Current Students?

are there any current students here that could answer questions some questions about student life and classes?

I'll second this.

I think cookiemonster and copper are current students. will you guys help us???

sure, what do you want to know?
...and i dont know how often copper comes on anymore, but ill let him know too

cookiemonster, will you tell me what there is to do in campus? I've been hearing all this bad stuff about how there's no socializing and nothing to do. Also, how's student body?

cookiemonster, what percentage of the undergrad population is Jewish, would you estimate?

there is plenty to do on campus. the frats and sororities are always doing something, whether its a party or 4 on 4 sports game, or a giant game of twister. emory brings in comedians and bands too, and theyre always really good. and theres the DUC down under with a pool table ad foosball but admittedly thats lacking. theres volleyball/tennis/raquetball (and the rest of the gym...) courts and clairmont with an outdoor pool during the day. i mean...theres definitely plenty to do on campus here, i cant say anything id want that emory doesnt have. what are you looking for?

the student body, i dont know how to answer that question...how is it? um big? social, nicer than i expected. lots of japs, wont lie, but theyre all very friendly. more diverse than i expected too. youll find people from all walks of life. every race, social class, whatever.

um, im mhorrible at estimating things like that. i mean it's known for its jews, and it seems like a lot of people are jewish. i dont know what youre looking for in terms of this answer however. if you want a big Jewish population, youll find it. if you dont want one, well most people are Jewish, but not hardcore.

Emory's Jewish population is between 25-30%.

what are japs?

Copper here, what are your questions?

does the greek scence dominate social life?

jewish american princesses

are greeks and non-greeks segregated

greeks and non greeks arent segregated bc you rush second semester, and a lot of people rush without pledging just to meet new people (both me and copper rushed without pledging)

thus, of course, greek life does not dominate. freshman yr, admittedly, a lot of social night life will be at frats simply bc most people wont have cars, but if frats arent your thing, it's not really a problem either. you are in a city after all...

how hard would u say the classes are?

this has been asked before im sure, but how dominant is self segregation at emory? Ive heard both cases- that it is very dominant & hard to make friends of diff race & also that it is largely over-exaggerated. id like to go somewhere where its not out of ordinary or uncommon or weird to have friends of diff race.

I'm indian and I'd be willing to make friends with anybody of any race.

Classes vary - some classes are a joke in how easy they are and others you can work four hours a day or more and pull off a meager B. You can pretty much manipulate which classes you take though. Self segregation is evident on campus but it's not the rule. I'm sure there are schools that have more of a united campus in terms of minorities, but it's not absolutely terrible here.

What benefits do you find at Emory that you don't think are in most other places?

How do you feel about the campus?

How do you feel about the profs?

What about Antlanta. Is that a good city?

What opportunities (internship, work) is there?

i chose emory bc of the research opportunities, yerkes (the primate center), the neuroscience major, proximity to a major city, the weather (of course), the fact that it's not really a southern school (no offense to southerners-i just mean i could never survive at a place like W&L where my sister went), the campus is beautiful and really easy to get around, i love emory village and how emory is a pedestrian campus so theres no roads running through it or anything, the gym is just ridiculous and since sports arent huge there arent any stupid jocks running around thinking they own the place...some of those are seen in other colleges, but to be honest, what other college has all of them?

see above

AMAZING. i adore every prof i had this year. theyre all so eager to help and genuinely want everyone to do well. despite big classes (well bigger than hs, i mean like 100ppl were in 2 of my classes this yr), they're so good at keeping things interesting and really paying attention to every person and willing to answer questions. they're all easily accessible outside the classroom. they're seriously just amazing.

atlanta's fun. i mean, im from ny, so im spoiled in terms of things to do, but as a city, yeah its a good place. it's much prettier/cleaner than ny definitely and theres an abundance of bars/clubs/museums/restaurants. i've eaten at a lot of cool places since ive been here that ive never seen before (dante's down the hatch was really awesome, so is tu tu tango). i actuallly just got back from the city. me and copper went to the CNN building and played in the elevator bc its glass and high and fun. maybe we're just easily amused. theres also a lot of long escalators. anyway, we also went to the westin and ate at the rotating bar at the top. it's the tallest hotel in the western hemisphere (or so they claim) at 73 stories--gorgeous view of the city. um...i went bowling last week and movies and whatnot. i mean, i guess it's a typical big city. only less pedestriany and not as blocky as ny, but cleaner

anything you want. seriously. so many pre med opportunities of course with all the hospitals in the area and the jimmy carter center sets aside a certain number of jobs for emory students only. i think kenneth cole is an emory graduate so he likes to help out students too (altho maybe thats a myth?). theres always career fairs and the career center helps a lot i hear.
