Current UCLA Regents Scholar - Ask Me Anything

I'm a current Regents and Alumni Scholar at UCLA. I also had a full ride to Cal and was an academic recruit to Cornell.

I'm back on this board after a long hiatus to answer any questions and will attempt to demystify the process for choosing the best schools.

A little bit about why I chose UCLA ... As I noted, I was accepted to Cornell. It was a dream come true and I was on my way. I was personally recruited by one of the dean of admissions when he called me and told me that they would like me to "join them" for the fall.

I also attended the Chancellor's Reception at Cal after being accepted. Two of my closest friends who were planning on attending Cal lobbied me hard to matriculate with them. We even rolled down 4.0 Hill together.

But this all changed when I first set foot on UCLA's campus. I'm not sure what it was, but I just new I had to go to UCLA. It was the best decision I have ever made. I'm quite logical and not prone to make decisions based on unexplainable emotions, but I'm incredibly glad I followed my heart.

My friends on the other hand hate Cal (Not joking) and wish they had attend UCLA with me. UCLA is like an academic Disneyland. The sun is always shining. I'm surround by incredibly attractive people who are also quite intelligent. Furthermore, UCLA, what with its sculpture garden, safety, and cleanliness is a joy for students.

Finally, in order to make my decision between Cal and UCLA, I took an informal poll of four friends. Two of them attended Cal and the other two UCLA undergrad and UCLA Law.

The consensus between my Cal friends was, "yeah ... I kinda like my Cal experience." My UCLA friends on the other hand raved about UCLA. One said, "I wish I was there right now." The other said, "I still dream of it at night."

I am intimately well-versed on the transfer process and not just UCLA academics, so please feel free to ask me anything and I will do my best to answer questions.

What major are you? Did you have trouble finding a job? How about your friends? Did they have trouble and what majors are they?

I’m a Communication Studies major and I have yet to look for a job as I’m still currently in school. None of my friends have had trouble finding a job. Though I’m not sure which friends you’re asking about.

do you think i can get in as an electrical engineering major with a 3.7 flat?
(sorry, shallow question :P)

also, how is the course load over there?

Ninja,

Anything is possible. UCLA cares about prerequisites more relative to Cal does. Cal really does have a more holistic review than any other UC.

Hello, I recently applied to UCLA as a transfer student from a local California community college and lately I’ve become increasingly nervous about whether or not I will be accepted! My GPA is a 3.96 and my major is English. I have completed 3 out of 5 major preparatory courses (English 1A, 1B, 2 years foreign language) and have finished my IGETC (+73 semester credits overall). I have also taken additional English courses; however, they aren’t applicable to be considered preparatory courses. In your opinion, what are my chances? I also really wanted to get a Regent Scholarship but unfortunately as a transfer student I would need a 4.0 and I am .04 points away from that (damn)…Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

Did your CAL friends provide any specific reasons for considering Cal only lukewarm? I’ve only ever been to UCLA’s Campus but what I’ve heard is that its one of the nicest campuses so I’m not sure how Berkeley would compare with it.

@tragicxeyes I visited Berkeley’s campus and attended the student-guided tour there earlier this month, and let me tell you…the place is absolutely breathtaking. Granted, the semester had not started yet, and the campus wasn’t bustling with students or any activity really. I’m not the type of person who really appreciates the arts, yet I found the architecture of every building on campus to be quite captivating; it truly lives up to it’s name as far as the campus goes. Cal is worth a look for anyone in my opinion. That’s how beautiful the place was. If you can’t find a way to visit the place, you should at least search youtube for videos of Cal’s campus (I’ve seen a few and some do a great job showing most of what you can see in person)

Ironically, I live in L.A. county, but haven’t really visited UCLA yet other than a brief visit to the auditorium where they hold musical performances and whatnot a while back. I plan to take a tour there sometime soon, so I’ll give you my comparisons when I do.

My son is being considered for a Regents scholarship to UCLA and it asks him for a recommender. Should he use a teacher or someone with whom he did research last summer? Thanks.

@lehcareiram Make sure you have finished all your prerequisites by Spring semester prior to transfer, or else your chances might be slim.

@janner Whomever he believes will give him the stronger (and more positive) recommendation.

To those wondering, I’m not just some random upstart. I actually attend UCLA, with a unit standing of a junior as a political science/philosophy double major. So if you have any questions regarding those particular majors feel free to ask.

I have some questions to ask. I wonder how many people actually got the regents scholarship? From the website, they said that 100 students. Is that the number of students actually accept the scholarship and attend UCLA? And the others got the scholarship but went to different schools? One more question, invitation for the regents does not mean you got accepted right? Because some people on CC said they got rejected even with the invitation. Thanks for your reply. I am very appreciated.

this is probably a dumb question, but what is Cal? Caltech?

[Let me google that for you](<a href=“LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You”>LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You)

First hit.

thanks…

I’m just playin’ with you :)

But yeah, Cal = Berkeley.

Hi eyethink, can you chance my child for a regent scholar? out of state junior, large public high school with over 4k students, 4.0 unweighted, 5.33 weighted which is max from all high honors and ap’s, 240 psat, 36 sat, will take sat next month. sits on a school service board, captain of a fall sport, volunteer during summer for a nonprofit helping inner city kids, perfect scores on national latin exams, first choice is stanford but that feels like a coin flip and loves the whole ucla experience (older sibiling attends ucla)
thanks

A UCLA comm major transfer!! I have been looking for you! I applied to UCLA as a comm major, it is absolutely my first choice. I had one semester at Santa Barbara CC back in 2004, leaving with a disappointing 3.0, however, upon returning to school in 2010 at Santa Monica College I have maintained a 4.0 ever since, combined I am at a 3.87. I know that the comm major is incredibly impacted and difficult to get into. I have finished all the prerequisites, even the ones not offered at SMC and will be done with my last class for IGETC this semester. Do I have any chance of getting in?? I would REALLY appreciate your feedback. Thank you in advance!
-Cara

PS
also applied to Cal as a Media Studies major

Does anyone know when will UCLA and Cal release the results of Regents Scholar for transfer students?
