Hi everyone! I am currently a freshman Television Writing Production student at Chapman. If anyone has any general questions about the campus, admissions process, or the specific TV major I would be happy to help.
What is the TV prod major like and what is the acceptance rate? (I Applied ED to film production with a second choice of Tv writing and production with a 4.2 gap and 33 Act)
The acceptance rate for TWP is much higher than film production. I was actually in the same boat as you where I applied to Film Production first as well. As for the major itself I love it. It is not as structured as the film production major where you have to choose an emphasis like screenwriting or cinematography but that just gives you a lot more options to explore. Since I’m only a freshman I’ve only taken a couple film classes but I really enjoy my TV production class I’m in now. The class focuses more on live TV but I’m sure once you get to the upper level classes you can start deciding whether you want to do live vs narrative or production vs writing. Also your stats look amazing so I don’t think you’ll have any problem academically from there it is all up to what the admissions think of you creatively. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can answer any more questions.
One more question! Did chapman ask for you to also turn in a TV Prod application?
I was actually a special case where I originally applied for film production but then was denied. Then submitted an appeal and was admitted into the TV Production major so I never did a formal TV Prod application. Although for people who just apply as TV Prod as their first choice I believe they had to write an outline about a tv show centered around their family.
Hi! I was wondering how many people are admitted into the TWP program (I heard it was smaller than film production) and if that major is kind of like it’s own little social group? I applied EA and wanted to know what the dynamic was like and if it’s easy to meet people.
I would say around 40 people were admitted for TWP this year but I don’t know the exact number. The major is sort of like its own social group but not really. Since every freshmen in Dodge lives in the same dorm it is easier to make friends with people outside of the TWP major. Basically it is up to you who you want to be friends with and you definitely aren’t restricted in just being friends with people in the TWP major. As for meeting people it is fairly easy especially since you meet everyone in your major during orientation week and it also helps if you have a good roommate.
Thanks for offering to offer input!
Parent of a potential applicant here. Wondering how the vibe is at Chapman these days for deep-thinking introverts who have little interest in partying, sports or “hanging out” (basically all the stuff I went to college for!). I wouldn’t use the word “nerd” since he IS very polite, gracious and occasionally witty, but he definitely seeks intellectual stimulation and deep learning over everything else.
Best wishes to you!
Of course @JeanJeanie ! As for the vibe at Chapman I think it is definitely different for everyone and you can make your experience your own. I think there is definitely a certain niche for everyone and Chapman offers a lot of opportunities from various clubs to working on set to help students find activities they like. As for the intellectual side the professors are amazing and are all open to students using their office hours to discuss homework or just talk. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Thanks for offering your input! Another parent of a potential applicant here. Film prod is primary but S19 may be interested in storytelling in episodic form. I took a quick look at the courses.
Do you take any of the specific film production courses (cinematography, directing, editing, etc) or is TWP primarily writing centric with generic production?
What are the other differences between TWP and Film Prod?
Post #2 answers some of my questions. Still would like to hear more about the production side. Thanks!
@romns116 As for the the production side I’ve heard that Film Production is more production heavy since when you major in Film Production you pick an emphasis (Cinematography, Editing, Production Design) so you can pick an emphasis that is more narrowed in on production. As for the TWP major you are taught all the basic production skills but if you want to gain more in depth production it helps to start working on student sets. I can tell you this year I’m taking a TV Production class that I absolutely love. I hope this helps also just know that this is not the only opinion out there being a freshman my knowledge is certainly limited, but I’m happy to help in any way I can.
