I am the mom of a first-year with an upcoming birthday. What do you know about the class of 2011's birthday cake service? This must be new this year, so I would like to know if you have partaken and was it delicious. I would like to get a cake for her hall and friends to share, and I am interested to know the best option for MHC delivery. Also, is this a good idea, or will it be embarrassing to my D?

I am asking because S was embarrassed when I did such things for him. I don't want to repeat this cluelessness if I can help it.

O.K....I'm a parent, not a student, but last year I sent a much appreciated birthday cake from Atkins Farms. I got rave reviews from my daughter. As a bonus, the folks at Atkins were delightful to work with....I called, rather than order through the internet so I could customize & be sure what I was getting.

Thank you for the suggestion, icesk8mom. The Atkins Farms cakes look wonderful. I received an answer from the organizer of the MHC Birthday Cake service, and she said that the cakes are made by the dining services. It looks like a fundraiser for the sophomore class. I will find out if people like the dining services cakes, and if the answer is yes, we will support the class. If no, it's Atkins Farms! Thanks again!

I'm a current mount holyoke student and I would definitely recommend using Atkins Farm. The cakes from there are delicious and reasonably priced.

The Dining Services cakes are good and they seem to be a little more reliable than Atkins Farms. Also, Atkins Farms can be really expensive for delivery for packages, even though we're right down the street (they're next to Hampshire), so that's something to keep in mind.

As to whether it's embarrassing, I would just say that it might "out" your daughter as one of the students whose parents can afford special things like this, and sometimes that can be seen as rubbing it in other people's faces since most students don't get cakes or care packages sent. It can sometimes come across as the student being spoiled, so I would strongly suggest checking with your daughter first to see if she's settled into a social circle where class is a big issue. (Sometimes students, especially firsties, are shy about sharing their social class if they're from the upper tier.) If not, then definitely go for it.
