Hey RPI peeps,

I am curious to know about the city of Troy itself. How is your expereince in the city? Is it safe? Any fun stuff to do? Is it suburban, urban, or rural? I didn't take any of these factors into consideration (iknow, i know, stupid stupid stupid) but I LOVED RPI's presentation and their degrees offered. Their financial aid options are not bad. Anyway, please post anything about the social life of the school as well as the city. THANKS!

i'm just a high school senior.

my dad went to RPI, though, and i lived in Troy, New York for 6 years.

It's safe. Suburban. Quiet.

Gets REALLY cold in the winter. Lots of crazy snowfall. Be prepared.

not really too much to do, in the city itself. it's cute, and there are a couple events every now and then. Maybe Albany would be better... it's only 10 miles away.

as for social life. well, guys outnumber girls a lot, so there's not much interaction there. but they're all cool people, i would assume.

Now to dispel all the things that allure made up about Troy.

Troy is safe if you stay in the right places downtown, mainly 4th street. Very easy to get mugged if you don't travel in a group, decent amount of fights that Troy people start because they hate RPI students. You might think who would walk at night, but hell when you are coming back from the bars sometimes you dont want to pay $8 for a cab by yourself.

Winter is super cold, not that much snowfall, its similar to the amount in boston if you're familiar with that area at all.

City is cute? Not sure what you're talking about, nothing is ever happening in troy, EVER. There are very few places to go mainly Elda's, El Dorado, Hudson Duster, and The Ruck which are pretty much just college bars cause they require RPI, russell Sage or Sienna IDs to get in. Despite that a girl was date raped at one a few months ago and given a horse tranquilizer so that she couldnt get pregnant and do a paternal test. The results of the tranquilizer are permanent, and she can no longer have kids. There's very little more going on in Albany than Troy, there are more people at bigger bars, that's about it.

All cool people? I wish that was True. You're coming to RPI, a school 55% engineering and like 85% hard sciences/engineering. You're dealing with the biggest nerds from your high school in most cases. Feel free to start a thread if you want more RPI questions answered, I can give you the straight up facts about other stuff too such as drinkign or whatever.

RPI is still awesome :)!

WHO CARES ABOUT THE TROYLET?! GO RPI!

LoL. I hope I get in. I love the school a lot, and I know I would probably fit in there since I am sorta already classified as a nerd. I've talked to several current RPI students and I can safely assume that most people that attend RPI are cool.

The engineering school is top notch, if you're getting As then you *ing know your * in almost all cases. But there are a lot of negatives about the school, personally I think if not for my friends here I would have tranferred schools. But some people prefer a very different environment than i do, I don't like to stay in my dorm room and code on a friday night. A lot of people do, probably as high a percentage as any other school in the country.

If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them.
