Current students: 5 things you love and 5 you hate about Georgetown!

Hey guys! I'm a newly admitted student to the class of 2017. I'm super excited about the possibility of attending this fall as Georgetown is one of my top choice schools but still trying to weigh out a better financial aid package from Vanderbilt.

I'm curious to know of just a couple of things current students like/dislike about the school - things I won't really find on the website or brochures. Thanks!

Top 5 likes, but in no particular order

Big name speakers coming to campus

Philosophy and theology requirements

Internship opportunities

Healy Hall

Many very seriously smart people here

Top 5 dislikes, in no particular order

 • Subpar economics department (but it is improving)
 • Subpar mathematics department (tech/science in general)
 • Some people take themselves way too seriously here
 • I visited my friend at Harvard recently and his classmates made my classmates look like high schoolers in terms of intellectual engagement.
 • Our crappy endowment means less money for student activities

@MathEcon13 I was just accepted to Gtown for Computer Science. I have the option to attend another school that is nationally renowned (# 14 in US and #15 in world) for Computer Science. I also want to minor in Economics. How bad are the programs?

Thanks in advance and sorry to interrupt the topic of the thread!

MathEcon13,

How would you rate the International Economics Major at Georgetown? I have been admitted to the Qatar Campus, but I have heard that, contrary to popular belief, same degrees are offered at both campuses. So, I’d love to here you views about the Intl. Econ major at SFS.

Thanks!

@tmmycar – Probably I should mention that I’m speaking from a viewpoint of a student who eventually plans on attending a PhD program in economics, so for me there’s a heavy reliance on how well-ranked our PhD program is and how well-known our faculty is. So when I say “subpar” I mean something along the lines of, Georgetown is a top-25 institution but the economics department is not. However, from most people’s viewpoints the economics program is great preparation for consulting, finance, etc. As far as compsci goes, I think there’s probably twenty undergraduates per class in it. I can’t really speak to the quality of instruction or job outcomes of that department, though. I do know that it’s small, and if it was a better department it’d probably be bigger.

@junaid123: No idea about the Qatar campus. I do know that the int’l economics major is a standard economics major but requires a few extra classes and a thesis. But, I don’t know any of the instructors at the Qatar campus.

@MathEcon what do you mean by “more intellectually engaged” when referring to Harvard students? could you be more detailed by what you mean and maybe specific examples of how this manifests itself among the students?
