Current student can answer questions

Maybe someone will answer the questions if there in this thread:

I've read that Richmond puts more emphasis on the SAT II's than the actual SAT I. Is this true? I hope not cause my II's are really bad.

And in terms of financial aid... I really dont think I would get that much if any at all (cost is still an issue though), but i've read that their financial aid is among the best in the country and almost all students get $10,000 a year from the start.

Thanks (xx13xx)

Re SAT II's: according to the Richmond website,
The University of Richmond's standardized test requirement may be met in either of the following ways:

The SAT-I with Writing (the new SAT)
or
The old SAT-I and two SAT-II Subject Tests in Writing and Math (level IC or IIC)
or
The ACT (American College Test).
Since Richmond only requires the SAT II's if you're submitting the old SAT, I doubt that they'd put more emphasis on the II's.

XX13XX-- I'm curious-- How was the mood on campus during the recent elections? Were students involved? Did there seem to be more Webb or Allen people, or was it a non- issue ???

First, fpmid07...Chedva was right in regards to your SAT question, and yes the fin aid is very good here, the give a lot and to many people so I'd give it a shot.

marylandgirl...I know both the young democrats and college republicans got involved making calls, putting up signs, etc. It wasn't over the top like people yelling at each other, but there was a definite political atmosphere leading up to the election especially with the amendment to ban gay marriage in Virginia on the ballot. I think for the most part though people here were more interested in spreading their message to people outside of the campus since most students here aren't from VA and couldn't vote for the VA elections. In reguards to support for Webb/Allen I didn't feel like there was a greater amount of support for ethier side. Both had core groups of supporters and then there were the people who didn't really care. You would definitely get a more conservative vibe from this campus, but really its pretty equal its just most colleges are totally liberal so it makes ours seem more conservative than it really is. Anything else you need to know I'd be more than happy to help.

This has all been really helpful, thanks! Is it very difficult to get to the campus from the closest major airport?

nope if you have a car its like 15 minutes and can be done pretty easily, you can also take a cab and they run shuttles there before most breaks i believe

Do you know of anyone who has gotten in with everything going for her BUT SATs? Stellar ECs, recs, GPA, but lowish SAT of 1830? Thanks.

do you think ive got a chance for the full tuition scholarship

thx for your response

Would it even be worth it if I applied to URICH early (dec. 15) to apply for that full tutition and other scholarships if my SATs are low. They aren't the best and I probably am not going to get it. I thought that I might as well try but will I make a bad impression if i don't exactly "qualify" for the scholarship but apply to it anyways?

URICH would be a reach school for me. Is it worth trying?

Is it also true that it is harder to get into URICH from a different state?
I'm from Boston.

Richmond is a private university, not a public one, so what state you're from is irrelevant.

Okay lets see...

I think you still have a good shot with an 1830 if everything else in your app is good.

iscmatt i think you have a very good chance at getting a full tuition scholarship or at least a lot of money, I'd check out the different scholarships because some have a focus like an emphasis on community service or the sciences, or arts.

I don't think you'd make a bad impression at all if you applied even if you don't think you qualify, they give away a lot of money here so you might end up getting something, worth a shot.

And it is a private university so it isn't really harder to get in from out of state, that being said i know they are trying to attract more students from within Virginia so you might have an advantage instate, however it wouldn't hurt you coming from out of state as there aren't a ton of Virginia kids who apply here or enough to create a gap between how hard it would be to come from instate versus out of state.

xx13xx,

Im very interested in Richmond and it is definitely in my top 3 choices. I'm kind of reluctant about applying ED though (financial reasons). What would you say about my chances for regular decision?

private school in New York
3.5 gpa (w/ many honors and A.P.'s)
1890 SAT (580 CR, 650 M, 660 W), Bad SAT II's (610 Math I, 500 US History)

Varsity Track and Cross Country all 4 years (I've contacted the coach)
100+ hours of community service including Habitat for Humanity (tennessee), christian service trip to Ecuador, etc...

and much more...

Am I in range? High Match?/ Reach?

What is URICH good in? Any great programs or majors?

URichmond is a solid liberal arts college.

URichmond is ranked #34 by US News & World Report. Its academic peers are: #30 Lafayette College (PA), #30 Trinity College (CT), #32 Kenyon College (OH) #32 College of the Holy Cross (MA), #34 Sewanee—University of the South (TN)#36 Bard College (NY), #39 Union College (NY), 39 Connecticut College and others.

Approximately one half of URichmond applicants are offered admission (47% for overall acceptance rate & 55% early decision applicants).

Approximately seventy five percent (75%) of applicants accepted at URichmond elect to attend another school which indicates that it is seen by most accepted students as a "safety school" (2,743 accepted but only 772 enrolled).

What does an academic peer mean?
Like sharing libraries?

An academic peer would be a school of like or similar academic reputation.

For example among National Universities the Ivies would be "academic peers" with non Ivies Cal Tech, MIT, Duke, Stanford, UChicago and a limited number of others being "academic peers" with the Ivies.

Among the liberal arts colleges Williams [http://www.williams.edu],
Amherst [http://www.amherst.edu], Swarthmore [http://www.swarthmore.edu], Wellesley [http://www.wellesley.edu], Middlebury [http://www.middlebury.edu], Wesleyan University (CT) [http://www.wesleyan.edu, & Bowdoin College [http://www.bowdoin.edu] and one or two others would generally be considered to be "academic peers".

URichmond is generally classified as a liberal arts college. Although URichmond is a very good and solid academic school, as evidenced by its #34 by US News & World Report it would not generally considered to be an academic peer of Williams, Amherst etc. [Compare URichmond's 50%+/- acceptance rate to Williams @19%, Amherst also @ 19%, Swarthmore @ 22%, Middlebury @24% etc. and compare the number of accepted students that actually enroll at these elite schools much much higher than the 25%+/- ratio of students that are accepted for admissions that ever enroll at URichmond.]

Few if any students that attend Williams, Amherst and others elites because they did not get accepted or could not have been accepted at URichmond.

To confirm this point, US News provides a "peer assessment" score as a separate listing in its rankings of each school. The "peer assessment" is computed by US News according to how college officials rank or evaluate the academics of other like schools (ie. what Deans at schools think of other schools)

URichmond's "peer assessment" in US News is a solid 3.5 which is ahead of the great majority of other liberal arts colleges in the country. URichmond's "peer assessment" as reported by US News is however one point behind Sewanee—University of the South [http://www.sewanee.edu] that has a 3.6, Holy Cross [http://www.holycross.edu] is also ahead of URichmond at 3.6, Kenyon College [http://www.kenyon.edu] at 3.7, Trinity College [http://www.trincoll.edu] at 3.7, Bucknell [at http://www.bucknell.edu] 3.8. on up to the Williams & Amherst's at 4.7.

Those with the same US News "peer assessment" as URichmond all also being at 3.5 include Connecticut College [http://www.conncoll.edu], Franklin and Marshall College [http://www.fandm.edu], Rhodes College (TN) [http://www.rhodes.edu] , Sarah Lawrence College (NY) [http://www.sarahlawrence.edu] , Pitzer College (CA) [http://www.pitzer.edu] , St. Olaf College (MN) [http://www.stolaf.edu], Earlham College (IN) [http://www.earlham.edu].

URichmond would be academic peers with Connecticut College, Union College, Sewanee—University of the South, and like solid but not elite liberal arts colleges.

I hope that this information is of assistance to you.

Good luck.

fpmid07, i think you are a match and have a pretty good chance even with regular admission as long as eveything goes well with your senior year grades and essay and all. Good luck with all your apps.

bond, first personally I'd say we have a pretty solid poli sci department because that's what I'm in. My profs this semester have been great also we have a lo of alumni in Wash D.c. so we have a really cool summer internships programs there. Also, because Richmond is the capital of Virginia there are even more opportunities here. But, really what I'd say we're most well known for is our Business school which Business Week ranked #25 in the country for undergrad. It's unique to have a business school at a liberal arts college and it's a pretty good resource. We also have an established leadership school that was one of the first of its kind.

Oh and if any of you haven't heard we have a new president for next year he was a former dean at UVA and he's supposed to be amazing you can read more about him on the Richmond website.

i applied early decision to richmond, is there a way to find out if i got in before the letter comes? do you know if it will come on december 15th or afterwards?

I'm from Alabama and I think I'm one of the few to be interested in Richmond at my high school. I was hoping that someone could give me a rough estimate of when Richmond Scholars Semi-finalists will be notified. The website says that if you dont get it, they dont tell you. That kinda sucks, so I didnt wanna wait on something that isnt gonna come. I didnt know if we would know in february or later since the interviews are tentatively in March.

Also, what kind of chance do you think I have for the Scholars award with these stats:
