Current Stern Sophomore: Ask Me

As long as you’re able to find a way to articulate that story in your essays and include the business experience in your application, that’s pretty remarkable and should help you.

Thank you:)

Thanks for the responses. I liked IAG (went for one meeting), I guess my friends and I might check out Finance Society as well.

Fun question: do you like the new stern websites look?

Nope, not too much a fan of it. It’s better aesthetically for sure, but functionally it’s less appealing.

Any more? Just got through first round of midterms …

Relating to my last question, do you know anyone who got in with a subpar GPA, like 3.2-3.3 UW?

Hey man. I have a question regarding gaining admission to the school. So here’s the dilemma i’m having. I basically have a 97.51 gpa coming out of a top 4 nyc public high school and i’m applying ED at Stern. But this year (senior year) i’m taking AP calc and i already failed my first calc test (62%). I am wondering that if I end up getting a bad grade in ap calc by the end of the term which ends around the end of january, will they rescind admission? Or if i don’t get accepted into stern and have to cross my fingers for another university, will getting that 70-75 in ap calc in senior year hurt my chances for other business schools? I feel like all my hard work throughout high school is getting undone… today has been horrible. My SAT’s are 2110 (650 CR, 710M, 750W) and 720 USH, probably 730 math 2. My EC’s are good and business-related. Let me know man, thanks.

Hi, I am an international student applying ED to NYU for Fall 2012. I have a great interest in Economics, it is definitly a passion I wish to pursue whole heartedly in the future. However, I’m skeptical about the benefits of majoring in Economics. How are the internship/future job opportunities as a CAS Econ major compared to getting a business degree from Stern?

Also, do private universities like NYU favor international students over American locals or is that just a rumor?

Thanks,
openbook94

@They do not rescind over one grade. They understand the process seniors go through, and they probably won’t even question it. If you ever do get a question about it, just give a reasonable explanation. At worst it’d be a phone call to inquire about it.

@openbook
I don’t think they prefer international students. I’ve never even heard of that. For job opportunities, Stern > CAS. Fact.

Thank you sooo much for making this thread, hellodocks

Hi hellodocks,

I’m part of the Class of 2016 at Stern (deferment for 1 year). Would like to know more about doing part-time internships during the school term in the city, and the possible implications with regards to the 1-year working experience guideline for internationals.

Thanks in advance.

@the black kid
Retake the SAT and you’re golden. Don’t submit your ACT.

@sgang
I have no experience with internationals working through the except my one friend from Canada. He has an incredibly hard time interning because he needs sponsorship. Literally, he got Goldman Sachs and had to decline it. In general, there’s a large number of kids with part-time or “off cycle” internships in accounting, law, banking, trading, consulting, or PR. It’s easily balanced with school if you’re good at time management. For internationals, it gets more complicated because of the visa situation.

Do I have any chances at Sterns?
Hey Everyone, i am a sophomore at Rutgers Business School, NB. I am an accounting major but i want to double major in Finance. But RBS do not offer this combination at NB campus so i want to transfer to some other school. I did my high school from one the most prestigious boarding school in India (ranked number 3 this year) and the oldest boarding school in Asia (I don’t know if this info makes any difference in admission process). My stats are:

High School GPA: 3.8
College credits: 33 ( I will finish 63 at the end of spring 2012)

College GPA: 3.95 (with business courses and some 300 level courses)
SAT: 1730 (writing=480, Math=610, Verbal=640, I did bad on my SAT as I am not a Native English speaker, I prepared for it in a month as I had no idea what SAT was in my High School) But i got B+ in my expository class which is considered very difficult writing class at rutgers.
Treasurer of a Business Club at Rutgers Business School,
School Rifle Shooting team (Participated in inter school and inter district levels)
School Prefect and various other honors and awards.

Schools I am Applying to:
NYU Sterns
Georgetown Mcdonough
U of Michigan Ross School of Business
Cornell…

Can you guys please tell me if you see chances of me getting in any of these. Thanks.

With the new standardized testing rule in NYU, I would like to just report my IB diploma predicted grades. That is fine, correct?

[Standardized Tests](<a href=“Standardized Tests”>Standardized Tests)

can anyone tell me what is the tuition for stern undergraduate program? every website lists it at 45k however stern website shows it at 19k…
also what are the chances for aid in regular decision round?

Check this
Tuition;

Does not include 10-13k for room/year, appx 1000 for books and stationery per semester, appx 2000 for medical insurance for one year and dining 1500-2000 per year

Hi hellodocks,

Thanks for your earlier response. I’m actually thinking about taking up a 3-week course at the LSE Summer School, specifically ‘Introductory Macroeconomics’. Would it be of help in gaining credit exemptions, especially since I understand that most courses in Stern only offer placement tests & no full exemptions?

Here’s the course description:

EC102: Introductory Macroeconomics

Session: One
Prerequisites: None

Dr Barbara Petrongolo
Dr Javier Ortega

This course aims to help you understand recent developments in Macroeconomics using graphic analysis and simple algebra. We will study the stylised facts of business cycle fluctuations, economic growth and unemployment; discuss what light modern macroeconomics can shed on these facts; and finally evaluate the scope for policy to improve macroeconomic performance.

The course will cover: the determinants of long-run economic growth, inflation and unemployment; economic pathologies such as persistent unemployment and high inflation; the cyclical behaviour of the economy; the influence of monetary and fiscal policy; the benefits and perils of financial intermediation; and the credit crunch.

Lectures: 36 hours Classes: 12 hours
Assessment: Two written examinations

@nsanshu
I think they will look very favorably at your college record, but the record in high school might cause some concern. That GPA would be factored more than the standardized testing, but it’s still an awful score. Georgetown is a lower-ranked business program but they are a better university overall, but I have little experience with them. Ross is roughly comparable to Stern.

@cliffhanger
I have no idea, I am not familiar with the IB program at all, sorry.

@wresling
Aid is horrible here regardless of what round you apply in. Your total cost including upperclassman housing will be in excess of $60,000 a year here. You might be at $58,000 or so frosh year but with the ~2% annual tuition bump I don’t even see that lasting much longer.

@sgang
You are far better off calling and asking the undergrad advising office in Stern. They’ll give you a definite answer, which I can’t simply because I don’t work there. +1-212-998-4020

Lol, I’m really nervous. Do you know any of the “bottom” 200 or so that had sub 3.5s?

I’m sure they were there, but in general, people don’t talk about high school stuff. The only way people know each other’s stats is from reviewing resumes or if they volunteer it out loud. It’s rare to come across lower stats.
