Current Student at Phillips Andover Ask Me Questions!

Hey,

I've just recently discovered this site for high school prep admissions and honestly I wish that I had found it when I was applying to Andover. Anyway, since I'm on vacation, I have plenty of time so feel free potential applicants/ parents of applicants to ask me questions about the application process, high school life, or anything you would like.

I’m saying this as objectively as possible, and while you don’t have to believe it, assuming the veracity of my statement without corroborating it, and taking it for verbatim, what are my chances, as a applicant entering as a “Junior” (I know they use different terminology for sake of simplicity I’ll say Junior or 3rd year High schooler), with mediocre grades, all A’s in secular studies (I do dual curriculum of jewish religious subjects as well, with 10.5 hours of school every day),

I am self studying 11 AP’s, including Calculus BC, Physics B and Chemistry. I am also prepping for Math Olympiad, and doing numerous rigorous math courses online (AOPS- W.O.O.T.), and to be describe me, I am not a stickler for grades or meritocracy, I’d rather study and learn for altruistic pure intellectualism. I am both extremely mathematical but also humanistic, very savvy with technology, journalism, writing and a political junkie. I have won awards in debate, model congress, and doing Mock Trial in NY.

I am 100% deaf (now have cohlear implant) , but have worked hard through sweat and frustration to be the confident (arrogant  established public speaker that I am. I am an extremely original thinker, and it’s safe to say an original personality. I can be provocative and say things a teacher doesn’t want to hear, either about myself or about a subject. Essentially I’m a cross between a non conformist and a rebel, though i certainly can control myself if the system calls for discipline, especially if it’s rigorous and something I’d respect.

I’m not a trouble maker, in spite of what you read earlier, in fact I am often a leader and model when necessary. I have served on camp staff of the largest council owned scout camp in the nation, (camp size of Manhattan of NYC), and lead over 80 boys in various outdoor seminars.

So first of all, would Andover be a good fit for me? I am very enthusiastic about it, and would be absolutely beyond thrilled to get accepted, but a fit is also important.

For my interview should I be serious and only diligent in PR tone, or more colorful and free flowing with intelligent witty but snappy responses? A lot depends on my type of interviewer of course, analyzing his/her body language, MBTU personality type and political leanings.

I understand Andover can be very selective and is under no pressure to accept any candidate it remotely dislikes, as it has the cream of the crop, and a student like me with mid 90’s grades may not as be lucrative as a student with 100’s and a googolplexian awards.

I hope to convey a persona of genuineness, and that I am only interested in learning and their opportunities for sake of learning and not prestige or legacy.

I am a caucascian (spel is wrong) jewish teen, with russian and dutch parents, very healthy and natural looking. Any other info needed? or Maybe less? Lol ;D

First of all shu, you sound like an amazing kid. You have a sense of self-worth and determination that many people–including Andover kids–lack.

Second of all, not all PA kids had 100’s when they were in grade school. Albeit, I had 90’s an 100 here or there, I also had B’s. Most importantly Andover is looking for students that will fit. What it means to “fit” is somewhat elusive, and ultimately up to the Admission Office to decide. I had the pleasure of living with the Director of Financial Aid, Mr. Jim Ventre, who as an AdOff read my application. He told me that when he read my application and interview notes it seemed as if I belonged here (Andover), and I did. Yes, they do take academics and grades into consideration because this is a difficult school, especially academically. If they dont take grades, one of the few identifiers of your work ethic, into consideration then the AdOff cannot be completely sure that you could handle the workload doled out by Andover.

If you don’t get accepted, however, don’t allow that to bring you too down. Plenty of intelligent, diligent, students dont get into Andover. Although Andover does have its community in mind, it also a buisness/corporation/thing, and **** happens.

It is my opinion that Andover could be a good fit for everyone, but then again I falsely believe that everyone thinks like me–and although I know that to be false it’s a hard thought to actively comprehend.

I wish you luck in your application process and keep me posted I’m interested to find out. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions, and before you sell yourself definitely come to visit.

By the way I’m a current 4-year senior at Andover.

how hard is andover to get in as a PG. i am currently going to a bs in new england so would that be a hook? and what kind of sat score would you need

Is it easier or harder for me as a freshman to transfer from another prep school? My gpa is around 3.65, I’m taking an AP class as a freshman, and I’m in the top 25%. I am not in the top2% like I hear most applicants are. However I go to pretty slective school, with 1/3 getting admitted. Will this help me or hurt me?

Hey, I have a few questions for you.

 1. How hard is it to get in if I’m applying for junior year?
 2. How good is the music program?
 3. What do you do for fun?

also are you a boy or girl?

lol shushugah made laugh in her beginning lines. it’s the opposite of circumlocution. but it’s hilarious.

@shushugah i think you’re probably going to be the most unique student and having such a rigorous study program.

I think you should just get into college. Phillips Academy will waste your time
Do you REALLY need to go to PA? You’re taking 11 Ap courses already on self study. If you can keep on self-studying, then I don’t think you would really want to go on to Andover. Beside that, you’re a Junior right?

I’m a sophomore, and while I seriously wish I could attend college already, I feel my chances would be greatly reduced if i applied a year early, I’ll reconsider it during Junior year, but anyways I am going to try enjoy BS/HS when I can, and get a real footing in my studies particularly math and economics, before entering college. I wish to succeed in Olympiad (USAMO/MOSP/IMO<<<Yeah right)

Junior and Senior year, I do want to devote time to research, and more meaningful stuff than AP’s or regents, or even SAT’s, and right now prep school is a much better option than the HS I am in now, which has an intoxicating somewhat anti-intellectual environment, (I will stop here, because my ‘wonderful’ education institute looooves censoring and gossiping to other teachers about what their students honestly think of them)

Regardless your response is hope lifting and warmly regarded, and btw, I am a boy, Yoni is a girl’s name in Japanese and in Hinid…(In hindi it means Vulva, hence the famous “Yoni Massages”) but it’s also a jewish’s boy’s name. It’s shortened from Yonathan or the latinized version of Jonathan.

Circumlocution is my winning strategy on Examen De Espa

One question:

How are the bathrooms/showers?

Specifically how they are used? Publicly, within-dorm…?

is the swimming pool as cleasn as Hotchkiss’?

i just read an article about how Exeter was boring and how the kids do drugs and drink alchohol. That was a VERY brusque summary but, is Andover fun?

No, apparently both Exonians ans Phillipians have fun, particularly on their newspapers. Exonians like to complain how miserable they are to feel good about themselves while Phillipians like to make fun of Exonians on how nerdy they are so they can feel good about themselves. ;)

guys feel free to look a few comments above and respond if u can!! muchos gracias!!

hey, i have one question about andover. i’m thinking of applying as a junior. if i do apply, i’ll be applying for full financial aid. so i was just wondering, is it hard to fit in if you’re a FA student as in, you’re not very rich, just normal? i know it’s a prep school, and obviously most of the kids are very rich, but is it “preppy” in the sense that the very rich and elite separate themselves from the FA or less wealthy kids?

thanks x

Half of the students are on F/A, and I don’t think so, most of the kids there are just really awesome people, and every single andover kid I’ve met has just repeated and repteated through words and action how important the school takes character and being nice, even the principal emphasized that,

Since no one has addressed this yet. THe bathrooms are different in every dorm, although bathrooms tend to be similar in clusters; most of the abbot bathrooms are the same, most of the pine knoll bathrooms are the same, etc. I’ve lived in 4 different dorms and none of the bathrooms were similar. They all had showers, and toilets, and sinks, etc., but other than that a bathroom could have 4 showers or just one. As for the gym, there are two shower rooms and they’re communal, which means they are shaed by everyone without shower curtains or dividers.

I just found this thread at a very convenient time, considering I just posted one titled “Who gets accepted into Andover?”.

This will be my second time applying to Andover(this time as a repeat sophmore), and I truly hope my application is successful. I am currently at a boarding school that in many ways is great. There are great teachers etc., but I find a lack of stimulation in the students. Therefore there are not as many opportunities for learning as there are at Andover. I know that the staff would love to have more classes etc., but with a small endowment and an unmotivated student body(except for a few), it’s hard to make that possible.

Andover is the only school I am applying to because I feel it’s where I belong. I’ve been told I stand a better chance for college at my present school, due to the idea of standing out. However, that does not encourage me to stay. I want to be in a community where my peers are there for their enthusiasm in learning. I take a strong interest in Humanities, law, and people, but my peers seem to only be interested in SAT scores, and social life. I know that there are many applicants who feel the same way, and that is why it is hard to believe that I’d have the opportunity that I so long for.

Yeah standing out is good, but not if you’re going to be dragged and with boring kids, i have the EXACT same problem, I feel for you, :D

Are the girls hot
