current students, impressions of new classes thus far...

i figured i might as well get some current-student bantor going.

So, how are your new classes? Easy/Hard? Rate how easy on a scale of 1-10 (10 meaning an easy fluff class, 5 being difficult with significant work required, 1 being horribly hard to a level of near insanity).

i'll start:

ILR LE240 - (labor economics) so far so good, seems like it'd be easy to get lost if you dont keep up. Book was written by two Cornell profs. Three prelims, three quizes and a final paper constitute the grade. Easy scale: 6.

ILR OB171 - (macro organizational behavior) interesting class with broad topics about organizational behavior. Taught by two professors (both highly regarded) ... one is present for lecture and the other is on video-conference from ilr's NYC extention office. Both are fantastic lecturers. Only downside (possibly) ... grade is 45% from midterm, 45% from final, and 10% participation. Little room for error. Easy scale: 8.

ENGL371 - literature of the outlaw. Fascinating class on an interesting topic. Have read some interesting stuff and some boring class thus far. The main topic of the class revolves around those who choose to act as if they were "outside" of the law. Two papers consitute most of the grade with the rest being in participation. Easy scale: 7

ASIAN277 - meditation in indian culture. My fluff class that I use to relax (literally). We go into the history of meditation in certain cultures, then attempt to practice what we just learned. So far, it's been alot of fun! Teacher is very enthusiastic and loves doing his job. Easy scale: 9

ILR CB201 - Labor and Employment Law. This is one of those classes that is really hard to form a concrete opinion on. Teacher (Michael Gold) is fantastic, very very smart, and has a nice sense of humor. Having said that, he has very high expectations for his students. His homework assignments (alot of case studies) are extremely long, extremely difficult and require an incredible amount of critical thinking. The average grade on one of the assignment we just completed was 28.6 out of 83 (i scored a 75, *****es). Each class requires at least 5-8 hours of homework (3 classes per week), plus pop quizzes given often. So far, i've enjoyed the challenge but it's not for the faint of heart. Either you love it or you hate it. Looks to be my best class so far. Easy scale: 2

Now i know there's plenty of other Cornell students on the board (sparticus, spanks, norcalguy ... a bunch others), lets see what you all have to share!

CS312 - seems easy so far, just have to adjust to a really different style of programming than C/Java/etc

CS280 - not too conceptually difficult, though it seems to cover a decent amount of material that I don't have a lot of experience with (i.e. set theory, etc). I haven't yet seen the first problem set, so I don't know how hard of a class it will be.

SOC215 - Haven't been to a lecture yet, I can't imagine its too hard though, especially given how easy my last soc class was.

PHYS 214 - seems to be decently difficult, I'm switching to Chem 208 since its basically the easy stuff from AP Chem and I can sub it in for PHYS 214

Math 293 - seems easy enough so far, though I've heard diff eq can be challenging.

Light load as usual.

English 364-really like the prof. really like the book we're reading so far (catch-22). should be a fun class although this is the class i'm most worried about grade-wise. i haven't written a literary essay since freshman year. lots of english majors in the class

History 152-eh. ok class. fun section discussions. should be my slack off class this sem.

BioBM432-tortuous esp. at 8:40 in the morning but doesn't seem to be tremondously difficult (reminds me a lot of biochem)

BioBM440-super nice prof. great lab partner. good amount of work for a lab course (but it is 4-credits). Two 4 hour labs a week combined with the fact my research prof decided to schedule my lab hours in the mornings on the same day, I have to spend 7+ straight hours in lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Not too many prelims. A lot of papers to write.

(yes, i realize my entire post consists of sentence fragments and uncapitalized "i's")

Govt 161 - Not too interested in philosophy, so it is kinda boring, but the professor is great (Hendrix is the man)

History 276 - Haven't attended class b/c it hasn't even started yet (next week, the professor went on vacation)
-saw the syllabus, seems good

Writing Seminar (Eng 187)- SOS, not too fond of these seminars

Span 123 - seems like an easy A, but who knows

Math 111 - seems alrite, an A- maybe?

Got lazy so I'm only taking 16 credits...all core engineering classes.

Math 293 (Diff EQ)- so far pretty easy, but the lecturer is really bad. I expect its gonna suck for that reason.

Math 294 (Linear Algebra)- I actually enjoy this class and one of the lecturers is really articulate and explains things really well.

Physics 213- Should be pretty easy A...professor is excellent from what the 112 students have been saying. Homeworks harder than I would've thought but still very managable.

CS 100M- Almost a fluff class...that's required.
