Current Student: Questions before O week? Ask!

Will simply a shirt and tie be too underdressed for a formal? From my experience people take their blazers off very quickly anyway.

Do dorm rooms come with ethernet cables, or do we have to bring them? Should we bring a lamp for our desk, or do they have them (specifically asking about Jameson hall)?

The dorms have ethernet cables and desk lamps. I would invest in a suit since you never know what sort of activity you might get involved in which occasionally requires dressing up. A shirt and tie would be underdressed for a formal.

So, would it be okay if we don’t have a suit for the first semester (I’m taking Intro to Micro, Marketing, Green World, Calc, FWS, and am considering pledging, when are formals?)? Or should I really try to find a way to snag one before I head up?

You probably won’t need a suit until second semester. If you join a fraternity you’ll probably have 1 or 2 formals and maybe get invited to another 1-2 sorority formals. From my experience at Cornell it is best to have 1 navy blue blazer, one pair of khakis, a few button down shirts, a few ties, and a suit. If you have all of those they should last year all 4 years for formals, date nights, interviews, meetings, and other special events.
