Current Student Taking Questions

I’m going to bump this post for those accepted with questions.

My son and I were thrilled that he was accepted. Now we have to wait to see if he is offered any merit aid. (He won’t qualify for fin. aid.) Does anyone know when this type of info is sent out?
Thanks!

Same question? How generous are they with aid?

Hi, I am an international student so I am not eligible for financial aid. Is it easy to get scholarship in Brandeis, can I pay for my first year then apply for scholarship in second year? Thank you!

@tomphn, here’s a question for you: my daughter is interested in improv comedy. She has prior experience. On other campuses she’s visited she was told it is very difficult to get into any of the troupes. What is the competition like at Brandeis? If Improv isn’t available, is the theater scene similarly so competitive that interested students who may not be Broadway bound are routinely shut out of participating?

@Insanemom and @Shulamit

I believe that you still need to fill out CSS/FAFSA to qualify for merit aid. Last year Brandeis gave out 8 million in merit-based financial aid. Brandeis is very generous with need-based aid.

I think international scholarships are given out before entering freshmen year. Here is a list of International Scholarships: [Scholarships and Fellowships | Financial Info | Undergraduate Admissions | Brandeis University](<a href=“Scholarships and Fellowships | Affordability | Undergraduate Admissions | Brandeis University”>Scholarships and Fellowships | Affordability | Undergraduate Admissions | Brandeis University)

It is difficult to get into a troupe but most people that audition don’t have any prior improv experience so she will have an edge. I believe for most troupes on campus they take 1-3 people a year depending on the year. About 20-30 people audition for the year per improv group. Luckily there are 4 improv groups on campus so there are several opportunities to try out and you can always audition again in coming years.

Theater can be competitive but there are a lot of productions going on within a given semester. I believe about 6-10 undergraduate and 3-4 graduate student (undergraduates can audition for these) productions/plays/musicals are put on a semester from various theater groups on campus. The semester musical is always open for anyone to join within the ensemble but for roles students will still have to audition.

What do you think is the biggest drawback to Brandeis?

Hi am a newly admitted student to Brandeis. Currently, I am in a full-time dual enrollment program at Florida International University, completing over 60 college credits at the same time as completing my high school diploma. i wanted to know what the transfer credit policy is for Brandeis. If they do transfer credit from other institutions(taken while in high school), do they have a limit on how many credits transfer? In other words, can I graduate earlier because of my transfer credit?

are there any kitchens available for students in the residences? thanks

Thank you:)

I’m an international student with dual citizen ship to both Israel and the U.S and got admitted for the fall 2013 year. Does anyone know about the Alumni and Friends scholarship, apparently I am being awarded this scholarship but am afraid it does not cover tuition fees, room&board, exc…

My son and I are curious about Leader Scholar program for freshman. I know some of the admitted students were invited to apply. Is it invitation only or can anyone apply? I’d appreciate any information you might have!

Yeah the leader scholarship is invitational only.

Is brandeis mainly jewish students? Like would you feel out of place if you arent jewish???

@Ashux11
Brandeis is only slightly higher in percentage of students of Jewish faith as compared with other similar institutions. Furthermore, another very small percentage are actually orthodox. So no, you will not feel out of place because as a whole, the campus is an incredibly open and accepting place. It’s ultimately how you feel on campus that matters!

I guess I didn’t do well on the writing assessment and I was put into Composition…Is that class something I should be worried about in terms of workload?

Nah, its just to make sure that you can handle the workload in the future. Brandies academics are rigorous and without a strong foundation in writing it would be too difficult. Good luck moving in!

People, I need to get an idea how hard it is to get Wien International Scholarship!!!

I’m an int’l student from China currently attending a high school in Dallas. Grades, test scores, ECs are all fine, but nothing big like Intel ISEF or IMO…

Current receivers, would you mind sharing with me your status when you applied?

Hi, I have some questions regarding the premedical program at Brandeis.

 1. How prevalent is the “weeder” culture there, that is are proffs in the intro chem/bio courses impersonal “F” manufacturers?
 2. How competitive are premed students, in other words, are kids cutthroat eg: refusing to assist others, or is it just that everyone works really hard all the time? (totes OK with latter)
 3. I’ve heard horror stories regarding the premed advising comittee, specifically regarding how they tend to discourage students who aren’t “sure-thing” med school applicants, is this a true assertion or merely talk?

Thanks

I just received an email from Jean Langill on today at 4:00 p.m. and it states some ambiguous things that could potentially excite me. The main sentences that stood out to me were “Dear Christopher, Welcome to Brandeis University! We look forward to working with you over the course of the next few years. Now that you are a matriculated student, we must finalize your financial aid award.” This shocks me because I haven’t even completed my application yet. Does this mean that i am accepted?
