Current Stern Sophomore: Ask Me

ALSO:

Anyone here who’s actually been accepted to Stern '15 go ahead and PM me. As I said before I’ll probably be one of the Orientation Leaders for both Welcome Week and perhaps your entire fall-semester Cohort Leadership Project. Anyone I’ve helped here who’s committing to Stern I have no problem helping on-campus. PM me and I’ll make sure to be a resource for you as you transition to the city.

Thanks for the response! I decided to go with majoring at stern and minoring in bemt because of the extra range of opportunities that I could apply my degree too. One more question though, whats the difference between the bemt minor and specialization? The website was a little unclear. Thanks!

The minor is for those who have the credit flexibility to declare something that requires 24 credits. The specialization is for those who want the same thing but don’t have the credit space; consequently, it has fewer required classes in each of the three schools, Stern, Tisch, and Steinhardt but still allows you to quantify your coursework for your resume.

Anyone else? I’ve gotten ton of PMs but no posts.

Hey two quick questions:

Which dorm would you recommend for incoming freshman at Stern (not sure if you’ve answered this)?

Although is probably a question for the NYU site, if I want to visit NYU do I have to schedule a visit or can I just go? Also, do they tour you around Stern or just general NYU?

Thanks in advance.

I was just wondering how low is too low for Stern regarding math scores? I have a 680 SAT I and a 740 on Math Level I subject test. Would my 750 on Critical Reading somewhat shield these low scores? I would assume more weight is put on Math for admissions so this is what makes me really worried and wondering if I should just apply to CAS. Any input is appreciated.

My second question is if the BEMT minor is offered for CAS students as well. Thank you!

Hello!

I was wondering how competitive is it to transfer from CAS to Stern

once accepted

do you know anyone who has transferred?

Thank You!

Goddard (special-interest, requires an application), Third North (largest freshman building in the country, social scene), or Founders (newest building) probably.

I don’t know if there are Stern-only tours. There are tours you can schedule through the office of Admissions that take you around NYU’s general campus. I’m sure that’s something you can arrange online or over the phone.

@rocknroll
Well, your math subsection isn’t that bad, but submitting a Math I subject test that isn’t over 750 might be a bit iffy. Most kids take Math IIc and pull a low-to-mid 700. A 750 in CR is excellent. It will allow you to place out of WTE into Commerce and Culture, a Stern-only writing course that is nowhere near as bad as WTE.

That’s an interesting question about BEMT, I don’t know if it’s open just to kids in Stern, Steinhardt, or Tisch or to everyone. I’m more inclined to say it’s open to everyone, but if you find something different on this page, go by that.
Hey Helldocks,

I appreciate this thread…very helpful

I was wondering if you could chance me for Stern:

GPA: 3.8/4
Rank: about 18/1200
SAT I: M: 730 CR: 700 W:610 (Total: 2040)
SAT II’s: None

AP’s : Calc BC - 5, Psych 5, Human Geo 5, World History 4, USH 5

EC’s: just a bunch of clubs, no business related

Match.

Good GPA, terrific class ranking, decent SAT (fairly low, 2100 is roughly average but Math subsection is your strong point and CR is not too bad considering), and great APs. If you had good recommendations and could write strong essays I imagine it oughtn’t to be too challenging.

Hey would you be able to link me where Stern places its undergrads? I can find %'s, just not where. Thanks.

hey helldocks,

i’m currently studying in a state college in NY, and contemplating a fall 2011 transfer to stern. Are you certain about the 69% asian population because that seriously seems extreme considering the overall population to consist of 21% asians. And could you embellish me with more specific stats of yours–I find it really interesting that you chose Stern over Wharton (i’m applying to both).

Thank you!

hey helldocks

I was wondering how competitive is it to transfer from CAS to Stern once accepted

do you know anyone who has transferred?

Thank You!

@sasasa
I tried my best to find an undergraduate placement report for you, but the best I could come up with was this: [NYU Stern | Placement Reports](http://www.stern.nyu.edu/OCD/Recruiters/PlacementReports/index.htm) You probably found it as well, and as you can see it’s at the MBA level. I found PhD ones as well, but nothing undergrad. I’m surprised to see that, because Wharton releases them for undergrad because one of my friends there emailed me it to rub it in my face that I should’ve gone there instead. >=) They placed an absurd number of kids into buy-side positions straight out of undergrad.

@relish
I guarantee you. Ask anyone else here, they’ll tell you it’s overwhelmingly Asian. To be frank, a lot of kids blame the general impression Stern carries on that factor. It’s a bunch of kids who are far more willing to lock themselves in the basement studying for three days straight than do anything else. I’m not sure how much I agree with that, but I can definitely agree with the percentages. Every time I go on Facebook at least 80% of the “people you may know” are random Asians whose names I couldn’t even begin to pronounce.

@tmdehf
I know no one who has successfully transferred internally. I know there are kids who have done it, I just don’t know any personally. I know only six 2013 kids who have transferred from other schools as well.

I imagine it’s incredibly competitive internally, because they see that you indicated a primary interest in something entirely irrelevant to business (unless it was econ or international relations in CAS maybe). You could theoretically do it, but the figures of kids who do it is probably exceptionally low.

Anyone else?

hey hellodock
I’ve read all the questions & replies and those were really informative.
Thanks A LOT!! But one more thing:
Would you please chance me for Stern EDII?
Applied as Management concentration,

GPA: 4.76/5.00 (No ranking, but very very competitive school)
SAT: CR 710, Math 770, Writing 690
SAT II: Math2 800, Chemistry 730
AP: Took 5 APs and got all 4
Extra: 5 leadership posts including president of student government (partially related to management and finance)
Essay & recommendations are both excellent

Probably a fairly good match. 1480 on your SAT subscore, 800 SAT Math II, good APs. Unless your essays aren’t as good as you think, probably a solid chance.

Hey hellodocks I was wondering how much NYU costs roughly for a freshman without any aid.

Around 55k? Or more?

More like $58,000 with freshman housing included.

Wow…do most students pay that rate? Or do people get some off?
