Current Students: Some Questions for Admitted Students

For those of you who were admitted early decision in years past, can anyone tell me when to expect to receive my acceptance packet, like housing forms, my @vanderbilt.edu email address, etc? Do we get anything after the inital deposit is received or must we wait until April?

Also, is the spring orientation program worth applying for? I understand it is limited attendance but I don't really know anything else about it.

I also have some questions about college credit... I know Vandy only gives up to 18 credits for AP tests and externally earned credit but if I take AP tests beyond that can I use them to be placed in a higher level class freshman year?

Lastly, I am taking a dual-enrollment writing class in HS now from Syracuse University. It's Syracuse's standard freshman writing seminar. Do you think I will get to exempt out of Vandy's freshman writing seminar or at least get humanities credit for it? Syracuse claims that most colleges give 6 credits for it.

Thanks alot for your help, guys!

D was an ED admit. You will get a priority mail packet the last week in March when RD acceptances are mailed. You'll get instructions on setting up your webmail, applying for housing, meal plans, etc. Since there is no preference for ED admits for housing (there was when S was admitted in '02 I think), you are really good to go right now. The orientation programs are in June and July and are helpful in terms of getting to know people, get scheduling questions answered, and to get a feel for the campus. I know of several situations where people have met someone they would like to live with and they have been able to request those folks as roommates (or if they were placed in singles, as hallmates).

I went to the orientation thing last year, and I was pretty disappointed. It's fairly expensive in itself, and we also had to drive 9 hours and pay for a hotel (for my mom). The only real advantage is having a faculty adviser help you with scheduling. As far as AP tests, read the listings on the website carefully. Even if you get 5s, they might not actually count for anything. I got a 5 on AP Bio and I got credit for some lower biology course that bio majors don't even take. Because I was taking BSCI 110, I couldn't get credit for the lower course, so I got nothing for that AP test.

Silversparkles, which orientation program did you do? The DoreWay program which is like a week before move in isn't really interesting to me but the SAOP which is just 2 days in June looks cool.

I did the SAOP. If you are really interested in meeting people before school starts then it might be worth it, but it was basically a series of boring lectures.

I really liked SAOP -- it allowed me to meet lots of people before classes started.

bumpity bump

i'm going to need to bump this up.

My question is if I should bring my mom with me or I should go alone....Do a lot of kids have their parents with them? I don't want to be the only person alone.

It seemed like most kids did have parents there. There are certain points where you split and students go to one session and parents go to another
