You will have to take the placement test. Remember that this test has to sort people with a pretty wide range of mathematical background - AB Calc - BC Calc - and beyond. There will be some parts you simply won't have the knowledge to do. However, I am guessing that a solid AB calc class might let you place into 151 or maybe 152 - certainly respectable.

I know for sure that if you get a 5 on the AP calc AB test it would give you credit for 15100 math, so it would seem silly that it wouldn't be good enough to place you into the class

Is the Honors Calc class a small class full of boys who would tease and torture me? Because that's my comfort zone...

is the social life at u of c really as bad as i keep hearing? i visited campus and really liked, more than northwestern, but i keep hearing that its kind of a crappy place to have a little fun? what about alcohol, the ultimate key to college?

Dude, there will be parties all over the place. All you have to do is be outgoing and proactive.

And I don't think anyone in honors calc will have the time to tease and torture you. You can get your guy friends to do that, butif honors is more of an analysis class, I think most people will be listening intently an be in a half-dazed state for most of the class.

Placement tests have their place, so to speak. My son didn't do particularly well on his AP Spanish exam back in high school, but when he took the Spanish placement exam during O-week at Chicago, he placed out of the language requirement. That gave him added flexibility in his schedule; he decided not to do more language study at Chicago.

Parties at UofC? Parties in Hyde Park? Just walk around certain parts of the neighborhood (anyone can tell you where) and listen (or watch the sidewalk), on weekends of course. Oh yea, keep a few fives in your wallet. It seems the going rate for a beer cup at an open party is five bucks.

Summer after her first year, D told me how many times she stayed up on a Saturday night watching dorm hallmates that had too much. I should add that the dorm staff is tolerant of bottles in the rooms. I saw a bunch myself when visiting.

Go to northwestern. The 'ultimate key to college' at the UofC is learning - not alcohol.

That's one of the reasons why I like Chicago: lack of parties.

Question: Swim test. What's the ideal time to pull on this? How long is it?

I don't think Chicago has a swim test.

uhh...yeah it does.

My mistake

i don't think it is a time requirement... i think all you need to do is to swim the 100yds, no matter how long it takes you

They have a swim test?! That's so nifty.

What about film studies at UChicago? What is the comparison to say, NU or USC or NYU? I know Mike Nichols went to UChicago, but that can't say everything.

yay for swim test/PE... i knew that mile swim would come in handy... oh wait, 100y<1mile -- DAMMIT

Yeah, we have a swim test. It is only a distance test, with not time limit, so you can just do elementary backstroke the entire time and it's still cool.
On partying at chicago. I know that i can find alcohol any weekend I'm at Chicago. Not everyone partakes, and not everyone parties till unconciousness. Instead, people generally drink and socialize or just socialize without drinking. The frats we have charge guys $5 to get in for as much as you want to drink, but at least one of the frats has ladies drink free. I've never been to a frat party, but if you're into that sorta thing, it could be fun. My partying is generally done in my house, where as long as you're not passed out and one the RA's have to take care of you, the housing people are cool. Of course, it's true, if you want to party, go to Northwestern. If you want to remember your college years as being fun and informative, go to the U of C.

astrobobocop,
Do you know anyone majoring in geophysical sciences? If so, have you heard anything about the department? My daughter (currently a junior) is interested in studying environmental geology and U Chicago is her first choice. Thanks.

Chicago has one of the top Geophysics departments in the world, the even have a large Geophysics Building. Here is a picture of the building"

Here is a description of current research.

"Sir Peter Crane accepts faculty appointment in Geophysical Sciences"

In my view, Peter Cranes appointment unequivocally establishes the University of Chicago as having no peers anywhere in the world in the fields of evolutionary paleobiology and the broader areas of evolutionary biology, Rowley said. His research is rooted in the long tradition of expanding our understanding of evolution through the discovery and careful description of fossils. He has dramatically expanded the influence of this tradition by initiating several revolutionary advances that have put him at the forefront of evolutionary biology.

The University of Chicago has the most influential group of evolutionary biologists and paleontologists anywhere in the world, Crane said. I look forward to working with them, and my other colleagues at the University and in the community.

yeah, i don't know anyone in the geophysical sciences, but idad seems to have found some great info on the department.

astro have you ever been to Improv Olympic?
