So, I got on the wait list today, which isn't great, but isn't awful. I mean, thus far for the past five years, everyone on the list has gotten in eventually. Then, I got this email from housing telling me that there will be no way of me getting any housing. Then, an hour later, another email saying that it was good that I was on the wait list. What does all this mean? USChicka, did you get these emails. I copy and pasted the text of the first one below.

"As a result of unusually high demand for university student housing from our
Returning Resident Renewal (R3) participants and a lower than usual number
of cancellations, we regret to inform you we do not anticipate being able to
offer university housing this Fall to continuing students who did not
participate in the R3 process earlier this year. We anticipated greater
turnover among our current residents, however, due to the increased
popularity of university housing, this has not happened, nor does it appear
likely to occur.

We regret not being able to offer you housing. If circumstances change and
space becomes available before August 10, we will attempt to contact you to
offer you a housing assignment. If we have not been able to offer you an
assignment by August 10th, your application will be cancelled.

Listed below, for your reference, are a number of alternative housing
options (in the Los Angeles area) you may wish to explore. We hope you find
it useful."

I definitely don't remember getting that email, but of course there's a chance I am getting forgetful in my old age, and that I did. :) I just remember them telling me that people on the wait list always got housing if they wanted it. What did the email that you got after it say? Did they rebuke the first email, or just say something like, while you won't be getting housing, it's alright because of blah blah blah?

I wouldn't give up hope yet, because a lot of people trying to get into housing might cancel still, and open up spots. It sounds like you should look for other options, though, just in case, because that first email sounds kind of daunting.

Ouch Nikara, that does suck. I find it puzzling that they sent you that email already when they haven't even chosen RAs yet (whose housing spaces will open up) or people who might decide to cancel - they have until March 24 to do so.

Don't give up hope, I'm sure you'll get something.

There's a friend in my hall who's in the same situation.

On the other hand, I have another friend who got into on-campus university housing and is choosing to live with Conquest instead. It sounds like it's a nice option as well.

My mom is anti-conquest, not quite sure why. It would be a pain in the butt, because I want to study abroad next year, second semester. I'm going to ask a girl in our hall who works in the housing office what the email really means.

I'm guessing there are definitely some spaces that will open up; they haven't chosen RAs or HTAs yet, if those people are living on campus those spaces have to open up. I don't think I would give up hope just yet, but I think I would definitely explore other options too.
