Current Student Answering Questions!

thanks…you’re such a great resource soozievt!

Re #15: D called NYU/Tisch and they define “Turn of the Century” as 1900+. Thanks for the tip, Smoke and Fire!

OK, another question for the helpful Tisch Drama student! The next monologue in question is from a play published only a decade ago or so, which would make it contemporary. However, the play is based on a book from around 1840 and the language reflects the earlier time period. Contemp or classical?

^^^I’m not SmokeandFire…and don’t rely on what I am saying, as it is my opinion…best to check with the school…but…

I would have thought of the play as contemporary as it was recently published. It doesn’t matter that the source material is much older.

What comes to my mind, for example, is the musical my own D wrote that is being produced in NYC and it is contemporary, but the source material is from Greek Mythology!

Soozievt- Your’re right I’m sure- it would be silly to rule out everything modern that was inspired by something old. SmokeandFire please correct us if we are wrong. Thanks!

Okay, keep in mind that I don’t work in the Admissions Office, so I’m going to try and give you an answer based on what I have heard. No, there is no prescreening at Tisch. The recommendation letters (I guess what you call references) are used during the academic decision (Keep in mind that the acceptance is based 50% on the audition and 50% on the academics). The first scenario is much more likely. It doesn’t really matter HOW much experience you have, as long as you show at the audition that you have something that the teachers can work with.

Stellar experience can also mean different things. If you mean that your experience is starring roles in blockbuster movies, you’re probably going to be admitted (They do that at any school – famous people are more likely to get admitted by being famous). But if you mean you’ve done a million plays, I’m sure it will count for something, but the audition is the most important part of that whole part of the application. The resume is probably used like the extracurriculars are used in the academic application – to show involvement and interest in theatre. But if you don’t have a resume dripping with leading roles, it not lessen your chance of getting in.

Not too sure, as I am not in the New Studio (I am in the Meisner Studio for anyone who is curious). Sorry 

However, this person is an MT major at the New Studio if you would like to ask questions:

Good Luck!

I’m going with contemporary, since the actual play is contemporary, but again I don’t want to mess up your chances so I would suggest calling.

Hi everyone! I am also an MT NSB major, if anyone has questions about that. I also have another thread specifically about the MT program:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/nyu-tisch-mt/998295-anyone-have-questions-about-program.html

feel free to ask any questions there or here

Ahh actually no, sorry…I made this post for people who have questions about Meisner/Drama/Tisch for me! However if you would like to make your own post feel free to do that somewhere else!

haha wow, ok, just trying to help people out. As you can see, I also posted a link to my thread.

This is a forum for Tisch music theater, by the way-maybe starting a thread in the straight drama forum would be more helpful.

When I went to “Colleges,” then NYU, it led me here, so I made a post here. Unfortunately, I do not have the power to move it and therefore made it clear in the first post that I am a drama student, therefore able to answer questions about drama. It’s kind of you to be willing to help out other, but I was just suggesting you do it in your own post, instead of dominating mine. There’s no need to get so offended and defensive

SmokeandFire, I visit the Tisch MT sub-forum we are on now, the general Music Theatre forum and the Theatre and Drama forum on a regular basis. I know the kids and parents who visit the straight acting forum would be happy to see you post there. A moderator might be able to assist you in moving your thread. (?) Or You could start a new thread and head it “Tisch Drama (Non-MT) Questions Answered Here” or something like that.

My son is in New Studio MT, but he has friends in the other acting studios. He’s always curious to hear about their experiences. You could be very helpful to the many high school kids–and their parents, lol–who lurk here by discussing Meisner and sharing your experiences there. Or stay here. It’s up to you.

Thanks and Best Wishes!

I think I’ll make a new one.
Glad to be of service, and my inbox is always open. soozievt/sdoncc, since you essentially have answered the questions before me anyway, you can do it officially now!

Just wondering for any New Studio on Broadway Musical Theatre students - how are the acting classes? How many are you taking per semester? What types? Are you learning a variety of techniques? What about voice/speech/movement classes? Thanks!

Greeting!

I was wondering what my chances of getting into NYU/Tisch MT program were if I transferred from a different school. I did rather poor in high school, with a low GPA of 2.3, and very low ACT score. I am currently finishing my senior year of high school. I plan on doing a year at Columbia College Chicago, and then transferring somewhere. If I did really well on my first year/semester of college do you think I can get in? My vocal coach constantly rants about how I should be in one of these top schools, annd I agree 100%, it’s just my high school grades that is holding me back. I would really like some advice as to what I should do.

For current students - I will be attending next year for New Studio MT! Can’t wait! What is the degree offering? BFA Acting with Musical Theatre Concentration? BFA Musical Theatre? thanks!

All of Tisch’s studios confer a BFA in Drama degree…this includes acting or MT studios. This was true even when the MT studio was CAP21 and not NSB. On a resume, one would list NYU/Tisch BFA in Drama and often the name of the studios where they studied. Anyone in the biz will know that CAP21 or NSB for MT is MT training (and of course, you would list your voice, acting, and dance training too).

Thank you so much!

I am so confused by these STUDIOS? So you apply, but not to a specific studio, then you are assigned one after you are accepted? It appears there is more than one for MT? I have looked at their website but am still confused. Would you want one over the other? Why? Is one where the “better” students are admitted and another for the next level? Cap 21, New School, what?!

When you apply and audition, there is no specific studio that you are applying to. However, IF you are applying for MT, you do a MT audition, as opposed to simply an acting audition. At the audition, there is a little interview, and you can express what studio is your first choice (obviously for a MT applicant who does a MT audition, their first choice is the MT studio) and mention a second choice (no guarantees of which ones you will be placed in, which happens about a week after the acceptance). However, you CAN specify at the audition that you will ONLY be willing to be in a certain studio, for example, the MT studio. But if you say that, and there is no room to place you in that studio, you will not be considered for any other studio. If you don’t state, “I will only accept X studio,” and they are very interested in you, and can’t place you in your first choice studio, they will accept you for a different studio. Saying that you will only accept X studio doesn’t increase your odds of getting that particular studio but simply, guarantees you won’t be placed in any other studio and if anything, decreases the odds of being admitted to Tisch as you are not going to be considered for any other studio.

Now, there is ONLY ONE MUSICAL THEATER STUDIO in NYU/Tisch. It is called New Studio on Broadway for Musical Theater. Your confusion likely lies in the fact that until this year, the MT studio for Tischies was CAP21 studio. NYU/Tisch’s contract with CAP21 for training its MT students is being phased out. Everyone currently in that studio will finish in that studio. Those admitted to Tisch for MT starting this past year (and from here on out) are in New Studio on Broadway. Right now, that studio ONLY has a freshmen class and next year it will have freshmen and sophomores and so forth, with a new class added each year. The other studios at Tisch are for ACTING, though some of these studios have singing and dancing as part of the curriculum and in fact, Playwrights Horizons Studio has a MT Practicum semester.

Also, after two years in your primary studio placement, there is an option to switch to another studio for the final two years (or even after three years in one studio), though it may require an audition to switch into a different studio. For example, my own daughter, who is a Tisch graduate, studied in CAP21 studio for MT (which is no longer an option, and now the MT studio for Tischies is NSB) for five semesters and then auditioned to do Experimental Theater Wing studio (ETW) for her final three semesters. When she originally auditioned to get into NYU/Tisch, she did the MT audition and said that CAP21 was her first choice studio but was willing to be placed in another studio (and figured in April could weigh her options, though it turned out she got placed in the MT studio, CAP21, as desired).

There are NO “levels” of studios. Again, New Studio on Broadway is the only studio for MT at Tisch in future admissions cycles, and CAP21 will not be an option for your child when she applies in the future.

If your child wants MT, she should do a MT audition, not an acting audition and specify that NSB is her first choice studio. If she feels that is the only acceptable studio for her, she could say she only wants to be considered for that studio, but if she says she is open to another placement if she doesn’t get chosen for NSB, there is still a chance of being admitted to Tisch for another studio and she can decide whether to attend at that point.

Hope this helps.

Wonderful! Thank you!
