Current Student: Ask Questions!

@ wtreed2: you will do those (ie: PE, FWS, etc.) yourself during add/drop week. it’s the same as what any other freshman does if they DON’T have an adviser sign them up for classes.

how do parties work at cornell? be as detailed as possible :)

It’s certainly possible! Talk to a prof interested in China, such as Lisa Nishii, and ask if the prof has undergraduate research opportunities. If so, apply for an Undergraduate Academic Research Fellowship or Summer Research Fellowship; you can do this by talking to Prof. Marty Wells, or going to the Office of Student Services.
The research might be part of a semester or summer internship abroad. You may be able to get international programs funding. For example, Helen Yang ILR '07 got funding to take an internship at the Beijing field office of the International Labour Organisation, an agency of the United Nations. She used this experience as the basis for her honors thesis. You can check out her story here [Helen Yang ILR Credit Internship in Beijing](http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/international/HelenYang.html)

BigDwight- there are essentially 2 major types of parties at cornell. the first type is collegetown parties. these are held in collegetown obviously. during orientation week freshmen will flock in herds to collegetown parties. it’s fun (and pretty crowded) and you’ll get some free beer. it’s also a great way to bond with your floormates and buildingmates. most of these collegetown parties are at fraternity annexes. after august the amount of freshmen in collegetown will drop tremendously. this is because freshmen will be going to fraternity parties which are the 2nd major type of parties at cornell. basically on a given weekend (besides Homecoming weekend) there will be 2-8 parties at different fraternties. the parties are free and you’ll get served beer or wine for free. you can dance with your friends and drink and just have fun. they are CROWDED and SWEATY but some of my best cornell memories are from these parties. there will be drunken stories, fights, hookups, and sick kids. enjoy it all, i wish i was a freshman again.

so all the alcohol is free? that’s a lot different from how it was in high school. how do the frats afford it all?

did you have tickets to cornell hockey? how hard were tickets to get?

Hey, I’m interested in transferring to Cornell ILR.
Do you know what the minimum requirements are? (gpa, etc.)
Thanks a bunch!

Check their admissions website. There’s no such thing as guaranteed admission once you’re above a minimum requirement.

If you have any specific questions, we’d be happy to answer.

Good luck!

What are some good classes to take 1st semester freshman year as an elective?

I’m in ILR so I only get one class of electives, but my interests are:

English, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Government, Econ.

Any of the above would be great
I heard a lot of people recommend Psych 101…?

Sorry one more thing to add: The Health forms were due by June 14th and I’m sending mine out tomorrow, is this a big deal?

What health forms? I’m an incoming transfer student; not sure I heard anything about this. I got a health information packet the other day but it said that stuff wasn’t due until late August.

What gives?

I was referring to the Health History Form on this page:

https://forms.newstudents.cornell.edu/first-year/</a></p>

This is a first-year page though, so I’m not sure if transfers have to do it.

Roneal:

Why wouldn’t be 2 electives? There would be room wouldn’t there or does ILR not allow 2 electives?

Well they’re recommended schedule is:

ILR Colloquium (req)
Intro to Labor Law (req)
Intro to Organizational Behavior (req)
Micro Econ (req)
FWS (req)
Elective

I think that puts you somewhere around 15 or 16 credits, which is what most people have suggested is an adequate amount for first semester; obviously you could take more if you wanted.

Hey CU Grad  What careers are offered with a bachelor degree in health Science? Is a Physicians Assistant a possible career choice?

Roneal:

You do not take both labor history and organizational behavior first semester. Half do it first and the other half do the other, either labor or Org. behavior.

Ahh ic ic yeah I see it now.

The first time I was looking at:
[ILR Student Services: Summary of Curriculum Requirements](http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/studentservices/curriculum/requirements/summary.html)
that, but now I see where it says half and half. Thanks! =]

OB and HR are both pretty easy classes.

Thanks for the insight!

Hey CUgrad, are there any electives you would recommend for a freshman in ILR that you feel would be helpful later on?
