is there wireless internet in the dorm rooms at stanford? if so, does stanford use 802.11g routers?

---there is wireless in every dorm except in Lagunita (and possibly a few others, but not the main ones you'd live in as a freshman). Lagunita "has" wireless, but its dorm funded, so basically that mean cheap routers that don't always work, and only some of Lag's dorms have their own wireless. most of the campus is wireless compatable, but not every single place. i'd say about 85% of stanford is wireless. they defintely need make sure its completely wireless by next year or i'm going to do some *****in. and yes it's compatible with 802.11g routers.

How hot are the girls? Be 100% truthful because i'm basing my college decision on this. I won't be able to visit until Admit Weekend so I need to know what to expect.

sarcasm i hope...but you are from Texas so i don't know...;P

um, there are many atractive girls, and many unattractive girls. same with guys. its not like everyone is ugly, but its not like everyone is gorgeous either. and the parties are ok. i answered this in the other thriad in the main Stanford forum.

my roommate is from TX too, and from what i hear, stanford girls are nothing compared to the girls at UT...but i'm from missouri, and the selection here isnt that good... so when i first got here i was like: "WHOAOOAOAOA hottness!!"

ok, here's the thing. you can't expect stanford, the ivies, mit, or any such caliber schools to have the hottest people. i mean, lets admit it, the brightest aren't always the hottest. ut has 30,000+ more students than stanford, and they aren't all there to get good grades, so yeah, there might be more good looking people for more than one reason. same goes for other schools. whatever, its a stupid subject, b/c all that counts is that i'm sexy and i go to stanford ;P

A couple more questions :). How many classes per quarter do people usually take? (I assume it would be less than a person in a semester system) Also, does anyone know anything about the Science, Technology and Society major?

The standard is 15 units per quarter to graduate in 4 years with 180 total. Classes usually range from 3 to 5 units each, so that's about 4 classes depending on the workload.

Most liberal arts classes are 5 units, like psychology, sociology, economics, etc., as well as freshmen lab sciences and foreign languages. EE classes used to be 4 units, but they restructured the curriculum and added so many more classes that the only way they could fit everything in 180 units (on paper anyway) was to cut them to 3 units. More work for less credit, what a great idea. You can browse the course bulletin for more information: http://bulletin.stanford.edu.

I got another question.
So to graduate, u need at least 180 units. Computer science major requires a minimum of 95 units. So that means
Computer science + General Education Requirements Classes + Electives of my choice = 180 units or more right?

Is it possible to learn rock guitar on campus? Does it cost extra or is it included in the tuition fee?

Do you know if Computer Science guys have to take Chem courses? I've gone through the SOE UGHB and it certainly doesn't seem so.

Also, about laptops, should I purchase it from Stanford? Are there special discounts for students?

don't know for sure, but i would venture to say yes...somewhere, somehow.

no, you can use it to complete a requirement, but its not necessary. http://cs.stanford.edu/Degrees/undergrad/Thinking.shtml go to completeing cs major and you can see the requirements for the major

def don't buy from the bookstore. way to expensive. i know stanford has a sepcial dell offer, but even then, most companies have special student offers. i got my laptop through HP's online academic purchase program (APP). dell and others have the same thing. you have to wait until you have a school email address and student id #, which is what they use to make sure you're a student.

admit weekend...oh man. it was fun for me, and there's a lot to do. too much. everything from dept open houses, acappella shows, parties, cultural center informationals, fin aid help, speeches, free stuff, friendly students, and a whole bunch of other stuff. trust me, you'll be busy doing whats on the agenda and meeting future classmates...hopefully.

word of advice...admit weekend isn't THAT much fun for everyone. some freshmen in my class say that they almost didn't come because for some reason admit weekend didn't convince them stanford was right for them because it wasn't "as fun as i thought i would be". but now they tell me that admit weekend is just so busy, and people are being to attentive to you, that you can't get a complete feel for what it's really like. they love it now though.

so basically, some people didn't have as much fun admit weekend, but LOVE stanford now. some people LOVED admit weekend, and still LOVE stanford now. so lesson is...you'll LOVE stanford no matter what your experience during admit weekend.
