Current UCSD Transfer

Hello all!
I am currently in my first year as a transfer to UCSD and have gone through the TAG/IGETC and application/enrolling for classes/housing contract process and will answer questions that anybody may have in regards to this school (i.e. colleges, housing, access to the gym, food, etc). I know last year I was on this site worried and having people answer questions about UCSD helped me through the process.

:)

What were your stats/ major? :)

Haha, I am freaking out about my crappy GPA, and I would really like to get into UCSD. Could you and any1 who wants to chance me?

I’m an Econ major and my GPA after Fall semester should be 3.51ish overall with IGETC complete and major prereqs completed except CALC-3, which I plan to take during Spring. No TAG.
Also, just 50+ hours of volunteer work from High school, but no ECs and an average Personal Statement. =[

hi, my question is: can u retake a course you completed in CC at UCSD?
for example, I had Java in my CC and got A, but I like to see how it is taught at UCSD that’s why I like to take it there(they have labs etc etc…)

@Mik194- I’m a Lit major and my GPA was 3.7. Not the most competitive major at UCSD but I know people in those competitive majors that had worse GPA and no TAG.

@refreshe18- I didn’t have any volunteer work during my two years at CC (mostly because I worked a lot) and only some volunteer experience during high school. The most common advice that I was told while applying (which I’m sure you are hearing a lot) is to try to do as much prereqs as you can or complete as many courses that are on ASSIST as well.

@bolandgoo- I’m not sure if it would work the same way, but I was not able to retake a class that I had already passed in my CC (I wanted to take the same level Spanish class again before going to the next level because there was a gap). Assuming you could, I personally don’t think it would be beneficial because then you’d be paying however many times more for a class you already passed. Also, assuming that an individual is getting grants or financial aid directly from UCSD (such as the Blue & Gold plan)…that only lasts for your first four years (or first two as a CC transfer) so if you are taking classes that you have already passed or don’t need then you’re increasing the chance that the classes that you do need to graduate will push you to be here in your third year or more (that’s if you’re planning on graduating in two years).

How many credits did you have completed during the fall that you applied? Because I don’t even have 30 yet, but with this semester & Spring semester, I will have the required 60, but I’m worried that this will hurt my chances.

Hey, I’m hoping to apply and transfer next year, but I am a little confused about TAG. I am currently in my first semester of cc and am completing 12 units of UC transferable classes. I also passed 2 AP tests in high school. It says from the tag website that you need 30 units by the time you apply. So does that mean my AP tests I passed count as 3 units each? (I passed US History and US Government). Or do I need to take 18 more units by next fall

ItsSoSunny: UCSD has cancelled their TAG program effective Fall 2014 they have chosen no longer to participate in TAG.

I have about a 3.45 gpa and want to be a human development major, which would be pre-human development major since i cant be declared that major until i complete one of the courses at UCSD. Do you know anything about that major? My gps is pretty low since I took science courses and took a course at UCI extension since I was previously a bio major.

@Matt4200 yea it’s a bummer  but other UC schools still have TAG, so does my AP tests count as 3 units each?

@bolandgoo
I was able to enroll in a class that I received credit for previously in community college, so it’s possible. I didn’t end up taking it, but it let me enroll with a warning on WebReg (online registration website) that I had taken it before and I might not receive academic credit. Also, just to correct some erroneous information, you pay a flat rate tuition at all the UC’s so you don’t necessarily pay more money for repeating classes. Here it costs the same to enroll in 12 units as it does in 20 units. It isn’t like CC where you pay per the amount of units you’re taking. That being said, it is sound advice not to repeat too many classes as obviously it may contribute to making you stay longer and make your given work load in any quarter more difficult.

@ dilapidatedmind: wow that’s interesting!!! so it’s not like it’s $40 per unit and if I get 10 units I’m paying 40*10=400…we just pay 10000 and take as many as we want…
I didn’t get that part right Mistybeach, do u mean we can only apply for financial aid till 2 years after we transfer?! (I’m in my third year at CC(working/studying)) and after that 2 years they’ll stop helping you out?
