Most people are pretty chilled out and know how to have fun.

Rice is a great place to go to school. The residential college system is great, and my classes have been pretty good. It's also a pretty good place to learn and get things done, but I wouldn't decide to come here because of the student body.

I was one of them! And good thing I did cuz otherwise you got stuck with Firstname.Lastname@rice.edu. Of course, you can create 'vanity' emails but that's all another thing. You probably don't wanna get hooked onto facebook at this early point. :)

im a cool nerd in my high school. i have lots of friends and i make really good grades. i say it depends in my high school. in mine, we all have fun and do things together. i am not an outsider at all man. i cant wait till rice next fall!

Umm, I think the site was http://apply.rice.edu/
Basically it allowed you to set up an email that forwarded to your secondary address. I don't know if it was legal/illegal/stupid/smart but it worked and no one did anything to me.
