Curtains for dorm room

How necessary are curtains? Do the dorm windows have blinds? My S will be in one of the new dorms, so I looked up the floor plan but didn't see the window dimensions. Where would I get that info.?

My S was in EW, and the windows all had blinds of some kind -- I don't remember exactly. But I know we did not purchase any window coverings.

I'm pretty sure curtains won't be necessary, though I've never seen the new dorms - all the other dorms I've seen or stayed in (Mass Row, EW, Choates) - have had curtains or blinds.

All of the dorms I've been in have had these heavy plastic curtain/blind things. They roll up onto a rod hung at the top and you just pull them down. I like them because they block out all the light when they are down. However, some people like to hang their own curtains for decoration.

Since most rooms have blinds shades, I would refrain from putting up curtains or atleast carefully read the indiidual room policies (as ORL will not hestiate to fine you especially residents in the new dorms) where it states:

Decorations.

Residents are encouraged to decorate their assigned rooms in order to make their residential community feel like home. Residents are expected to decorate with adherence to the following:

A. No permanent alterations may be made to the residence hall rooms.

B. Students are permitted to hang items with map tacks and thumb tacks.

C. Students are not permitted to hang items with nails, screws, contact
paper, double-sided tape, wall gum, stickers. Residents may not use
other devices that leave large holes and/or other adhesive material.

D. Privately-owned Greek and Society Houses establish their own policies
regarding decorations.
