An academic peer would be a school of like or similar academic reputation.

For example among National Universities the Ivies would be "academic peers" with non Ivies Cal Tech, MIT, Duke, Stanford, UChicago and a limited number of others being "academic peers" with the Ivies.

Among the liberal arts colleges Williams [http://www.williams.edu],
Amherst [http://www.amherst.edu], Swarthmore [http://www.swarthmore.edu], Wellesley [http://www.wellesley.edu], Middlebury [http://www.middlebury.edu], Wesleyan University (CT) [http://www.wesleyan.edu, & Bowdoin College [http://www.bowdoin.edu] and one or two others would generally be considered to be "academic peers".

URichmond is generally classified as a liberal arts college. Although URichmond is a very good and solid academic school, as evidenced by its #34 by US News & World Report it would not generally considered to be an academic peer of Williams, Amherst etc. [Compare URichmond's 50%+/- acceptance rate to Williams @19%, Amherst also @ 19%, Swarthmore @ 22%, Middlebury @24% etc. and compare the number of accepted students that actually enroll at these elite schools much much higher than the 25%+/- ratio of students that are accepted for admissions that ever enroll at URichmond.]

Few if any students that attend Williams, Amherst and others elites because they did not get accepted or could not have been accepted at URichmond.

To confirm this point, US News provides a "peer assessment" score as a separate listing in its rankings of each school. The "peer assessment" is computed by US News according to how college officials rank or evaluate the academics of other like schools (ie. what Deans at schools think of other schools)

URichmond's "peer assessment" in US News is a solid 3.5 which is ahead of the great majority of other liberal arts colleges in the country. URichmond's "peer assessment" as reported by US News is however one point behind SewaneeUniversity of the South [http://www.sewanee.edu] that has a 3.6, Holy Cross [http://www.holycross.edu] is also ahead of URichmond at 3.6, Kenyon College [http://www.kenyon.edu] at 3.7, Trinity College [http://www.trincoll.edu] at 3.7, Bucknell [at http://www.bucknell.edu] 3.8. on up to the Williams & Amherst's at 4.7.

Those with the same US News "peer assessment" as URichmond all also being at 3.5 include Connecticut College [http://www.conncoll.edu], Franklin and Marshall College [http://www.fandm.edu], Rhodes College (TN) [http://www.rhodes.edu] , Sarah Lawrence College (NY) [http://www.sarahlawrence.edu] , Pitzer College (CA) [http://www.pitzer.edu] , St. Olaf College (MN) [http://www.stolaf.edu], Earlham College (IN) [http://www.earlham.edu].

URichmond would be academic peers with Connecticut College, Union College, SewaneeUniversity of the South, and like solid but not elite liberal arts colleges.

I hope that this information is of assistance to you.

Good luck.
