Currently studying in Hong Kong

Hi guys,

I'm an international applicant from Ukraine living in Hong Kong (go figure) right now so maybe this will be harder to chance than most everyone else here but anyway.

My GPA is not good partly because I was forced to take Mandarin in grades 9 and 10 and because I suck at science but was once again forced by my principal to take honors science courses. So here goes:

Grades 9-11 Cumulative GPA (unweighted, my school does not even weigh): 3.0 (no more, no less) but have been improving

My school does not rank but we have 64 students in senior year and I'm definitely in the top 20%.

I've been taking challenging courses and doing quite well at them:

Junior Year:

AP Calculus BC: 4 on the exam, 87% for the class
AP World History: 5 on the exam, 94% for the class
Pre-AP English Literature: 90%
PE: 90% (not like anyone cares)
Honors Physics: 72% (yes, I know, I hate science)
Computer Programming: 92%

Senior Year (school hasn't given out grades yet, but below are my expected):

AP Statistics: 85%
AP English Literature: ~85-90%
Honors Global Studies: >95%
Journalism: >90%
PE: >90%
Art: >80%

Yeah not the best of grades but my school doesn't really have the best class choices and since I'm a history guy I would love to be doing classes like AP US History and Government and so on instead of Art and PE but is really all that's left to me.

Now the SATs:

First sitting: 1940 - CR: 600 - Math: 630 - Writing: 710 (essay 9)
Second sitting (worse): 1920 - CR: 610 - Math: 610 - Writing 700 (essay 9)

Once again, not very good SAT scores. I'm taking SAT II Math II and WH this Saturday.

I also think of myself as a pretty good writer although my SAT essay in no way shows that. I wrote a pretty good application essay though.

My ECs have been all of the following:

One of six other students from my senior year chosen to represent the school in a huge "global leaders" conference in Beijing next year
Debate Club and Team (grades 9-12)
Student Council (grade 9 and 11)
Human Rights Club (grade 12)
Soccer Team (grades 10-12)
IT Club (grades 10-11)

Community Service:

about 80 - 100 hours of community service over HS career

Leadership:

Helped in orphanage in Thailand this year
Contributed to school cultural fair every year of HS
Student Council Administration Rep (changed school uniform through proposal)

Work Experience:

Work at jewelry company for 3 hours/week for 1.5 years (still there)
Tutor math to grade 5 student 1-2 hours/week for 1.5 years (kid is the son of the owners of the jewelry company)

So here are the universities I applied to already, I applied to Business/Finance/Economics to all:

Rutgers (New Brunswick and NJ campus)
U of Maryland College Park
U of Florida
Florida State (applied for International Relations here)
U of Minnesota - Twin Cities

and I was accepted to Purdue 3 weeks ago for the Economics program so at least I have one. :)

I'm also applying to a few Hong Kong universities if anyone else here is from Hong Kong.

Thanks guys!

Illya

Bump 123456789

bump 10 characters

Bumpbumpbump

You'll probably be accepted to all of them except maybe Florida. By the way, I was accepted into Rutgers and I was planing to be a Finance major, however, at Rutgers you have to go there for two years and than be accepted into their business school, but its pretty difficult to get into apparently.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I realize now that Florida is pretty hard to get into with their average GPA being like 3.7. But is U of Maryland really possible?

And also Purdue is the second best business school of all of the universities I applied to (after Maryland) so I don't really care that much about the others.

I'm actually planning to go to college here in Hong Kong but want to use acceptance letters from US unis to better my chances here.

good chances everywhere. I think that admision officers will look more on your ranking rather than on your gpa since you are international and he system may be different of the difficulty of the course

Purdue may have the best business school out of those, but recruiters are regional. Expect to work in Indiana if you go there.
