Current students: Four or five classes?

I have to write down the classes I want on my registration card by tomorrow, and I’m unsure about whether I should take four or five classes. As of now, I have four sure classes I want to take, and two of them I want to take pass/fail. So is this the standard thing at Brown, two pass/fail classes and two grade classes? Or do people take five classes or less pass/fail classes? I have to keep in mind that I plan to work (on campus perhaps), work out, read, and have a life. I’m not certain how difficult Brown classes are and if five would be too much. Thanks.

I'd take four classes your first semester, one S/NC if you want.

personally, i took five classes almost every semester, but that's the beauty of brown. you can do whatever you want.

i'd check out the critical review--they have pretty acurate description of how much work per week each class requires outside of lecture. understanding that you could work less by making certain classes pass/fail, figure out how many hours you want to study per week

I think most freshmen do the four per semester and at least one S/NC in their first semester. To take 5, you need your advisors' signature.

"To take 5, you need your advisors' signature."

Well, only to the degree that you need your advisors' signature to add/drop courses anyway.

I thought there was an extra hoop involved. Though, I could be wrong.

There are so many appealling classes and my interests are so diverse that I am vveeerrrrryy tempted to take 5 classes. However, I think I will force myself to narrow it down to 4 because: a) Id rather produce high quality work in fewer classes than lesser quality in a greater quantity of classes, and b) there are sooooooo many other things that will be claiming the energy of us freshman, from academics, to social acclimation , to living independently, to finding extracurriculars, to several other things...dont wanna spread yourself too thin...just my 2 cents...=)

Sign up for 5 and then drop the one you like the least.

amor - my thinking exactly.

I'm signed up for 5 and i'll drop the one that I like the least. If after a month i feel that I can keep up with 5 courses, i'll just keep taking all five.

I don't know if this is just a fluke and far from normal, but I was looking at facebook and found two people (happened to be PLMEers in the class of 08) who were taking six classes in their second semester of freshman year. And they didn't seem like gut classes either...so is that possible? Six courses while still maintaining a life?

I doubt it. Maybe they put up 6 they were thinking about during shopping period and forgot to take one down. Or maybe one was a half credit class, or an independant study lab, or something weird. I don't even know if you're allowed to do 6 classes.

You aren't... Unless they are not full credits.

yeah, you are only allowed to get credit for five. you can have a sixth on your transcript if you audit, or you can take a non-credit instructional class

You gave me the idea, Pete. Thanks.

(i'm Kevin from myspace)

Actually, I don't think you can even technically audit a sixth, but let me know if I'm wrong.

I'm signed up for 5 with the intention of dropping 1 as well. Though, I didn't list any alternates. Did anyone else do the same? I'm somewhat nervous about that. not that nervous though... :)

You'll be changing it alot anyway.

I know kids on facebook who have five/six/seven courses, but those are just courses that they are interested in and are not necesarily taking.
