Current UM students

What are your grades looking like this for this term? For freshman, were you surprised by the difficulty (or lack thereof) of UM academics?

as a new transfer student, i've been overwhelmed at first.
it was hard adjusting and i didn't do so well on mid-terms. i'll definitely do a lot better on finals though since i know what i have to do and how to really study and prepare.

i transferred from my state university, and i had a 3.85 from just studying the night before exams and never doing hw. so yeah, it's quite different here.

Math classes: Difficult to judge. I know an A in one for sure. Guessing A- and B+ in the other two, depending on finals/curve.
Physics: A
American Culture/History: A

Um...

Physics... C? D? Hopefully that goes better.
Engin 101 ... C is a guess, haven't gotten anything back yet.
Math 295 ... probably a C after the final.

GPA: 2.0? 1.7?

anthropolgy: a+
compsci: c to a, somewhere in there, probably towards bottom
math 295: who knows.......d->a, in the range
psych: a

my schedule is easy, dont take it too seriously....
anthro is fun, being racist helps

Eng110-A
eng101-D
Math115-B+
Chem130-B-
Chem125-B

i have an easy engin schedule, and it is still a ton of work. programming is killing me, i have to drop the class. exams suck. i have had at least one a week for a while. they count so much towards your grade. it is harder than i though. i envy people that take B.S. majors at western or central. I saw a saying once that said, "U of M is like unprotected sex. It is great once you're in, but once you come you're fuc ked."

"You're glad you got in, but sorry you came"

hahahahaha i totally agree chummer with your last quote.

It's been totally different than I thought it'd be in a very good way... My professors seem to be less concerned with grading very harshly and more concerned that we are actually learning something and enjoying the process. That being said, it's not like they just hand grades out. If you don't do the work, you won't get the grade. But, with good effort, doing well hasn't been a problem for me. That being said, I am taking a pretty easy schedule despite 3/4 of my classes being honors.

Projections:
SOC 195: A
HISTORY 302: haven't received a single grade yet, but I'm hoping for an A
GTBOOKS 191: A/A-
SPANISH 231: A
overall anticipating high 3.? or 4.0

great books? so you're an honors student -_-
of course it's easy for you, hehe :]

Math 295: some kind of A or B despite...yeah...ahem...
Polsci 391: B+ to A
Polsci 306: B+ to A
Geosci 107: A+
Slavic 490: some kind of A
Eng 483: no idea yet

These are really rough estimates...not enough grades yet to judge.

dangggggg christine! you're amazing!

I hate my geosci class. I thought it would be interesting because it was a seminar.

christine, you're taking slavic 490?! haha.
that class seems like a total waste to me and i have no idea what to write my reflection on -_-

How hard is everyone working for their grades? How many hours per day?

How challenging are the math classes? Why does 295 seem so tough this year?

math 175: b-?
great books: a-
poli sci 140: a
musicology: a-

I probably average about 2-3 hours of homework a day. It's not consistent because it comes in 1-5 hour spurts when I'm cranking out a problem set (at least in the harder math/science classes). I also have to plan when I get school stuff done around work (12ish hours a week) and hockey games.

295 is a lot tougher than it was last year, which is not necessarily saying much. How the class goes depends on a lot on the teacher. If I ever get a hold of some of their homeworks, I can compare it to what I did two years ago. I think it's back on track to where it should be. If the Honors sequence is done right, you're essentially done with undergraduate math and ready to start the alpha grad classes after the 4 semesters.

i've talked to a lot of students and asked about their study habits. for most students, it seemed to be around 4 hours a day on weekdays, less on weekends unless if they have an upcoming exam.

Math 185 A-? A?
Chem 130 A
Chem 125 A
English some kind of B
UC105 A

Hoping for a mid-high 3

fear 295.

that is all.
