^^if you have a mac, use shakespeer <–same network and hub, just a different program
its super easy to set up, but remember, it wont work until you get up there

UPA91-
- is there any way to get around the 10 gig a month limit? i watch a lot of shows so i need to download/hulu them
- See what everyone said above about DC++. Also, streaming (such as Hulu) counts againist your 10GB limit per month. Each extra GB is only $1.50 though.

2) what big fast food chains are located in collegetown/ other parts of ithaca?
Not many which makes Collegetown and Ithaca great. Most of the places in Ithaca are mom-and-pop shops and aren’t chains. But anyway, in Collegetown there is Subway and Starbucks. If you drive up Dryden you will find a Burger King about 5 minutes away from Collegetown. There is a McDonalds by the mall and an Arbys, Friendly’s, and Wendy’s in the actual mall. There is a Taco Bell and Moe’s by Wegman’s. Hope that helps.

this may be a stupid question, but can you use BRBs at the subway?

no 10characters

hmm the mall no longer has a wendy’s…

is the burger king still open on dryden? i thought it closed…or was that kfc?

i disagree about fast foods making things better…it just lets the mom and pops raise their prices…

Sometimes true. But lower prices can drive those “mom and pops” out of business. Which is sad, sad, sad.

yeah, KFC is closed i tried going with a couple of friends after getting the munchies and omg… SUCH DISAPPOINTMENT.

Will I ever end up needing a suit during my freshman year if I’m not a business major or in a frat?

Some clubs may require a suit if you go to a competition or do a presentation. I know in some of my non-business classes it was nice to at least be semi-formal for a presentation. It may also be good to have in case you do a job/internship/research interview.

If anything just make sure you have a pair of dress shoes or loafers, khakis and a blazer. I wouldn’t go out and spend a lot of money on a suit if you aren’t sure if you’ll need it. As a guy its always good to have 1 suit and a blazer/pants combo… you never know if you’ll need it for wedding, funeral, class, non-frat affiliated formals, fraternities, etc etc.

Is there anywhere you can check how much space you have used in regards to the 10gb internet rule? I don’t want to accidentally overrun it by too much and get charged a bunch of money.

Also, I live in a suburb of Cleveland and I am a huge Cavaliers fan. (I’m also expecting to get ripped on a lot from people saying Lebron will leave Cleveland for NYC in 2010). Because there’s the 10 gb internet rule, and I’m not going to be having my own television, I was wondering is there other places you can watch tv on? When I visited Cornell, at some of the dorms I saw, there was like a “common room” on each floor with like a tv and other things that people on the floor could use for free?

I was just wondering does that apply for every dorm? Is there like a tv on each floor (i’m in dickson)? And does it have cable? I figure I could watch the locally broadcasted games on the internet but if I could, I would like to watch the nationally broadcasted games on tv.

Do a lot of people go running? If so, where and when do they go running? Also, forgive me if this is a stupid question, but are all the gyms free? Or where do most people go to work out? I just want to keep in shape so I don’t become fat in college with all the food, stress, partying, etc.

Thanks a lot.

oh and does online gaming count against the 10 gb internet rule thing? Figured I might be gaming some online once starcraft 2 comes out if it ever comes out.

In regards to Intramural flag football- can women play?

yes, there is a website you can check your internet usage at. You will get more information when you move in.

Yes, there is a common area in the middle of each dickson hall (dickson is split into left wing and right wing and in the middle there is a common room with a foosball table and a couch and tv)

A lot of people do go running, because of the beautiful scenery. The gyms are not free. A full year’s pass is 145 dollars, a full semester is 90. With a gym pass also comes access to the group fitness classes. There are 2 gyms on north campus, 1 on west campus and 1 on central campus.

Yes, online gaming counts towards the 10GB limit. Anything that requires upload or download from outside of the Cornell Network is counted against your monthly 10GB. Trust me, it’s hard to go past it, and if you are serious about it, you will be willing to pay the $1.50 every extra GB costs.

If you are taking a PE class that uses the gym, the class fee covers the gym membership fee i believe

The main way people will ever reach the 10GB limit is if they torrent. The network usage counts uploads as well, so when you torrent, you can routinely share packets of hundreds of gigs in a month. Otherwise, online tv shows, movie, and games shouldn’t get you more than a couple of gigs over the limit. A few dollars out of the tens of thousands you pay in tuition is really nothing and I’m sure your parents aren’t going to notice it in the bursar bill.

Girls can definitely play intramural flag football, there’s a specific co-ed league for almost every sport…women’s rights ftw…

Heh, I would invest in a suit eventually, especially if you’re not growing anymore. You’re going to need one when you start job interviews, so looking around for good deals now can’t hurt.

wouldn’t it be possible to pass the 10gb limit by finding a wifi hotspot somewhere in collegetown and downloading from there?

except a lot of places in collegetown only allow you to go online for 15 min at a time, and you must wait 45 min between going online. coughstella’scough

My daughter is studying abroad this semester where we have to buy every KB at her university, and she is not able to use Skype or many IM via the university’s network. I had to buy her a wireless broadband. The maximum is 5 GB/mon for $35. Below is what 5 GB could get you. She misses all the perks at Cornell.

Activity/Download File Size X*

Sorry if this is hard to read.

rftennis09- your best bet for downloading stuff is from DC++. I haven’t used DC++ in 3 years (you can’t use it when you live off campus). But from what I remember most new popular TV shows would be on DC++ within 2-3days. DC++ is great because it doesn’t go against your 10GB limit. In regards to wireless, using Red Rover (Cornell wireless) goes against your 10GB limit. They just put this policy in place 2 years ago. There isn’t really any free wifi around campus or in collegetown.

ananya77041- I think its always good to have a suit. If you’re a hotelie you’ll probably need a suit obviously. Also, who knows if you’ll end up pledging a fraternity. Moreover, even if you don’t join a fraternity, a girl may still ask you to be her date to one of her formals.

Will simply a shirt and tie be too underdressed for a formal? From my experience people take their blazers off very quickly anyway.

Do dorm rooms come with ethernet cables, or do we have to bring them? Should we bring a lamp for our desk, or do they have them (specifically asking about Jameson hall)?
