Current tufts students

I’m posting one last time to laugh at that last part.

^^Look, I understand that the disagreements that are expressed on this site can yield some “edginess” and controversy.
But to be frank, Lightbearer, that last paragraph was inappropriate. If you disagree with justthefacts’ criticism, you should say so, and you did. That’s fine.
But don’t demean yourself or others with some rude and puerile response. It’s unworthy.

Hello, Lightbearer - here are two of your quotes, copied and pasted. I haven’t looked for any others (don’t think I need to):

Lightbearer 05/19/09 8:23 am

I applied at the engineering school…even though Tufts isn’t exactly the best in engineering, I’m gonna go with mechanical engineering…and then possibly engineering management…

Lightbearer 05/19/09 9:42 am

Actually I didn’t get accepted to any other university in the U.S.( I’m guessing my full financial aid demand didn’t go down too well; I got $ 55000 from Tufts)…but I would have otherwise gone to the Indian Institute of Technology…it’s the most elite engineering institution in India ( better than all American colleges in engineering except for MIT )…but I need a base in America to aim for the ivies for my postgraduate in management…and check your email now…the letters come in pretty quickly!!!
Lightbearer is offline

By the way, nice choice of insults. I should have expected the same in criticizing the posts of an 18 or 19 year old kid. Sorry if I offended your sensibilities - I have the feeling you’re soon going to have your hands more than full as you aim for the ivies from your “base in America.” Good luck with your fellow Tufts mechanical engineering students.

Ameriprise, AXA, Northwestern Mutual, BoA, and JPMorgan recruit on campus during career fairs, etc. BlackRock and Choate Advisors have the stated goal of creating a pipeline.
Chris Cerrone would have a lot more information.

Every day, I learn/read something about Tufts that makes me so happy that our D is starting there this fall—except these endlessly whiny posts by skateboarder (I agree with others, just don’t enroll, there is no way you’re going to appreciate this opportunity)—and while I hadn’t noticed Lightbearer’s dissing of Tufts, I was truly offended by his remarks @ what he intended to do with the opportunity to move into the dorms early. On the other hand, Snarf is such an amazing asset to this forum—your advice is invaluable.

Why is everybody ganging up on skateboarder and lightbearer?

^^Maybe because, as John Houseman said in the old Smith Barney commercials, they EARNED it?

momiac, you’re too kind. Of course, my advice wouldn’t be “invaluable” if someone offered to pay me for it.

re: Lightbearer - I haven’t noticed him complaining about Tufts. (Not that it would be a horrific problem if he did - plenty of people have gripes about Tufts, and far be it from me to tell them that they shouldn’t.) He’s just been curious about how to make the most of his education. And maybe he’s bragged a little. Nothing particularly wrong with either of those things.

re: skateboarder - folks did really gang up on him. Sorry about that, I clearly incited it. I get a little frustrated when people say negative things about my school, especially if they’ve never been there, that’s certainly true. But. When I claim skateboarder shouldn’t go to Tufts, its really not out of spite. I’ve always believed, and I think my comments on this forum will back me up on this, that people should go to the school where they’ll be happiest, for lots of reasons: you’ll do better academically, you’ll network more successfully, you’ll make a better impression on your professors, you’ll make more friends, and, not to mention, four of the most important years of your life will be a lot better. So by cautioning skateboarder not to go to Tufts, I’m really not trying to be mean-spirited and exclusive, I’m trying (perhaps unsuccessfully, because I will admit to letting defensiveness and school pride cloud my ability to communicate) to get him to really think about whether Tufts would be the best place for him if he’s going into it with such a negative impression. People don’t succeed at schools where they’re not happy, and skateboarder clearly wants to succeed, and just as clearly is not anticipating being happy at Tufts. That’s fine; Tufts (just like any school) isn’t for everyone. If he would be happier at a different school, he should seriously consider going. That’s all. He’s not a bad person (as far as I know, anyway), and he’s not doing anything wrong by having doubts about Tufts.

So no. He didn’t “earn” being ganged up on, especially by parents, who should know better. He’s an 18 year old kid, scared and confused about his future, trying to figure out what he should be doing next. Don’t demonize him just because the best choice for you, or for your child, may not be the best choice for him.

i said id never post again, but oh well.

I’ve used this website as a way to vent. ive said this before.

I am happy with my decision 90% of the time. during that other 10% of the time, i come on here. its healthier than getting ticked off in real life.

I’m excited to start at tufts in 2 ish weeks.

snarf, you have been helpful. also, sorry to everyone. :)

Well that’s good; I’m glad to hear it.

And really, send Chris Cerrone an e-mail, he’ll be able to answer any finance-at-Tufts-related questions much better than I can.

Okay…let me answer all the criticism one by one…
Momiac… let’s just say that I was amazed that you were asking whether people who moved in early would grab all the good stuff…and my comment was made in sarcasm… I guess I find your apprehensions about the Tufts class of 2013 laughable…
Just the facts…‘isn’t the best’ isn’t exactly ‘denigrating’…is it ??.. and if I had been ‘crowing’ about how much FA I got, I wouldn’t have mentioned that I got rejected at all the other colleges in the same post… as you can see from the posts above, people here haven’t read posts from me ‘denigrating’ Tufts… your long and boring attack on me and skateboarder was unprovoked while we were discussing tomatoes…but I wouldn’t expect anything more from someone who’s been ‘reading posts from skateboarder and lightbearer since admissions decisions were announced’…no wonder per capita output’s going down…
And for all those people who have been saying that skateboarder should save his parent’s money by taking the year off…last day for paying the fall semester bill was August 3…

LB—please note that I did not post about moving in early or post anything else concerning apprehensions (in fact, this is only my sixth post altogether)—but I do read the board to glean information.

Snarf—spot on, as usual. Parents should not be ganging up on 18 year olds—this is a huge step and therefore often anxiety producing. So, I apologize to skateboarder, although my advice about not matriculating was sincere—I’ve known others who, probably wisely, decided at the last minute to take a gap year because the school they were headed to just didn’t seem right to them—no sense in wasting the money and, more importantly, a precious year. But, I’m glad that you’re back posting, and I hope that, if you do go, that you’ll be excited (and of course apprehensive—that’s only natural). My apologies again.

Uh hem- I’m the one who asked about roommates moving in early. On another forum here on CC there is a long thread about the rights of students who arrive first at dorm rooms. You’d be amazed (well, I was) at how many parents think it’s ok to do whatever they want. I posted about it here to get a sense of how Tufts people feel and as usual, they were full of common sense (well, mostly). I’ve never lived in dorms so what do I know? That’s why I ask dumb questions. Our plan is to stay out of it and let the roommates work it out- it’s not our dorm room, after all- it’s theirs.

As for being unsure and anxious- heck, I feel that way too. I imagine many parents do. Tufts was picked based on: gut instinct; one very short visit to the east coast; affordability (barely); reputation; the kinds of people met on this and other forums; and comparing it to other schools where D was admitted. Do we still have some doubts? yes. Is there anxiety and wishing we could be 100% sure? Absolutely. I imagine this is the case of many, many students about to leave home and many, many parents about to send their kids to college. Deep breaths everyone. Hopefully by the first week of September, we’ll all feel more sure of our decisions- in fact, I’m 99% sure of it :). Thanks to Snarf and Neethus1 and skateboarder and hebrewhammer and lightbearer, and everyone else, for all of your input these last few months, for this anxious parent to read and enjoy and ponder.

I for one cannot imagine why a person would want to do any injustice to a room mate who has every chance of becoming your best friend…and I’m sure all the other Tufts students feel that way too…so don’t worry…
On a side note… tell me that you did realize that I was being sarcastic when I spoke about the whole ‘wetting’ part…

I’m not sure I deserve thanks
apologies accepted though. And I hope mine are too
now why don’t we let this topic die so that this isn’t the first thing people see when they visit our forum. Tufts is my school now and i wouldn’t want to represent it poorly :)

Lightbearer: I do have a twenty-year old son, after all, (though not at Tufts). I do recognize male adolescent humour when I see it :)

Yes, after I had completed my last post, I wished that I had added, for students’ understanding, what an anxious time this is for parents, too, especially ones (like whm) who live so far away.

Anyway, let’s do move on. As I said in a previous post, almost every day I read/learn something about Tufts that continues to make me thrilled that our D is going there. Yesterday that something was President Bacow’s baccalaureate address (which I came across when I googled Jamie Dimon and Tufts after a friend told me he has known Dimon since college days): [Baccalaureate Address to the Class of 2009 - Office of the President - Tufts University](<a href=“Office of the President | Tufts University”>Office of the President | Tufts University) This President is so impressive. Go Jumbos!

Awwww! You ol’ softy.

Well, some people are just *******s.

Does this list of companies that visit campus seem similar to what you all have seen in the past (promise I’m asking this as a legitimate question hahaha)

[Tufts University - Career Services](http://careers.tufts.edu/students/careerfair.asp#employers)

Umm, yes those companies have come to campus, but those are just the companies that come to the Career Services-sponsored career fair. Most departments, and some student organizations, have their own, more particular career fairs. So, for instance, the engineering school has a separate fair for engineering firms, and the English department invites publishing companies and newspapers on campus, the Drama department in conjunction with 3Ps, the performing arts group, brings theater companies and producers to campus, the Economics department and Tufts Finance Group brings banking and finance firms to campus, etc.
