Hi, I transferred to UCLA in Fall 2015. First I wanted to say best of luck to all current UC applicants.
My question:
In semester units, I completed and transferred 66 lower division units and 16 upper division units, but UCLA is still capping me at 70 units. Because of the upper division units, was I supposed to receive more than 70 units or in my case, all the 82 units?
I messaged one member here in the CC forum who said I should actually be receiving all the units; I was wondering if anyone else had different answers/opinions? On the side note, I have been speaking with one person in admissions who says the 70 unit cap might be a mistake so I am working on it.
The last college I completed coursework before entering UCLA was LACC (community college) but UCLA is viewing the last school attended as USC. I’m not completely sure on why but admissions said that it could be because it was at USC where I last completed a full time course load; I only took 6 units at LACC. I explain this because when I met with UCLA counselors about my unit situation, they disregard USC as the last school attended and say because the last school I took coursework was at a community college, they cap me at 70 units. The counselors said the last school where you took coursework has to be a 4-year university in order to receive more than 70 units.
Really confusing, but I just wanted to know anyone’s thought on this?
in the end it doesn’t matter what people out here think, the UC people get to interpret the rules. That said, it does sound like upper division credit should not be capped
What does your DAR say? I think you can petition the upper division transferred classes for equivalent UCLA upper division courses.
Thank you for the replies.
I really hope I’ll receive all the transfer unit credit.
DAR right now says:
MINIMUM 180 UNITS / MINIMUM 2.0 GPA FOR A UCLA DEGREE
Earned: 113.0 UNITS
8.0 UNITS ATTEMPTED
In-Progress: 17.0 UNITS
NEEDS: 50.0 UNITS
COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFER UNITS
(University Community College Transfer Limit:105 Units)
60.0 UNITS
COMMUNITY COLLEGE UNITS EXCEEDING ALLOWABLE MAXIMUM
(NOTE: Community college units in excess of 105 units
do not earn unit credit but do receive course credit
and may be used to satisfy other requirements.)
(18.0 UNITS)
NON-COMMUNITY COLLEGE, NON-AP / IB TRANSFER UNITS
45.0 UNITS
The 8 units attempted are the 8 units I took my first fall quarter. (I was approved for part-time student in the fall quarter because of family responsibilities through the reduced fee program.)
If I was supposed to receive all transfer unit credit, the “earned: 113.0 units” should be “earned: 131.0 units” because I completed 123 transfer units. Currently, 113 units = 105 capped transfer units + 8 units.
The 17 in-progress units are what I’m registered to take this winter quarter.
In the next section, you see the numbers 60, 18, 45. Adding them up equals 123 units.
The non-community college, non-AP/IB transfer units are the 45 units I completed at USC.
I petitioned some upper division classes to substitute for some of my major requirements which worked out well, but it didn’t make me receive the unit credit beyond the 105 cap. If that’s not the one you meant, could the petition you’re talking about help my situation?
It’s possible to petition the remaining upper division courses for upper division credit. There are two kinds of petitions – one is by a department and the other is by the college. This is different from petitioning with Admissions when you first transfer over. Good luck!
Thanks. I think I know which petition you’re talking about, found it in the UCLA College Academic Counseling website.
