Current Student @ AU... ready to answer Qs

...in case you guys didn't get the drift... i was joking about that. The greek system is very open and diverse here at AU. This means that u don't have to be a bottled blond to 2 go greek.

...2nd of all... i'm the one who goes here... and with first hand knowlege i can assure you that the women at AU are beyond amazing and beutiful :)

...also (srry) yes interships are stressed here at AU. We don't have class on wed (or usually you don't) becuase wed is internship day. It gives people a chance to go out into the real world, and see what its really like. Its impt that people take advantage of this as well becuase you might as well go to your state college, out in the middle of nowhere.

Again i'm not an expert, just a mere first year student, but yeah going 2 a school like AU looks great if you want to go 2 grad school. Also AU has a grad school (law) which one may want to take advantage of as well.

Isn't AU's nickname the Gay Jew? Is this a true portrayl or just a negative stereotype?

...does AU ONLY accecpt people who are gay and jewish? no. Does AU have more people who are Gay and jewish then an uber cathloic school like Sacred Heart? yes... its a nick name... take it @ face value.

DC, esp areas such as Adams Morgan are very gay oriented. DC is also a very liberal and diverse area, so it attracts the minorities to come and study here.

If you have a problem with minorities, such as Jews & gays, then i wouldn't reccoemend coming here. If you are open to diverse and interesting people, who are gay, jewish, chineese, bi, african, etc... then AU is a good place for people like you.

I am not averse at all to minorities or homosexuals. I've just heard that nickname being thrown around a lot and I wanted to see what a current student such as yourself thought of it.

Do you know anything about the American U. Washington Mentorship Program? It seems my daughter was accepted to that campus (Tenlytown campus) for the fall semester, and admitted to the regular AU campus for the spring.

I need to know how AU is for a biology major. Anyone know? Thx

Hi there!

I got accepted to American University but my mom is really anal/scared/paranoid about me going there. I'm from California and I applied because I heard it has a good journalism/communications program. What kind of internships are available to journalism majors? What kind of job offers are given to those who graduate from AU?

Also, I wanted to know about the environment in AU. How safe is it in the area that AU is in DC? Can you compare that area to somewhere in California (just for reassurance with my mom)? I mean, would you compare it to Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, etc? And finally, if I decide to go to AU, what housing places do you suggest I look into? I'm not much of a party girl, but I don't want to be far from them either. =)

Thanks bunches. XD I have too many questions.

DC is located in the "safe" area of DC.... think normal burbs.... like we are far from like "sketch" dc... like south east... AU is safe... coming from a very sheltered enviornment, i have had no problem adjusting.

...again in terms of questions regarding special programs and majors that is not my own i really don't have that much info on it. The packets will have more info. Like i had a friend who is a bio major... she seems 2 like it... another friend of mine just transfered from the tent campus, and enjoyed it a lot... but i don't really have background knowlege on these types of thinsg

anyone know when you rush if you want to join a sorority at AU? like is it fall or spring freshman year?

for frosh it starts in the spring (ie: only transfers and sophs and above are aloud to rush in the fall)

ok thanks awesome...i was worried it was in the fall and it would all be at once and stuff

....one can rush w/e is best for them (as long as they are at least a 2nd semster frosh) .. there is a girl in my rush class who was a 2nd semster soph (and not a transfer)

the cut off ends 2nd semster of ones soph year. (for most of them i believe)

What is Leonard Hall like? I may choose that as my first choice for halls. Also, what hall would be considered the most "social" hall?

i heard if u want social go to letts or anderson...thats where i'm going to apply for.

Alyssa:
not that i'm basing my decision on this haha but how are the guys there?

guys... well... they are here.... with like a 60/40 split... its harder 2 find guys... plus with the whole gay thing... yet again i've had no prob hooking up w/ guys on campus ;-)

Leonard = multicultural hall. If you want somewhat of a social life... go letts or anderson. You want a social life... but not a CRAZY one... go Letts.

The prob w/ n.side is that there are so many more people on the s. side of campus, and the "LA quad" which sits between cent/ and & the letts hall is RIGHT THERE. You wanna go 2 a party, people get rides for them there. From n. side u have 2 walk all the way across campus, which is a pain.

lol what do you mean by crazy?

I asked this on another post but I tohught I may as well ask here: Are freshman allowed to have a car on campus? They were inquiring on whether I wanted a parking permit for the 06-07 year so I'm rather confused.

no frosh are NOT aloud to have a car on campus.

...CRAZY means like it sounds.... there are a lot more greek people, party people, loud people (loud in general, like they play lpud music) in and. again this is because there are more poeple in and then letts... but yeah and is crazy... letts is fun... and i luv it (hense why we're squatting... Letts 522 baby) but not as crazy or loud as and is.
