Current UMD Freshman/Smith parent to answer any questions

Congrats to all new admits. Happy to try to answer any questions you may have.

Hey I applied as Business (undecided). I got accepted, It says my advising school is Smith School of Business. I was wondering, now that I am in the business school can I get into any major I want in the business school. Or do I have to reapply for a certain major say finances.

Congratulations, you will be able to major in any of the disciplines within the Business School. Your first 2 years will be “general business” classes: Freshman Fellows, Stats, Econ, Accounting etc. Your Upper Level Major specific Courses will not start until 2nd semester Soph or Jr Year. Many students change majors within the Business School.
Good Luck.

Thank you very much. That was one of my big concerns, when I realized I did not choose an exact major in Smith. I appreciate the help again!

Do you think it is more difficult for new freshman entering in the Spring? Anything from socially, to academically. I ask because I was accepted for the Spring semester and waitlisted for the Fall. I’m doing everything i can to get in for the Fall, but if i don’t, I’ll probably study Abroad in the Fall and obviously come to main campus for the spring.

^^^I just read that this was a parent. I assume you probably don’t have much insight on this then. It’s my bad for not reading the entire title. lol

Hello! I got accepted into UMD Scholars and the Smith School of Business with my major being “Business: Undecided” and I’m so confused right now. I have no idea what either of these are. Care to enlighten me with some basic things I need to know? haha

Congrats Julieeee, You have been admitted to the Smith School of Business as a direct admit. You must have requested the business school on your application. In addition, the Scholars program are living/learning programs where you live with others with similar interests/school programs. The Scholars programs are living in “nicer dorms” (air conditioning), and you may also be entitled to some scholarship money. You will need to room or request to room with another from your Scholars program. Otherwise your roommate request may not be honored. Congrats on being accepted to both of these very prestigious programs. You should be very proud.

Not sure if you have experience with this, but nonetheless, I have a question. I applied under Philosophy. I have been accepted to the College of Humanities and Scholars. Problem is, I am still completely undecided on my major and I have a feeling it will change several times. Is it easy to transfer to other schools? Such as Smith or the College of Engineering? Thanks.

Thanks for the info! I also have a few other questions…

1) Do I have to dorm in the “Scholar’s dorms”?
2) Are there certain classes I need to take for being in the Scholars/Smith program?
3) Do I have to dorm with a fellow Scholar?

Can you sign up for housing before committing to attend? And is there any benefit to signing up early (i.e., are there priority numbers)?

Hey maxsdad, I was admitted for my LEP, Gov and Politics, and also got into the Civicus Living and Learning Program. Do you know anything about Civicus?

Nihility, Some Majors/Programs are LEP (Limited Enrollment Programs) and this includes Engineering and Smith Business. If interested, You will need to apply after your Soph year to be accepted to these specific programs. As I understand, for these LEP programs, a min GPA and an application process is required to be accepted. Changing your Major to anything that is not an LEP program is no problem at all.

Julieee, As I understand, (you may want to confirm with housing or the scholars program) but YES to questions 1 and 3. As to question 2, you will be taking your “Business/Smith” Classes with other Smith Students (Freshman Fellows and Business Stat, etc) and most likely your non-business classes with your fellow scholars students from your Living/Learning community.
Hope that helps!!!

JenPam, If I remember correctly, housing can be signed up for after you send in your deposit and there is a deadline for housing. I recommend signing up as early as possible. My son sent his housing info request the night before the deadline and was put in a double. Some of his friends who send in earlier were put in forced triples (yes there are many). The housing department does not honor dorm requests at all and will not honor roommate requests if you are in different scholar/living learning communities.

herewego, The Civicus program [CIVICUS Living and Learning Program](http://www.civicus.umd.edu/home.htm) is a Living/Learning community with a focus on Community Service. You will be housed with other students with similar interests but may have all different academic interests. I personally do not know anyone in this program but I am sure others can give you better insight.

Maxsdad,

Do you know if students accepted to the Smith Business School all dorm together?

Ravensfan: No. Smith Students do not dorm together unless they request each other or it happens randomly.

Thanks for your help!

maxsdad: my son got in to Scholars and was accepted to the business school. He chose for his living and learning program the “Business, Society and the Economy” program. We heard during a tour that if you are in this living and learning program, you can’t also be a Freshman Fellow. He was thinking if he’d known that, he’d have chosen another topic as his preverence. He’s considering not being a Scholar in order to do Freshman Fellow. I think it’s better he stay in scholars. What is your thoughts on this?
