Current Vandy Freshman

It’s different for each fraternity. Vanderbilt quotes 800-1400. Depends on how socially active they are and such. A fraternity like Phi Psi is probably on the cheaper end while SAE is probably the most expensive. There’s also a new fraternity on campus, DTD, they don’t have a house and their dues are probably next to nothing (far less than 800)

@Pancaked thx
Also, I suck at writing essays. Can you recommend any books that can help me in my First Year Writing Seminar? Maybe sth that teachers recommended in class?

Can’t help ya there, sorry, engineering major, didn’t even have to take a writing seminar. I’m pretty sure the point of writing seminars are just to improve your writing-- they involve a ton of instructor feedback, opportunities for re-writes, etc.

$800-1400 a year for what? That’s a pretty hefty sum… what does it go towards since the fraternities are non-residential at Vandy? Not sure how I will explain that one to my parents.

Goes to a lot of things. Nationals dues, house rental, Risk management insurance, hosting parties/tailgates and other social events, hosting rush events, brotherhood events, and so on. Only six people live in fraternity houses, but you still have to pay to rent/use the house.

@Pancaked thanks a lot! that really helps.

Is it difficult to get into the Peabody School of Education?

Its difficult to get into Vanderbilt. Look up the admission stats for Vandy as a whole. The admission stats for Peabody specifically will be nearly the same.

My son received an email that his meal plan has been selected and that if he would like to add anything he can do so before 7/15 to get a discounted rate. Is it necessary to add to the first year meal plan or did you students feel it was enough? Also he could not add his Vanderbilt email to his iPhone. Is he doing something wrong or can it not be added to the phone? Thanks for all your help!

@momoftheboys- he is fine with the first year meal plan. If he is having problem with email to iphone, he can contact vandy IT and they can walk him through to get it up and running. It can be added to his iphone.

agree//…vandy it more than happy to help, so don’t hesitate to call and email to get your phone and email synched with vanderbilt gmail

The first year meal plan is SO MUCH FOOD… definitely do not add.

Ha ha my son ran out of the meal money by mid September! I had to tell him to make better use of the meal periods and if he wanted more meal money to use his own money.

Does anyone have insight into the closets at the Commons? My understanding is they do not have doors, and that you use some kind of shower curtain or other curtain as a “door” to the closet? Do the closets have shelves? Or is this an opportunity to put a hanging storage thing on the clothes rod? Does anyone know what the kids routinely do?

Yes they have no doors. You could use a curtain but it’s not really necessary. I guess girls tended to use curtains. Closets have two clothes rods and a few shelf/basket things as I recall. That along with the drawers should be enough space for most guys.

I sewed matching curtains for D and her roommate, and they hung them on shower rods. It worked well to hide the mess! :)

Hiding the mess what was I was thinking! Daughter will be up at 5am to swim every morning, closet tends to be a wreck when trying to find clothes at that hour. Guess I’ll search out a curtain solution. If Daughter relies upon me to sew something, her closet will be out of luck. (No sewing skills past putting on a button.)

I recall that I got my daughter a single curtain panel (on sale at BB&B) and hung it on a tension type shower curtain rod. I can’t sew either! I thought it looked nicer than her roommate’s closet which didn’t have anything but I’m not sure the girls even noticed  For what it’s worth the shelves and hanging rod in the closet are those white wire kinds, not wooden. My daughter’s double was one of the smaller ones on the Commons but the closet was a fairly decent size. We later got one of those round shoe holder things (at the Container Store) which has helped with closet organization.

Thanks so much everyone for the information! We greatly appreciate it. Daughter is so excited to be a Commodore in the fall.
