Current Villanova Senior - Ask Me Anything

@julia1611 @novanation_15 The grant will only change if there is a significant change in your family’s finances. This is common. Otherwise, you can expect the package to be the same. After all, that money is already committed to you.

@julia1611 So every year you reapply for financial aid and receive a new package. The reason for this is financial situations are always changing and it is important for the school to stay updated on the situation of each family. However, the two main situations that would cause a decrease in the VU grant would be an older sibling graduating from college, or a large pay increase. Barring significant change to the family’s financial situation, you should expect to see approximately the same package each year.

Also keep in mind that as your stafford loan eligibility increases each year, that is unfortunately sometimes taken out of your VU grant, and so some of the money changes from a grant to a loan.

@zziwhcs180 I just wanted to add that we have not seen this. S1 will be a junior net year. Grant has remained the same, despite Stafford increase of $1K. Costs, of course, keep increasing also.

How much fun are you guys having right now?

What does a typical day at Villanova look like? Is there flexibility in choosing what times your classes are?

@IvyHopeful98 No words could describe what is currently happening in this place.

This leads me to want to share with you prospectives what I believe is truly special about Villanova. In my opinion, you don’t just choose a school for the education and job opportunities. You are choosing a place that gives you an identity, not only for 4 years, but for the rest of your life. I’m going to be honest, basketball was the reason I chose this school over Northeastern, BU and Southern California. There is something special about the relationship between basketball and academics at this school. The way our program works makes watching games so much more special than a typical powerhouse like UNC or Kansas. It’s the one uniting factor that brings together ALL students and I think this school has more pride than most in the country. No, I am not a big fan of the administration but there is this “essence” on campus that makes me really enjoy being here, and that starts with basketball. I was with them during the lows of the last two seasons so I could be with them during the highs of this season. I personally knew Hart and Jenkins, who lived on my floor freshman year, and it was crazy to see them tear it up on the national stage.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but keep this in mind when you are selecting the school that gives you an identity. Come down to accepted students weekend and you will see what I mean. And no, I am NOT a recruiter for the school, I am just an average student

@zziwhcs180 thank you for all your helpful responses. I can only imagine what it is like to be on campus right now. Quick question, your two friends who transferred from CLAS into VSB… How easy was it? Did they have really great grades? From talking to admissions they seem to say it is extremely difficult to transfer. You would be competing with internal and external transfers. So, I wanted to get your impression to see if it is that impossible.

@pkchamp89 I don’t know how good their grades/credentials were when they got accepted so I can’t really speak on that. However their policy is that transfer admissions is just as difficult as getting into the business school as a freshman. I am sure a solid freshman year could overturn a decision if you initially got denied, though. My friends are by no means geniuses so it’s certainly not impossible.

@traquepo Typical day at nova is usually classes in the morning starting at 8:30 to 10:30 AM depending on the semester. Then you usually have lunch and possibly an afternoon class around 1. I also had a work study job and a few extracirriculars, so that took time out of my schedule as well. However, I’m sure your typical day varies greatly depending on your major/what you’re involved in.

Flexibility depends on your major. A&S is probably the most flexible as there are usually many different time slots and sections for those classes. Engineering is a much more rigid schedule as there are usually only 1 or 2 selections for your specific field and they are infamous for starting much earlier in the morning than other majors. Also there is very little room for electives in engineering. Can’t speak for business or nursing but they are probably somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

@zziwhcs180 thanks for the information. Its good to know that there is still am opportunity to make the transfer.

During a Villanova tour, our guide mentioned some sort of a service living/commitment related to the Alumni Hall. What exactly is this, and what year do you need to be in order to join (I believe he said sophomore year, but I can’t remember). Thanks

@cle2020 Yes, the service living community is available as an option during your sophomore year. I believe you live in the same hall as other service-oriented students in Alumni, and basically go on organized service events/trips throughout the year.

@mrinformed Nope haha but nice try

@zziwhcs180 I am an entering freshman and took Spanish in high school but decided to take Italian at VU to satisfy the 2 core requirements for language in CLAS. I just found out I have to take 4 semesters of Italian because I have to take it through the Intermediate level. So now I have to decide if I stay in Italian or switch to Irish or a Critical language (Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Greek or Arabic) which I’d only have to take for two semesters. Those languages seem like they’d be tough to learn tho. It’s too late for me to take a Spanish placement test because all the Spanish classes are full. Do you have any advice about which language would be the best to take? Or which ones to be sure to avoid? I think it all depends on the department. My sister took 2 semesters of Chinese which was pretty easy at her school and she loved it but I know someone else who took Chinese at a different school and it was super hard. I just want to take the easiest possible language for two semesters that will be interesting and satisfies my requirements.
