Hey everyone, so I’m back with another question about Bowdoin.

I am deciding between Amherst and Bowdoin. I really like the idea of the open curriculum of Amherst, but I feel like I might get a more well-rounded education if I have the broad class requirements at Bowdoin. However, I also have to take into consideration my intention of going to med school and thus following a pre-med course. How easy will it be to complete my requirements for pre-med, complete requirements for my major, complete my Bowdoin requirements, and still have the flexibility to take some other classes that interest me?

Let me just say first off that you’re not going to have any trouble getting into med school, which ever school you choose. Provided you maintain good grades, both schools have programs that will give you every advantage when applying (79% of Amherst med school applicants and 86% of Bowdoin med school applicants are accepted on their first try-- at a lot of schools most kids who apply to med school don’t even get in anywhere).

Next, an undergraduate education is meant to be well rounded. Wait till grad school to totally submerge yourself in one subject.

Most people easily finish their Bowdoin requirements by the end of their sophomore year, so those aren’t going to be too much of a hassle over. You only need to take 9-10 semester classes to completed a major-- and if you wanted to you could take up to 5 classes in a semester. I don’t think completing the requirements for a major is going to be too tight time wise, even if that major is medicine related. You’re still going to have room for taking many other classes (many kids double major and even more do a minor or concentration along with their regular major).

i know tons of pre-med guys who major in visual arts or music. i never even look at the requirements since all the classes i choose will eventually fulfill them anyways
