Current Sophomore at Purdue Studying Engineering- Any questions?

@Seirsly: I was an intern for a civil engineering firm in chicago last summer before I came to Purdue. I was working with Microstation and Cross Sections of like 80 miles of road… Props to you for being patient enough for that major hahaha.

@naturaldistaster: Again, no problem! All Boilermakers with good info/ advice are welcome :)

@Descuff: Harrison Grille has delicious drunk food if you don’t want to travel far from the dorms on that side of campus. Also- make sure you go to Famous Franks at least once while your here… it’s an experience hahaha!

@anonemuss I’m going to Japan for my Spring Semester next year. Purdue has a whole bunch of programs to study abroad. There are a few:
[Office of Programs for Study Abroad - Purdue University](http://www.studyabroad.purdue.edu/)
<a href=“Office of Professional Practice - Purdue University”>Office of Professional Practice - Purdue University;

^ I second about Harrison Grille being great drunk food if you’re on that side of campus. Or procrastination food. Or exam mind-fcked you food. It’s one of the things I miss the most about the dorms. Famous Franks is also awesome. I had a hot dog with barbeque pulled pork on top of it. SO GOOD. Like Chauncey/the bars area is just a fun people-watching place to go on the weekends to people watch if drinking isn’t your thing. Like drunk-eating at Taco Bell down there makes you see interesting things. I was down there a few weeks ago and someone got kicked out of the restaurant, and that was really funny.

Lol look like I’ll be searching for both restaurants.

Mkobrien: We use Microstation too (I love it). I’m planning to be a structural engineer hopefully, none of this surveying crud. Ugh! So glad I’m leaving before work starts on like… 200 miles of rail in Florida! But god, this project.

How have I never been to Famous Franks yet??? I’ve walked down there often too…

Lol guys. Sounds like civil engineering is some hard work.

All engineering can be hard work. Civil engineers just tend to be the least well paid. TT __ TT
But it’s all worth it if I can do what I want in the future!!! At least that’s what I’m telling myself.

So for gen Ed classes, you wouldn’t have to take any say if you had enough ap credits right?

How are communal showers? Where do we hang our dry stuffs? Do clothes, towels get stolen? Do most guys where robe, nothing but shorts/undies, or clothes to the shower? What are the chances of seeing a girl at night around 10pm?

The showers aren’t bad. They’re individual stalls. I would wear my robe to the shower. I know quite a few people just wear their towels. I never heard of anything getting stolen. But it would be a funny prank and wouldn’t put it past some guys. Seriously though, it’s not a concern. There’s like a little hall between the showers that you can out your dry things in and hooks for towels.

I’m not sure what you mean by see a girl at 10pm? 10pm isn’t late, so you can certainly hangout with people at that time. Or do you mean a girl be visiting on your floor around then? I wouldn’t worry about that too much because people commonly hangout on people’s rooms, not just randomly in the hallway.

Would you recommend netbook or laptop for classes?

Anonemuss: Depends on your major’s requirements. My major requires me to take at least 6 credits of non-introductory gen eds, 6 in Humanities and 6 in Social Sciences. It’s kind of complicated. You could at least get a lot of the classes out of the way.

Descuff: Any girl would be escorted around by a male and she’s not allowed in your bathrooms at all, if that’s what you’re worried about. I’ve walked around owen a bit before and seen lots of guys in towels.

Anonemuss: Depends what major and what you want to do with it, and your budget and stuff. Generally, you don’t need anything more than pencils, calculators, notebook/paper. If the class requires a computer, you’ll be in a computer lab.

Anonemuss: It also depends how you learn. There were some classes, like math for example, where if I typed my notes I didn’t really absorb the material. Not to mention sometimes it’s actually faster to freehand. For FYE, I would DEFINITELY recommend to bring your laptop to class. You should get used to using the programs on your own computer. Also, just a word to the wise. For FYE, if you go to office hours the night before something is due… (which you should try to avoid anyways) show up as early as you can. There was a night where the TAs had to start turning people away because the room’s capacity (200) was met.

Descuff: When I lived in Earhart we would cut through the guys side all the time Unescorted… It’s faster when it’s cold as balls outside haha. Just wear a towel to the shower. In terms of girls I guess it kind of depends who lives on your hall to be honest. Because even on the girls side on my floor we always had guys that were hanging out.

@Seirsly: Hahaha, I feel your pain. Good luck! Also- I think Famous Franks is only open after midnight (someone help me out here)… I would advise against going there sober.

Dang, googled it, you’re about right. Well, I’ll do it before I graduate I guess. Sometime. I just want a good hot dog or corn dog!!

@anon: why would you want a netbook? I think a laptop would be more practical…

But yea when I mention girls I meant when I would be like showering at 10 not as in general visit.
But nice to know. My mom and grandpa wanted me to wear a bathrobe… which is not my style.

@ Descuff more battery life. Laptop gives you 2 hours at most while netbook gives you 8. At least more me these are the circumstances.

But laptop can last 8 hours. Heck MacBook can last even longer. The laptop I’m getting have a battery life of 6 hours… Also the new Intel processor increase battery life and it’s not like there won’t be an outlet everywhere u go in this day and age.

With the right settings, I can get around 8 hours easy. The only thing is, my laptop adds a little bit less than 5 lbs to my bag, which sucks.
