Current Student taking questions :)

Hey peeps,

I will be answering any question that i think i know about FSU and life on campus. Ask away :)

This is just a specific question that you might not be able to answer.

My priority number was 588. Do you think I can make it into Landis Hall and get a single dorm?

AND. How's the foodz?

hilsa, I heard it's reallyyyy tough to get single rooms in landis. There are only a couple per floor (5 floors), and usually upperclassmen get them, since we have housing priority over you. I don't think I've ever heard of a freshman in a single =/

I'm currently in landis (in a triple), so I usually eat at Suwannee, though I've gone to Fresh Food many times. Suwannee and Fresh have a good selection of food, but it gets old after a while. There are certain "stations" and they make different meals, but overall the same kind of food. There are definitely good days and bad days. Also, I think that fresh food usually has better breakfasts, while Suwannee has a better vegan station. That's just my personal opinion, though. People who live on the west side of campus, who eat at Fresh every day think that Fresh is superior to Suwannee.

If you don't want the dining halls, though, there are tons of other choices. The Trading Post is like a little convenience store which sells bread, milk, chips, dry good, etc. That's in the Union, along with a Hardee's, a sushi place, a Pollo Tropical, Chili's, Quizno's, a smoothie place, and an Einstein Bagels. Over on the far east side of campus is also a Circle K and Panchero's. Plus, right on Tennessee street, about a 5/10 minute walk from landis, is a Subway, Mcdonalds, another smoothie place, Sunberrys (frozen yogurt), Pitaria, Jennys Lunchbox, and The Loop. The places on tennessee don't take flex bucks, but everything else on campus does.

hope this helps!

The only reason I wanted a single was because I don't want an obnoxious roommate. But since you're in a triple... does it even matter? aka: Are honors kids normally less obnoxious anyway and naturally won't be bothersome? I just need like 10 hours of sleep a day and I can't really have people ruining that.

Oh good, I'll have some options. That's all I needed.

Thanks!

how hard is it for students to find internships, jobs, or get accepted into a work-study program?

Sweet. Thanks for taking the time for this.

I got into FSU in December, and it's one of my top choices. But I do have one concern... It seems like all there is to do in Tally is party, and I'm not a big party guy. I mean, I would love going to football games and an occasional party, but I would rather have other social options. It seems like Tally is just way behind in that area compared to other cities with schools on my top list (Minneapolis and Boulder, for instance). Could a non-partier (and non-drinker) have a good social life at FSU?

Thanks again!

it's really up to fate, regarding with whom you get paired. (technically, you have close priority numbers.) i know girls (and guys) who are in doubles and triples with really amazing people, who are similar to them, and with whom they get along great. On the other hand, I've heard a few stories where people get really weird, awful roommates. That doesn't happen that often, though. Almost everybody wants their room situation to work out, so with whomever you get paired with, just talk a lot and get to know her (i'm assuming you're a girl?) and agree on some ground rules. You're going to have to fill out an official roommate agreement anyway, after the first couple weeks.

And I don't think the honors dorm is different from any other. It's a little quieter, but all the kids aren't geeks, believe me. We certainly know how to party :] Wherever you get put, there's going to be a mix of people and personalities.

About the 10 hours of sleep, GOOD LUCK. Landis is pretty quiet, which makes napping easy, but still.

If you want anymore info, just let me know! :]

I have anemia that just won't go away. So I'm way more tired than normal people and so I NEED more sleep.

My friend has the priority number right before me. So maybe we'll be roommates, which will be cool.

AT9 - I don't drink either. Not my thing. And I'll party every so often, but I'd rather just sleep or go see an independent movie. And I'm sure they'll be more people like us there.

while youll be in the minority at FSU, youll fit right in and noone will give you any crap about not wanting to party or drink. for instance, its thursday night, almost everybody is out and about, im in my dorm writing an english paper. do i party? yes. do i drink? yes. but im being responsible and acknowledging that tonight i have other priorities. Landis is pretty quiet, only time u might have a hard time is weekends.

i agree with kauffman. i've gone to a few parties, and i drink occasionally, and yes, i'm the minority. however, there are definitely activities in which you can get involved. the slc has free movies almost every night (some indie, some popular), and clubs are alwaysss having activities somewhere. plus there's IM sports, club sports, and other people just like you who would rather sit around and play apples to apples on a weeknight (or weekend!). you'll find a group of people with whom you fit in fine :]

SATSCHOLAR - are you from Florida? did you have friends from HS you hang out with or did you make a new group of friends? I assume your a strong student how are you enjoying your classes ? are they large?

Real talk: I currently live in Landis and I don't mind it. The kids here are mixed. There are definitely more socially awkward kids here than in other dorms, but the good side is that you're more likely to get a civilized roommate. No offense to my school, but in other dorms you'll often find yourself asking "how did they get in here?" or "why does it smell like pot in the hallway?" In Landis - at least - people are usually reasonably intelligent (emphasis on reasonably) and you'll fine a few who really are high achievers.

The truth is that parents get a completely skewed perspective of what's up. Your kids aren't telling you that what they're actually doing at 12 am is getting high at the parking garage. Even in the honors dorm, I can say a MAJORITY of the kids in my hallway smoke pot frequently... both the normal, nice kids and the weirdos. It is what it is. Fortunately you don't have to be a part of it. One of my roommates is a total straight edge, good boy and he probably has a lot more friends than I do. There are a lot of things available to do, but it's inevitable that you'll be in contact with people who participate in activities you're not down with.

Amazing...things haven't changed in 30 years. I thought they only did stuff like that back in the day. ;) We never trusted anyone over 30...which seems like eons ago now.

Just wait until you see one of those kids you wondered about (How the heck did THEY get in here??!) become your boss in the real world. They may not be so whatever as you think.

Study hard, have fun and...the police will still arrest students for underage drinking and smoking pot. Not a good thing to have to explain later. Saying "I was young and stupid when I was young and stupid" is not a good thing to tell a prospective employer or a med school interviewer. There is far less tolerance for such things now, and the databases are much better.

johnnytremain, may i ask what floor you're on? i'm in landis too, and j/w.

parent2noles....lol, i see time repeats itself and things hardly every change.

as for the image of the students, of course your kids arent telling you that theyre out at 2am on a weeknight smoking pot or doing whatever. not because youll get them in trouble, because they dont want to hear the b*tching. i def. believe kids in landis smoke pot. the majority of the pot smokers i knwo will grow up to be somebodys boss one day, theyre brains, in high school almost all of the top 10% smoked pot. i guess it has to do with stress and pot being a way to get away but well never know.

Honestly, I worry about you kids having TOO much stress too soon sometimes. Human beings are error-prone and need some time for rest, recreation and learning (which can be quite difficult). My father (a WWII combat vet, career teacher, high school principal and county administrator) used to tell me " I never let school work interfere with my college education". Timeless advice.

Get all your work done, strive for excellence always, but rest, eat and have some (lawful) fun. ;) Make us alumni proud.

If for some reason I am chosen to give a speech at graduation, I will use that quote

I wouldn't worry too much about the roommate issue, most of the people I know get along well with their roommates/suitemates. I turned out to be really good friends with mine. You can always switch if it turns out horribly.

I'm living in Gilchrist, which is pretty nice. I haven't had any problems, and the people are generally friendly. I don't think it's very social however. I wish I knew more people, and I find it sort of hard to meet new people around here.

In response to the drinking/marijuana use, I'd estimate ~60% of students have smoked pot recently, and ~90% have drank recently. They have this stupid thing all around campus that says "Did you know that as many as 22% of FSU students didn't drink the last time they partied!?!", which is really dumb if you think that maybe 1/5 can't because they are DD, and the other 2% maybe don't drink for medical reasons etc..

Anyway, I go out maybe 1-2 times a month, study, do some clubs and IM, and hang out with my friends and still have a 3.75. If you stay on top of your work, it's really not that difficult.

agreed 100% with ryuzaki. Drug use is pretty prevalent, but not a big issue at all. Tonsss of my most intelligent friends drink and smoke pot, and it doesn't affect their schoolwork (we're all in honors, with at least 3.5 gpa's).

I'm on the 3rd floor.
