Current Student Answering Questions!

Hey,
I’m a current freshman at Tisch (Drama Major) and if you guys have any questions about NYU, I’d like to help answer them!

This is probably a really stupid question, but I was just wondering: Can I audition for both Tisch and Steinhardt?

I’m not a student, but no, you CANNOT audition for both Tisch and Steinhardt. In fact, at NYU, you may apply to just ONE school in the university and only be considered for one school only.

Curious to know. If you are accepted ED, does your acceptance come with a studio placement and if not, when do you know? Thanks!

SmokeandFire, What are you majoring in?? Film, music, musical theatre??

alexg96, smokeandfire indicated that he/she is a drama major at Tisch. The music school at NYU is in Steinhardt not Tisch.

halflokum, unfortunately studio placements are not sent out until april- both for ED and RD applicants. I remember mine came on april 7–I applied RD and my friend who applied ED got her email just a few hours before me. All the emails will be sent at roughly the same time though.

So I’m doing some fishing, and I keep hearing how amazing TISCH is… So I go into the website, but I find nothing other than MUSICAL THEATRE HISTORY, so, and it’s probably a n00b question but w/e, is DRAMA the same as MT for Tisch? or do they just give acting more relevance than dance and vocals?

Thanks ^^

go to this page and click on the links for primary studio training and advanced studio training, and then on each, click on the links for the different studios to see the training that is offered. The only Studio that a freshman is placed into specifically for MT training is the New Studio on Broadway, but other studios offer some MT training elements.

Those who “major” in MT, receive a BFA in Drama at Tisch. That is the formal name of the degree, whether you are in MT or Acting. However, New Studio on Broadway is the MT studio. If placed in that studio, the curriculum is a balance of acting, singing, and dance. Then, ALL Tisch Drama students (including those focusing on MT) take Theater Studies courses, plus liberal arts. Tisch does offer what a BFA in MT offers at other schools (in New Studio on Broadway, and formerly at CAP21 studio) but the formal title of the degree is BFA Drama.

Here is a link to the New Studio on Broadway at Tisch…which is their BFA program with MT training.

I am SO sorry everyone, but I was away and without a computer. But now I am back and will answer questions promptly, haha  Thanks for everyone else’s help answering questions, but I’m going to be okay on my own now.

Haha, trust me, there is NO such thing as a stupid question when it comes to college applications. I’ve learned from experience. But to answer your question, no. You may not audition for Tisch and Steinhardt, you must pick one. Good luck!!

Sort of…Basically, you are accepted and know that you are in the drama program, and you ARE placed into a studio, everyone is. However you find out what that studio is when everyone else does in late March/early April.

I am majoring in drama!

Well, drama is not the SAME. MT kids take an acting class, but they also take musical classes and dance classes. The MT studio is called the New Studio, and half of it contains drama kids, while the other half are Musical Theatre kids.

If you click on this link it will tell you about the program and in the top right corner there is a link to a PDF which gives a sample schedule

Hi SmokeandFire! Thanks for your help.
Please confirm if you can that since “turn of the century” means 10 years before and 10 years after a new century, then an 1895 monologue by Mr Wilde would qualify for a contemporary monologue as defined by NYU/Tisch as being from the turn of the century on? Especially since Wilde was progressive in his work? Thanks!

What I heard is that a contemporary monologue means a monologue written during or after 1900. To be safe, go with one written during or after 1900.

However, if you simply MUST do this monologue (I AM NOT SURE IF IT IS NOT ALLOWED. Do not quote me saying it is totally not allowed, I’m not sure. I am just saying to be SAFE do a post-1900 one), I highly recommend calling the Tisch office of admissions and asking someone there if it is okay. Call starting January 4 - that’s when they reopen. It can’t hurt to call and ask, and I’m sure they will answer your question more definitively than I can.

Here’s the number - 212 998 1850

Good luck :]

Thank-you for the info and the phone number!

Thanks all for the reply. I’ve got another question if you don’t mind. I’m betting the answer to this is “it depends on the school” so I’ll ask if you can address it specifically to Tisch but if you know anything else about the rest of the world, that would be grea too. Assuming a prospective student is academically qualified at whatever school so that is off the table:

When in the process do things like resume and references come into play at Tisch? For example, there are schools like Michigan that prescreen you before offering an audition slot. I assume prescreening might include reading references and looking at the resume (although I don’t know this for sure). At Tisch, as far as I can tell, there isn’t a prescreen. So my question is, when if ever in the process would they look at your references and experience and what if anything do those things count for?

Would there ever be such a thing as a scenario where somebody has a killer audition, but has light experience and references and they are admitted or the other extreme, where somebody has an off day at auditions but has such stellar experience and references and they are admitted.

I guess this is longwinded way of asking, is the audition the “final frontier” at most schools or not?

Thank you!

Tisch does not accept artistic references, only academic ones. I do believe the audition is really important, not just to wow them, but if you read Doctor John’s audition advice, I think that Tisch, too, is trying to see the “real you.” They want to know not just about what you did in the past (except insofar as the applicant demonstrates a history of passion and persistence), but your potential for training and development as an artist.

At Tisch, too, MT students can be placed in acting, so if the singing and dancing is off, they still might be interested in the student for the school.

I don’t know that this answers your question, but I don’t think it really can be answered.

Thank you SDonCC. That is probably as good an answer as exists for my question.

I know that NYU has separated from CAP21 for their MT. I’m wondering what the thought is on the “new” program- even if it has been just a semester so far

I don’t know if SmokeandFire is a student in New Studio on Broadway. Hopefully he or she will say so.

Meanwhile, here is a post by BvilleLady about her son’s experience in New Studio (she may be a good person to ask):

Here is a thread by mema123 who is a freshman in the New Studio for MT. NOTE that in POST #18 on this thread, she comments about the program itself:

She would be someone to ask too.
