Current Student @ AU... ready to answer Qs

What is AU's strongest major? I'm applying for poli sci, maybe IR. Anyone know how strong they are in these fields?

thefreshprince: Poli Sci and International Relations are American U's strongest areas, esp. given the school's location in DC. American has an entire school of International Studies. With the DC location, the internship oppportunities are priceless.

another chances thing

^^
I would say you have a really good chance

yeah you have an excellent chance in my opinion. i'm a freshman at AU by the way.

yea esp. with your act score. just make sure you send that because a 28 is the average and your gpa is good.

GPA- 3.85
ACT- 27

A lot of EC's and my courseload was based on Honors/AP classes.
What are my chances?

it depends... is your gpa weighted or unweighted...
i would recalculate it like american does, based on your core classes each year- english, history, math, science (each one being a 4 and dividing by 4) to see where your gpa really lies.

Nope, you're pretty much stuck with shared bathrooms freshmen year. Sophomore you can move into centennial which has 4 to a bathroom suites, but other than that, you're basically stuck. They're pretty strict with living on-campus freshmen year, but for the right price, the adminstration will do anything (i'm a sophomore)

First of all, I wanted to thank Alyssa for starting this thread...reading through it has been enormously helpful.

I applied to American University and, like the rest of the regular decision applicants, am waiting to hear back. In the meantime, I'll admit that I am rather nervous because American University is where I want to go to school. Period. I've applied to a couple other schools, one as a safety (where I was accepted) but I am hoping that I don't have to go to any of them. Anyways, I was just wondering if . . . to give me perhaps somewhat of an idea of what to expect in the spring . . . I could get an opinion on my chances of being admitted? I looked at the stats American University offers, but still am not sure.

GPA:
Weighted -- 4.something
Unweighted -- 3.9

Rank:
before last semester, it was
8/239

Not sure if it has changed or not.

AP Classes: Our school only offers to AP courses, AP US History and AP Government. I took both but our school doesn't really support taking the test, so no one (in the entire school...including myself) took the AP test.

Courses: Followed the Kansas Scholars college prep curriculum. Our school offers college now classes (based on a college curriculum) so I took all of those that were available. Additionally, this year I have been taking one college course per semester up at our county's community college.

ACT: 31

Activities:
National Honor Society (president)
Relay for Life (chair this year, committee member last year, participant the two years before)
Natural Helpers (community service organization)
Forensics
Student Council (4 years)
Sophomore Class Vice President
Interact (through Rotary International)

What do you think? My parents are not thrilled that my dream school is in D.C....(they want me to stay close by) but I've never been more excited about anything in my entire life. I visited D.C. for NYLC (for a week) and didn't want to leave. As soon as I learned about American University...I knew it was a perfect fit. So I'm nervous about not being accepted!

Thanks ;)

well... your grades are great, and it doesn't really matter than you haven't taken many APs cause they look at if you are taking the hardest classes in your school... an ACT of a 31 is great, have you taken the SAT tho?

I got in ED with a 25 act, 1160 sat, and basically a 4.54 weighted and a 3.9 unweighted... was taking 2 aps junior year, now i'm taking 4... but i'm no genius.

If you could I'd try to get involved more in some ec's... i must of have like 15 ec's that I was actively involved in... my essay was really good too. do u want to go there for like international service and what not? if so, i'd try to do some MUN stuff...

but i mean you should get in, but as always the admissions process is wierd... my friend who goes to uva now applied to AU had like a 2200 SAT gpa was great... and he didn't get in... let us know how it goes.

Well, I also do Youth Court (through the county DA office), the FED Challenge (6 of us were picked out of the junior and senior class to participate) and International Club. Those ARE all the activities my school has to offer, lol. I'm at school from about 6:45-5:30 every day, and then I have college classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Plus, NHS, Relay and volunteering through Natural Helpers takes up a gigantic chunk of my time.

Our school is very small (rural area), so we don't have a lot of options yet. Next year (of course, after I'm gone) their starting honors courses.

No, no ACT's because most colleges accept the ACT + writing, and in Kansas we don't ever talk about the SAT's. Not even sure where the test is offered, because the school doesn't support them? But their definitely isn't ever mention of the SAT's at school...guess its a midwest thing.

Actually, I want to major in Political Science and minor in the CLEG program. Not sure if American University allows double majors, but if so I would like to double major in psychology.

I liked my essay, but . . . I don't know. I definitely didn't like that you couldn't really format it with the online application. No indents, etc. Would have rather sent in a paper copy, but I wanted to do the online app.

Thanks ;)

wow... no SATs? that's all they ever talk about on the east coast haha.

but the ACT is fine cause American looks at either one it doesn't matter... you actually might even get some scholarship money, who knows...

i'm sure you will get in!

have you visited the school? if not i would, or just show a lot of interest in the school... they always like that. haha.

yeah i think you will get in your location may also help you

holy ***** juz applied RD i'm nervous! someone plz chance me!!

Hoping to get into School of Communications at AU

stats: American living in Canada, so i'm an international

Rank: top 10%
SAT: 590 Math 590 Reading (ughhh i'm not a morning person)

Resume stuff: Layout editor and reporter for school newspaper
DJ and technician for school radio station
Editor of School Yearbook
Public Relations manager for environmental club
Was on honor roll for gr. 11
Interned at a newspaper at University of Toronto
200 hours of community service at a rehab clinic
95 hours of community service at a seniors home
Played piano since i was five yrs. old, almost certified to teach

Plz be honest!!!! THanks everyone and good luck if u applied!!

hey crazyhazel what state from the east coast are you from?

I think B407 has a decent shot (though far from guaranteed) because of his stellar EC's, especially since most relate to the School of Communication and AU's a sucker for community service. (balances his less than stellar grades) The high ranking and international standing also helps a bit. (I'm an AU student)

Virginia.

And I was wondering... does AU have any british guys?

I have a few questions for anyone who knows the answers/

How there hott guys at AU?

Is this a selective school... could i get in with a 3.0 uw gpa?

I want to major in psychology or something in liberal arts...so would AU be a good choice with those majors?

Are there a lot of internships positions there and is there a study aboard program?

How is the campus appearance and social life.

what kinds of shops are near by?

AU does have british guys, well, I know one. As far as guy selection, there isn't much, if you're looking for tons of hott guys AU isn't the best school for you haha, but there are a few.
