Current status questions

Hey everyone, Im kind of new here and have alot of questions about my current HS status that maybe some of you could help me answer so gather round Im about to tell a story. Im currently a sophomore in HS in NY and ever since high school started my grades have been complete trash. Its not that i dont understand the work or the tests are too hard, I actually understand the material better than most of my class and my test grades are great despite not taking notes, I have a good amount of EC's ( football team, chess club, debate team, mock trial, track, wrestling, violin, and planning to volunteer at a hospital soon). But sadly Im a huge procrastinator and dont do much homework so my grades are in the 70's. Im planning to get serious about school Junior year because I now have a solid goal. I want to become a surgeon. Im trying to see if I can take 2 or 3 AP sciences for next year and would love the challenge. But i have the option to graduate next year because i have extra credits. Is one year enough to raise my GPA to a respectable level or should i stay for senior year? If i get 90's in all of my classes what would my GPA be approximately? What are some ways to overcome procrastination or laziness in general? I have more questions but Ill wait till these get resolved to ask. Thank you for your time.

Don’t graduate early. I had the same choice. I could’ve actually graduated after sophomore year. When I asked about graduating after junior year, every college said it was a bad idea.

Yeah, don’t graduate early, you need the time to actually show your true colors and what you have to offer. Also, I’m glad to see a student interested in a medical career! You should try to AP science classes to get ahead in college so you can get ready for that MCAT! Procrastination is like a virus, the only way to get rid of it, is to treat it. Create a To-Do-List and stick with it. Put homework on top of that list. We all get it, homework IS boring, to get rid of the boredom, reward yourself, nothing big, but something you can look forward to. When I didn’t feel like doing homework during the last week of school, I rewarded myself by treating myself to some ice-cream and ate it with some of my favorite music. Also try to make things fun, like teaching some of you material to your parents. I have this study technique where I would gather my family members and teach the material I learned to them, and If I slipped on a topic or forgot something, then that told me I needed to study that one thing. My family likes when I do it, also it’s fun  When the evil Procrastinating virus is defeated, make sure you don’t catch it again. Use preventative techniques such as studying earlier in topics, doing homework right when you get home from school and have fun with it. This got me through chemistry :)

So bad news for me, in my school you need a recommendation letter from a previous teacher to get into any AP classes. Yesterday i asked my chemistry teacher if he could give me the recommendation he asked me to give him a day to decide but eventually said no even though im one of the best kids in his class and got a 90 he said its because i dont do homework. I dont think ill be able to apply for an AP again till next semester but just in case i dont get one, what should i do that could take place of an AP for a college application?

I would suggest to keep up with the Honors courses.

If you can’t challenge the school, just take the honors course and self-study the AP. If you can overcome the procrastination its nearly as good as taking the class in school.

Try to do Dual Enrollment

Whats a dual enrollment

Dual enrollment is when you take classes at your high school for half the day and for the other half you go to a local community college and earn credits from actual college classes. Only some schools offer it so you should probably ask your counselor.
