Hi all,
I'm thinking of applying to Rice as a transfer this fall. Could a current transfer student at RIce give some insight on how transfer-friendly Rice is? (housing situation, finding friends, getting a job/research on campus, etc.) Thank you!

I think you might have better success finding Transfers on FaceBook. I applied for transfer for Fall 2013 and I messaged random people on the FB page for the previous transfer classes and everyone happily responded.

Here are some of their answers to questions I had:

In terms of housing, it isn’t guaranteed for transfers, but they said that if many who were placed in Residential colleges without space were transferred to other colleges that did have space for them (ex. Duncan to McMurtry). One transfer student also said that many colleges are trying to make it so that all incoming transfers are guaranteed on-campus housing for their first year.

In terms of internships/jobs/research, it seems that Rice is really fantastic. They told me that many students go into consulting and I personally know that many Oil & Gas, finance, and consulting firms do recruit at Rice. I was looking through LinkedIn pages of Rice students and I saw that many even have research and internships during the school year, which you can probably attribute to the Houston location.

Friends-wise, the overwhelming response was that it is extremely easy to make friends as a transfer. O-week plus the RC system seems to really ease the transition. A couple of the students also said that once you are on campus, there is really no distinction between transfer students and those who got in as freshman. They all seemed to really enjoy their social lives at Rice.

Academically, the response was that it is quite collaborative and laid-back rather than cutthroat competitive. The college I am currently at is definitely a lot less collaborative so this is something I really am looking forward to if I get into Rice. They said classes are really small (even as small as 3-5 students, which is tiny for an Undergrad class!!!) and even the mid- and lower-level classes are quite small.

If you haven’t visited, that is the first thing I would do. I visited during January and the weather was perfect (60 degrees and sunny). The campus and the trees are really beautiful and the students all seemed really nice. Rice wasn’t my first choice before I visited, but after visiting it became my first choice by far.

I’m a sophomore transfer student who matriculated in Fall 2012 from Northeastern University. Feel free to respond or PM me any questions that you may have. When you say Fall 2013, do you mean to transfer this fall? The deadline has already passed…
