Right now I am currently failing all of my second semester classes at UMASS. For the first semester I did fairly well getting a 30 with 17 credits and a 3.5 within my engineering major classes. This semester however I dropped the ball. I took 19 credits with 3 labs on a weekly basis and that combined with stress from home stuff I just lost a handle on my grades, but no excuses. My question is what do I do next?

My finances are like so- I have the presidents out of state scholarship which brings the cost of college down to in state tuition. I also have my dad's Benefits from the GI bill transferred to me and all of this means I can afford college. But as of now all of that is gone and I've got no savings. So my question is how do I move forward? I am currently looking for a job but other than that I don't know what to do. So.... help?

Talk to your advisor and the financial aid office ASAP. See if you can take a leave of absence or if there’s a way to preserve your scholarship and GI benefits. If you can’t, you may have to withdraw. If you have to withdraw, your best option may be to move home and go to community collge to get your grades up. 19 credits in engineering is a lot under the best of circumstances.

Truth is, you may not be in the right school or the right program (Engineering at Big state schools doesn’t get easier as you advance, and, in truth, they anticipate a fairly healthy rate of attrition as part of the weeding out process–they might not bend over backwards to help you much…it’s not cool, but it is how it goes).

Community Colleges have done nothing over the last 10 years but get better and focus more and more on serving people in your exact circumstance. I’d consider a reboot, but only you know what you really want to do and what you are capable of.
